Elementary and middle school students. Hell some small business folks are transitioning into Google Docs and their drive. However Microsoft with their One Drive could storage and Office 365 will outshine them. Better software and better features, but yes at a cost.

I LOVE how Linus isn’t afraid to tear a product apart even if he can recognize the work it can take to even get it to where it is. I hope these tech companies take Linus’s criticism seriously, he’s no fanboy of anyone. He just wants good products. It’s what we should all strive for. Not good iPhones, not good chrome books, not good surface pros, good tech.

I use one when I go on vacation. It's a $200 computer that doesn't get viruses, I can read my email, check the weather, etc., and display Netflix on the hotel TV screen when my wife and I want to watch something. Best of all I can't use it to do any real work. So since I've started taking it instead of a laptop, I haven't gotten sucked into a single work 'emergency'! But, yeah, it's not work machine (unless your work is surfing the web and answering email), and it's a long way from being one.

My company provided me with a Chromebook to keep at home just for emergencies in case I couldn't get to the office and didn't have my primary Dell Latitude laptop with me (like it was still docked on my desk at the office and I was unexpectedly stuck at home, which has happened many times). What do I DO with said Chromebook? I can do a lot of my work stuff in Chrome OS but not all of it, so I have to use Remote Desktop to get to the rest in Windows. But I can still do everything on the Chromebook. But I sure would rather have my real computer with me if I could because Remote Desktop is slooooooooowwwwww.

It's weird rewatching this again since the iPad has added a USB-C port, external storage support, mouse support and an improved screen rotation system. Basically every pro of the Pixel Slate has been added to the iPad Pro now, although I do still wish Google worked on a Slate-esque device, just at a lower price point with the same premium feel (Surface Pro style)

So they are adding features that others already had (they should sue themselves since they would rather spend resources in court than tech) like copy/paste, file manager. When will they have the ability to download apps outside the App Store? Only feature stopping me from getting one... Will I need he dongle for that? @@bharathjoshua9332 What about downloading files from the developer directly? Like Android has APK files, Pocket PC had CAB and exe. That way if the app becomes available on the app store or even the app store closes down you can still install it as long as you have the file. I never got Windows Phone for that reason, and good thing coz I'd be stuck with a phone only able to use the apps it already has running on it. Where as my older pocket PC I can still install my CAB and EXE files offline.

MPG187 Like honestly. It feels like you complained that they didn't have it. Now that they do you are still complaining. I hate certain aspects of iPadOS on my device, too. When I skype with my boss and split view to look at notes the camera just gets turned off (not Skypes fault, as iPadOS does not handle permissions well in split view); sometimes it just bugs the hell out, but it works very well. 700$ for an iPad Pro is not as expensive, as it might seem, when you compare it to the Chromebook Slave here. As a last argument: Even if not well implemented, there are workarounds to install IPAs and sign them on your own automatically; don't see why you would want to do that though. App Store independency is cool and all, but other than 3 important apps I use, everything important is 0$ in the app store anyways.

Me too. The only problem really with Surface Pro (other than the lack of Type-C port at this gen) is actually also its strength, Windows 10. Not because the OS is bad, but Microsoft for no reason at all hasn't really trying to improve the Tablet Mode since they released Windows 10 on 2015, we did get Pen improvements though so there's that. Microsoft has to really realized that Tablet Mode is really the only thing they have to address and quit this "Windows 8-phobia" which seems they are really avoiding anything from that OS. Windows 8 was not great for desktop, but it was for tablet use and they have to be open and get all the great ideas from Windows 8 that works for tablets. People were complaining about Windows 8 on desktop, but not on tablets (except for apps which is entirely different problem).

KornKernel yes I agree. For now I have gotten past the usb c limitation by using the over expensive surface connect to usb c adapter with a usb c hub. Hopefully they improve on the tablet features and include usb c in next revision.

Yeah, Windows-based 2in1s are just more capable (and they also come in ultra-cheap versions for sub-300$). Windows can pretend to be a tablet OS decently enough to be usable as one, but Android isn't nearly good enough at pretending to be a full-sized OS.

I bought an Asus Chromebook Flip C100 whatever it's called YEARS ago and I've always loved it. Super lightweight, was only 200-ish bucks and serves as my go to for certain things. It's great but that's largely due to the fact that it was so absurdly cheap. An expensive Chromebook is like expensive fast food.

Amen, and they updated the flip C100, it's all-metal and has two USB-C ports now...and it's still only $200, it's PERFECT. Meanwhile, I have no idea what I'd even do with a more powerful version (as I too have a real laptop and desktop), the extra money just seems to make it less portable (the C100 is 10inches) and have a shorter battery. I can chuck 15 chrome tabs onto the C100....what else do I need it for?

thanks linus! you're not jaded, this review is totally on point with my experiences having owned a pixelbook for the last year and been on chrome os for almost two now since moving from IOS. i did pay good money for the pixelbook and think almost everyday "wtf" with its bugs, apps not working properly, lag on the pen, just issue after issue, even if its not big, just the noticeable things that make the experience feel like we are testing out a not fully finished OS. keep up the critical reviews! thanks :)

What's sad as that Google really had the opportunity to make the perfect OS. What they should have done is taken a lightweight Linux distro and added all the google stuff to it, like the store, g suite, chrome, google assistant and prettied it up. Then KEPT existing Linux features, like support for 3rd party apps through the terminal. They also should have had two skews, one for ARM and one for x86-64. This creates an OS that is functional, fast, and secure for everyone, whether that be a grandma that just uses facebook or the developer/power user.

I've got a Surface Pro but the 2018 iPads are really better drawing devices. If that's your thing of course. If you need a laptop/tablet go for the SP.

If chrome os is all about being lightweight and basically windows light. Why do all the devices it's on cost so much. The chrome os lineup should be $200-$500. Otherwise chrome os needs to be a real os.

Chromebooks had a niche. They were incredibly cheap and did basically everything you needed if you just needed the basics. When they first announced chromebooks with core i5s and i7s I called it a mistake because it doesn't have a fucking purpose. The OS just can't take advantage of that hardware. It's increasing the price for no benefit, and the price was what chromebooks had going for them.

From what people have found in updates, it seems very likely that the Google ChromeOS devices are getting multiboot support very soon, that could radically change the situation esp. if the price drops and they include a Windows license. Then they'd be trading blows with a Surface in terms of desktop experience, while delivering a much better tablet experience.

@@me2olive They already have an option to enable the Linux shell. If you want the complete desktop experience you can install Linux with Crouton. Both ways work.

The stroke trailing behind isn’t lag. It’s called “correction” in a lot of programs, and many artists use it to make their drawings smoother. Or there’s absolutely no option to turn that off and it really is just lag.

Well... Stroke correction can introduce lag, but you usually can adjust the amount you want. Also, to me it seems that SAI and FireAlpaca are the only two programs that does stroke correction right, just as a side note.

His strokes looked incredibly smooth so I am inclined to agree with this. lag tends to provide jagged edges or substantial visual blips. neither of which were shown in demonstration. I also use krita for art (seriously recommend it).

You can run Linux on it I'm pretty sure. It's better then Chrome OS, but there are still some things you need windows for depending on what you are working on.
