Well it’s pretty late (or early depending on how you look at it) here! After missing the Persona 5 boat, hopefully this will be of use for your performance needs! Mark
@@neavirenth Didn't say it was. But he talked about the loading screen animations taking away from the hassle of load times. Having fun little Easter eggs also help and is something they didn't have to do at all
Honestly the fact the confidants can get see in the world outside of there hang outs Like tae when you first get to le blanc or kawekami jogging past you as you head into school
I'm incredibly jealous of anyone that gets to play persona 5 for the first time on switch. Such a fantastic game that's perfect for the switch. If you haven't played it before your in for a treat!
I love your attitude, I love it when other people get to experience these great works of art. I've never understood why some people don't want other people to play the games they themselves have loved.
One of my favorite games of all time. Artwork, music, story, and gameplay are all top notch and mesh very well together. Really glad the port holds up to the expected quality. Would highly recommend committing to a full playthrough if you have the time and attention span (the life sim elements can be too slow for some people). Definitely a game to be savored.
Is saying that it's "to be savored" a diplomatic way of saying overlong? That's how I felt when completing the PS3 Vanilla version, which had definitely overstayed it's welcome as it had long started to drag. I'm not sure how streamlined Royal makes it though.
@@djhabibi04 My intention with "to be savored" is to say that there is great depth in story if you allow yourself to ponder its implications complimented by a gameplay system that allows you to get to know the characters. If you are the type of gamer who wants to sit down and get a few headshots, maybe stick to overwatch. I don't believe there is a game that everyone will enjoy.
@@SecretGizmo1902 Yeah I know man, I was just messing with you, sorry. Given that I actually completed the game (as well as Persona 3 and 4) should tell you I'm not exactly an Overwatch guy. But even by JRPG standards, I still feel this game pushed it length-wise but I know I'm in the minority here!
Such a helpful video, thank you! And I'm so glad you're not rushing this just for a review and are going to enjoy it, these are huge games and I think they offer something a little different to a lot of what is out there, so good for you! 🤓
Fantastic technical review switch up! In regards to the shadow issues you're referring to I don't recall encountering any shadow casting issues on the PS4 but as you stated the ones here seem very minor. I think you're absolutely spot on about the overlays considering they appear far sharper on the Switch screen then the background assets do but I don't believe it's a drastic drop in comparison to say... the base PS4 version of the game. The performance looks every bit as consistent as the original game did and the loading times seem perfect. If I were to point out any slight potential compromises, it's hard to tell but there maybe some slight audio compression it's very hard for me to tell without listening to them side by side but even then this soundtrack is so fire I really don't mind.
Just a note on the pedestrian load in showed in the video. That was also present in the game on PS4. I don't believe it is load in and is just a feature of the game and how the pedestrians move etc
Picked this up with an early Black Friday price of 30 USD, the VERY last copy in the store (display unit) - and it was even the steelbook edition! for that price, it’s a steal! About 10 hours in and it definitely seems like a game I’ll put 200+ hours into. Can’t wait :)
Ironically this and Bayonetta 3 appear to be the perfect Halloween games for this year! I already have the aforementioned digitally on PS4 but I dunno it just feels more at home on Switch.. I may be biased because I have great memories playing many a night with P4g on Vita
Thank you. I was curious how Persona 5 Royal would run on switch. I played the original Persona 5 on PS3 i think. Then Royal on PS4. So happy the game is out on xbox and switch now. The more people experiencing this fantastic jrpg series, the better. :)
I played vanilla P5 on PS4 Pro. I own the Steelbook edition of P5Royal for PS4 as well (didn´t play it though). And I pre ordered the Steelbook editions of P5Royal for Switch as well as for PS5 now (which is the version I will play during the holiday season). :)
No matter how many times, for how long or on which platform I cannot stress just how good the post battle scene and music is, I never get tired of hearing it! Especially that funky bassline.
This is my first Persona game. I had the decision of either buying it on Steam or on the Switch. I must say that I am very glad that I bought it on the Switch. It is such an incredible game and perfect to take on the go.
I hated the resolution on handheld but I warmed up after an hour. This has been my all time favorite game for so many years and its impossible to top, and I was never happier when it got announced for Switch. I recommend this game 11/10 to anyone here
Did you manage to keep playing it? I really want to play this game handheld but when I bought it I couldn't believe how terrible it looks. Like genuinely screw up my eyes and give me a headache terrible. I tried but I don't think I can adjust to it
I remember being in Japan before Persona 5 (non royal) came out. Adverts were everywhere for it. I’ve bought Persona 5 three times now, the original release, Royal edition on PS4 and now on Switch. I’ve never actually gotten round to finishing it and put about 30 hours on the PS4 version of Royal. But finally with it coming to Switch I can finish it. Such a great game.
Man, your title really had me thinking “Oh no, they screwed up!” Thank god they did a great job. I played Persona 4 on Vita and was blown away. I hope 5 does the same on the Switch!
I'm literally playing this right as this was posted on PS5, 90 hours into Royal, its a fantastic update to the original, i just didn't like one of the updated bosses in the game but i love the new additions and the quality of life improvements in this version
@@James-gj8rn I see, I have a bad habit of over leveling in games. (I may have been at least LV60 at the time) so I didn't have any big issues, but yeah the updated boss fight increased his difficulty. I never beat OG P5, Okumura was actually the last boss I beat before I dropped it.
I stopped playing it on PS4 because i always tought this game is perfect for the switch or at least some kind of handheld console (i grew up with nintendo handheld consoles and playing RPGs) so i waited until i got my hands on the switch oled version to play it, was still curious about the performance but your video cleared all those doubts greatly, now is the time to order it :D
I’ve tried a couple persona games and want to love them but I just don’t like the dating sim/relationship building parts which usually seem to be a big chunk. Great review!
I think they handled it so much better in 5 since you can do so much more outside of social sim like games and stuff and the sim actually giving you dungeon abilities n stuff. I recommend the smt series if you mostly like dungeons and story though (mostly smt4)
If you want a persona game without the sim/relationship building stuff, you can play Shin Megami Tensei, which are the main games. Basically Persona without the stuff you don't like.
an overclocked switch was running this game at around 60-50 fps so I'm not suprised there aren't any drops also the assets streaming with the people disappearing was in the original release its a stylistic choice from Atlus.
I'm playing Persona 5 on my switch for the first time and for what it's worth I totally agree with this review. Atlus did a VERY good job bringing it to the Switch, and I was entirely satisfied with my purchase.
Will definitely be picking up Carl Jung 5 Royal, even though I finished it almost a year ago on PS4. My favourite video game franchise. I do wish Atlus would port Persona 1 and 2 though. I've never played those and I really want to.
You might have just sold me on the switch version instead of the steam deck version. Love the steam dexk but the switch being smaller and lighter makes it something I prefer playing long jrpg type games on so long as the performance doesn't take too big of a hit.
i was playing on xbox series s. i own it via ps4. i can confirm, Characters, NPCs and enemies are higher rez in both versions than items in the background. Edit: The fandom wiki has been updated with changes between, p5, p5 royal and ps5 royal 2022 edition.
Just want to point out that an overclocked switch ran this game at 60fps and it was almost locked the entire time, worst I saw was dropping to 58-59, so it being solidly locked at 30fps is not a surprise.
The overlays being locked at native is the key thing. Its what makes xenoblade 3 look so good, as opposed to nms which looks awful to me due to blurry text and interface.
I feel a bit misled by all of the reviewers who recommended this port. I just finished p4g and am almost done with p3p. I flunked out of P5R a few years ago but am ready to play it, so I bought the Switch version for handheld. It's genuinely unbearable to look at. Please, buy the game elsewhere.
I've got my copy coming this week! Most of my friends played it on the PS4 and many of theme speak very highly of it. This won't be my first Persona, but I hope it's the first I stick with. I played maybe half a dozen hours of P4 Golden on the Vita and it failed to rope me in. Don't really remember why (it's been that long). Here's hoping though!
I would love to see a review of the joycons you are using on your console at the 5:00 minute mark, I've gotten tons of ads for the Nyxi joycon and seen multiple equal joycons in AliExpress, plus the Binbok, but I'm not sure about buying them and wasting money on something that could stop working (as easily as my original joycons in which I've spent almost 60 dollars on spare parts to keep fixing them, they are already the Theseus' joycon paradox of how many pieces have needed to be changed since 2017).
Azdin of Grinning Wolf Games had a review and we use them all the time, there’s a discount link in description. Perhaps a full review would be good - they’re decent though. Mark
Looking forward getting this game in a coupe of days and I couldn't be more excited. My first approach to the persona series was back in the PSP era with Persona 3 Portable. I loved the story, the game mechanics, the characters and the music. Then I got Persona 4 The Golden for the PS Vita and the experience was even better
Got the game in ps4, only started the first but now it's on switch. This game is perfect especially it's a long RPG that I need to play whenever and wherever.
When I only had a Switch this was a must buy. Now that I landed a PS5 I think that is where I’m going to buy it. I wish you could cross save bc I’d probably buy both versions but I think 60fps/4K on my TV is what I want as I don’t play portable a ton. Feels a little sad bc man I was hyped for it to be on Switch.
Doesn't make sense to wish on something that is already a reality. We're already tethered to the console or gaming hardware at are disposal, but Steam Deck and PC already exist.
Its been sitting on my ps4 shelf for a few years now, i think ill get Royal for switch because its easier for me to play these long jrpgs in handheld. I never would have gotten through p4g if it wasnt on my vita.
honestly the game's artstyle is so beautiful i feel like getting it on switch would be a disservice to the game itself, glad its more accessible, however.
Enjoy! I only just played this game earlier this year after surrendering my three year long wait for a Switch port. And then right after finishing it, the Switch port was announced. It's well worth it! And don't worry, I think MOST fans play with the Dub, in fact, the Persona series as a whole has had pretty good dubs, there's a few off characters in Persona 3, but I doubt any purists are gonna make a stink about it. I will be re-buying this game on Steam, to play on my PC/Steam Deck.
It’s so gratifying to see P5R running so swimmingly on Switch, especially coming off of YEARS of people telling me it wouldn’t work, it wouldn’t be properly optimized, it would run like shit, etc Sometimes I even forget I’m playing it on the Switch. Lol
Played this on PS3 years ago and got to put in about 30hours into it before my PS3 broke. I bought it again on PS4 when I finally got one and put in about 35-40 hours (up to the part where the gang infiltrates 2nd castle). I loved the game the first time, but when I had to play it again for 30+hrs just to get to the point I was before, was definitely tiring and took some enjoyment out of the game. Now I have a Steam Deck and I'm thinking if I should buy the game for it too.
As a person who is a recent fan of the persona thanks to P4G on the vita I will gladly buy the game on switch even when I’ve already own a Xbox with gamepass consider it as me double dipping.
If there is one game that you should play right away it is P5R. Trust me. Unless you already played it, of course. And a word of advice... Consider following my rule for not growing my backlog further: "I will only buy game X if I play it right away"
Nice, I was only interested in the frame rate but I'll let the video running to pad the statistics. P5R really is a great game, in my humble opinion one of the best PS4 titles of the generation. The gameplay is great, especially after Royal smoothed out the rougher edges of the base game and streamlined progression! I also really love the story, as one might expect it's filled to the brim with religious symbolism and and philosophical concepts. Lastly the characters are just stellar, both in English and Japanese, at the end of the game I think most people that engage with the social aspects of the game will probably be invested in at least two or three characters and face a relatively hard choice when deciding on a girl for Joker. I highly recommend it! One tip I'll give is to use a rolling save, basically every time you save save on the next slot and keep rotating save between all slots the game offers. Doing this allows you to experience the game without a guide and without fretting "making mistakes" as you can easily revert a few days or weeks to clean up your act. The game is long, it's an investment and unless it's truly something for you you're likely not immediately replaying the entire game again so treat the save slots like a redo button akin to an isekai anime or something alike, it's well worth it and the game facilitates this style of gameplay through multiple quality of life features like several options to skip dialogue and a plethora of save slots.
Figures that I get Persona 5 on the PS4 before the big Switch reveal. Well, at least now I'll have both Persona games to play through....oh my god....I'm gonna have no life
I say the following as someone who has completed Persona 3, 4 and 5 (PS3 non-Royal vanilla version). The aesthetics, style and soundtrack (wooow, on the latter, for real) are incredible. But even as someone who always plays JRPGs and a fan of the Persona series, THE GAME LENGTH TAKES THE PISS!! Over 100 hours on main story alone (no sidequests) is insanity. I was getting irritated as hell on the last leg as it had long started to drag. BUT how much the Royal version has mitigated this (quality of life timesaving stuff?) I don't know. Also, I could only play at home strapped to the PS3, perhaps this being portable can help people burn through it faster. Whatever the case and the hype, you have been warned!
It's really great that persona is receiving more ports, before this the only Persona games to be on systems other than playstation were Megami Ibunroku Persona (P1) on Windows 95 which was a terrible port and Persona 4 Golden on steam. I really wish Atlus would port Persona 1 and 2 they're masterpieces that need to be played by more people especially the p2 Duology
I would argue that English VA should be the one people default to. Atlus have a fantastic selection of VAs in their catalogue that consistently do an excellent job.
I played the original P5 on PS3, it runs at 720p 30fps with frame pacing issues. The Switch version looks sharper so I highly doubt that it runs at 720p, might be 900p
If people new to metaten games play through Persona and enjoy it, go check out Shin Megami Tensei V, it's a more classical RPG - don't be put of by the relative inaccessibilty of the previous games, V is friendly to newcomers and it probably the best in the series
Brilliant video as always gents! Had my copy pre-ordered, but the place I ordered from are taking the piss. Royal Mail Strikes all across London right now, and they've provided me no updates for the past 5 days, so annoying. Another reason why I usually buy my games digital these days.
Won't be picking up this port myself, but I was really curious at how it was going to turn out. I'm really glad that it turned out well and I hope people who are going to experience this game or series for the first time enjoy it. Definitely my favorite game released in the last decade that I've played.
@@repeekyraidcero you should definitely pick it up, imo it's in the top 10 best games of all time + on top of the 100 hours of gameplay it had alot of replayability
My biggest concern was that the loading times would be very noticeably longer than on the other consoles because you‘re so often changing screens in this game that it would be annoying if they were too long. I‘m glad to hear they managed to keep them pretty short.
I had this problem with the first Little Nightmares so I'm always worried ports might have longer loading times, but I've seen it's not much different from the PS4
@@jujublue4426 there are comparison video somewherr. P5R Switch loading screen are fast as ps5 version, which are faster than ps4. Atlus did a very serious optimalization with this masterpiece.
Play the others somtime they are all great games in their own way just expect them to have some jank that 5 doesn't have Persona 1 and 2 are very diffrent games though if you try them
Both the original P5 and P5R had pedestrians fade in after the scene's already loaded on screen. I don't think it's pop in, but instead a stylistic choice
