Okatsune ... Incredible brand of pruners. Roughly similar costs to Felco options, I would describe them as near top of the line for all sorts of pruning tasks.
I found pairs of Okatsune 103 and 104 on ebay. Found a used pair for a lower price that are in decent shape and I've been happy with them (pair featured in this video, super heavily used and still in amazing shape).
Should go without saying I'm not sponsored or affiliated with this company, all pruners purchased :)
Okatsune 104 is basically the same dimensions as Felco 2 pruners as a reference point. If you have smaller hands, the 103 or lower numbers may be worth exploring.

I have a pair of Tobisho SR-1 secateurs - they look identical to the Okatsune, but I agree, they are superior to the Felco #2. Good piece of kit.

Thanks for the demonstration, I also use felco 2's. After seeing this I will look into some Okatsune's. That many cuts and still going strong without maintenance and sharpening is a pretty sweet thing. Many times the more simply designed tool is more effective, easier to maintain and more fun to use. Thanks!

If you've bought Okatsune, may you answer some question? They are:1)Which one(Okatsune v Felco)is more durable? 2)whose blade needs less sharpening? 3) which one(Okatsune or Felco) has better cutting? 4)what plant are you pruning by your Okatsune & Felco?

As a someone who likes Japanese knives I ws shocked when I saw the scissor blades have a hardness of 61HRC. I only saw one one Japanese knife with that hardness. So I bought a perfect pruning combination with the middle Okatsune pruners and the Silly Gomboy 210 curves which both fit perfectly in the double stacked Okatsune scabbard. The Gomboy curved is perfect for tight spots because the saw is narrower at the tip. And when I have both in one scabbard I always have the best tool on hand for the job.

@@edibleacres Its all about the hardness of the steel this is a cut test of a even harder knife. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m5LWXXz2pHI.html When the steel is harder the edge doesn't wear out that fast but it gets normally more brittle. That's why Japanese toolsmith normally put the hard steel in the middle to cut and sandwich it in softer steel that doesn't brake.

I also like my Okatsune's the best. But I find the biggest issue is the slippery plastic handles. When doing multiple quick cuts, I find my hand slides up the levers and I lose leverage. I added some wraps of electrical tape to provide more gription, but it only lasts a few months before I need to re-wrap. I also found the blades are sharp and somewhat brittle (Okatsune uses some of the strongest steel in the industry) and my pair has some pits where I tried to cut oversize old wood (my fault, but never had that happen with my Felcos, Coronas or Fiskars). Blades stay relatively sharp, but I quickly tune them up everytime I use them to bring back that near-razor sharp edge). For ~$30 on Amazon, a great value-for-money.

So funny that I'm not the first person to tell you that you have perfect timing! I guess it makes sense that everyone is thinking about what they need for spring. I was planning on getting the more entry level Felco 5, but I love how low maintenance the Okatsunes are. I hope you'll do more videos like this because I trust your opinions. I'm also in the market for a small hatchet and a hori hori if you have any recommendations for those! By the way, I don't know how other people feel but I wouldn't be offended if you put affiliate links in the description. I think eBay even has an affiliate program if you want to encourage people to buy secondhand. It wouldn't offend me if you had an Amazon link either. I know I would feel good knowing that you got a little bit of the money I spend.

I appreciate you being supportive of the affiliate idea, but I am happy to shy away from it. Definitely 100% I would never do it with Amazon, that company is evil. My favorites close just like that. Indont know what brand they are but Japanese steel so maybe the same brand so now I know if I have to replace them, but I doubt I will need to because they have lasted 10 years easy so far. Gotta admit - any time I see you recommend a product I trust that recommendation 100% so.... yup I found some on ebay too :) I had been thinking I need to get some better ones... all my pruners currently are either from the early 2000s or older, or else they're Aldi brands :) which work fine unless I'm trying to do scion wood, because they do crush the branches at the cut point a bit and that's not good at all when I'm thinking about making a little bit of an attempt at grafting!
