For some reason I always feel so betrayed when the cut on "thanks for watching" comes slightly sooner than I expected. Like I was expecting it to cut at "watch-" instead of barely cutting the end of "thanks"

Playing Calico manages to feel exactly like I have simultaneously woven a perfect quilt, solved a sudoku, and convinced my cat to cuddle with me on demand. I love that game and it's layers and layers of patterns
I played cascadia and enjoyed it. For many reasons. It is nice to build a little ecosystem and build a region that reminds me of my new home that I would love to fly over. I get how it might not be to everyone’s tastes but at the game store when I’m a little overwhelmed it’s very nice to play with my friends
I do kinda feel that, though the only solo-pattern-maker I end up enjoying is Azul. Something about Competetive Nim is good to my brain like that one Mario Party 2 minigame with the bees they brought back for the switch version for some reason.
Does Scythe go into that same solitaire pattern builder niche for you? I remember not liking Terraforming Mars because it fell into that archetype but Scythe felt like a weird edge case where it simultaneously was and wasn't

I don't quite understand why every time i hear about either calico or cascadia i hear about the other one. I don't know anyone who owns one but not the other irl. wahts up with that is what im thinking about now

Maybe its how i play it but I defo don't see arboretum as at all solo pattern building, given if you score at all is based on your opponents hand, and visa versa .
Well, for one, it's not quite solitary. You can draw cards from discard piles, and you only score a tree colour if you're holding the biggest card of that colour at the table in your hand. It enables incredibly hostile drafting (due to discards being available) and a lot of bluffing and double-guessing based on not yet revealed cards. Then there's also another reason for hostile drafting, a possibility for a double payout if you've built an entire daisy chain out of the same tree colour, which you shouldn't be able to do because someone should hate draft those trees and you can't play ALL of those cards cause you need one for scoring. In other words, it's anything but peaceful or solitary if you play it right.
yeah, this is it. the aggressive drafting and card counting, the offensive & defensive playing, all on top of a really nice core puzzle that would have been fun even without the subversive adversarial elements

God's Love Dinosaurs is the top of "put tile down and put a thing on the tile" board game. There's a quite consequential drafting mechanic that introduces player interaction (more than might initially be apparent) You have to populate your tiles with animals that eat each other (so they will disappear as well as be placed), and the pace of when animals must feed is set by how the players choose to draft
I call these kinds of games group solitaire and I really don't enjoy them. There are a few I can tolerate but of there's no interactions with other players then why did we get together to play?
