As a school social worker, I would love to hear more about home education without putting down or exaggerating the challenges of public education. Plenty of smart, compassionate folks in the public school space who always get thrown under the bus when the homeschool convo comes around. Always appreciate hearing folks simply describe why they chose (ie. had the privilege of choosing) home school without crapping on public education.
My go to is, "I have a full plate but its all delicious" Being honest and stating you're busy or maybe overwhelmed or stretched thin is important- others need to know they're not alone. But spinning it in a positive light matters as well ❤

I’ve been following since Elvis was a baby, and it’s been amazing to watch your family grow and evolve. Your life is beautiful, healthy and wholesome. As an ethical vegan (of over 33 yrs!), thank you for raising healthy and ethical humans. ❤️ (I have you listed on my homemade vegan resource fliers that I give out as part of my outreach) Re answers to common “How are you doing?” questions, I feel like most ppl are in habit mode - on both sides - when those types of questions are asked. Most askers don’t really want an honest answer (and seem offended when the answer is different than what they expect), and most repliers aren’t really honest. My own life is quite dark and I refuse to be falsely pollyannish when asked that question - which usually catches the asker off guard. Most don’t know what to do with it. I think in general ppl need to be more real in their interactions - even if it’s at a grocery store checkout stand. Not all lives are rosey. I know this is a bit different than what Ellen talked about - her point being that she didn’t want to be the answer that she usually gives - albeit truthful, but I think a lot about this subject and wanted to share my take.
My mom and i were just talking about this on the phone the other day.....trying to stop saying your busy....it's hard. But the way we are both trying to respond differently is to say " I have a very full life " and smile about it.....no eye roll or sighing. We have kids, homeschooling them both, moving, businesses, work, and it's sometimes overwhelming and to say that out loud somehow makes us feel better ......but in all actuality it makes us feel resentment or at least sound like we resent the busy life we have. So.....from now on y'all...... " We have a very full life " 😁👍❤️
I think Americans especially typically answer, "Keepin busy" or, "Hanging in there, been busy," etc. I think for some it's a sense of pride, for some it's just the truth for the season of life they're in, but for others I believe it can be an excuse (intentionally or not). I know I've certainly used it that way! Wonder how it would be if the language was changed to, "Doin good - life is so full right now!" Seems like just that simple phrase change takes away the negative connotation? Do a Podcast exploring this - could be fun!
Better than us Germans: "could be worse" or "things are going: backwarts and downhill". Perceiption creates truth and we should be careful not to create our own reality with negative language. Americans have very positive language compared to many other countries. I actually wished Americans were more transparent with negative emotions. "How are ya?" "Good, how are you?" is not a conversation but a lie.
Thank you for sharing Miss Dagny’s first food with us. It’s a special moment in a baby’s life. Some cultures even hold a special ceremony around that occasion.

Homeschool mom here... my friends know I hate the word "busy". I always so I have such full days. What a more fulfilling essence! 🌈 You remind me of me years ago. Now I'm deep into ballet with my oldest and gymnastics team with the other as well as parkour, piano, homeschool group, etc. Absolutely CHERISH those younger years & precious days just painting and playing!!!

When someone used to ask how I’m doing my go to answer was always good. So over the last few years I’ve intentionally tried to think about the question and answer truthfully.
Definitely also cried when you were remembering Scouts reaction to Dagny being born 🥲 and your sister had shared a video a while back talking about changing the wording of being busy to life being full and that has really helped change my perspective and how I look at the fuller (busier) seasons!

Ive become a doula because i want every woman to be able to access what i have also experienced, that my births are always the best moment of my life, and yes, that moment of finding out what the baby is, for me personally is just glorious, I wouldn’t give it up for anything.

You had asked the question of how to answer when someone asks you how you are doing. I honor that you want to release any kind of identity to how you answer. I found for myself that when I answered with any kind of story about my past, ie ... last hour, yesterday, recently ... it was always an answer about my judgment of it. And honestly, people really do not want to know unless you give them some good news. Otherwise, they do not know what to do with the information. I've learned to give an answer of the moment. ie ... "I love being here with you". "At this moment, I couldn't be any better!" "The way things are going, I'm currently upright and smiling." Everything else is just a story about the past and the past is in the past and not relevant to the moment. So if I ask you at this moment how you are doing, what could you say about this moment without a story?
Your family is beautiful. I try so hard to be calm and relaxed and enjoy life like you do but man it's hard my upbringing didn't prepare me to be that happy lol

When people ask me how I am it’s always “busy”….high stress job and kids. Wish I could change this season into a slower one but doing what I can to squeeze in just resting time.
Being a single mom of 4, travel nurse and almost 20 years in the military and providing everything for my kids because their dad doesn’t I am super busy. I don’t know life any other way. But instead of saying busy I like to say “I’m better than I deserve”…it’s a Dave Ramsey quote that I love. Gets people thinking.

They are good with their money but you don’t understand how expensive it is in Hawai’i, and 6 kids going to private school is ridiculous. Based off their videos they are more likely to send to a Montessori school and those are very expensive and their kids are young. That’s a lot of school

One of the sweetest and most profoundly heart warming things that I've heard came from the mouth of my daughter. She is such a patient loving sister. We were at the grocery store and some one complimented her on it and asked why/how. This nine year old said, "I've wished for my sister my whole life I can't imagine doing anything but loving her." At 12 she is still the best sister to her now 4 year old baby sister. They definitely are souls interwoven in this universe their bond is so strong. We were at my oldest's soccer tournament and my youngest ran out in the field to defend her when a component got too physical. I imagine them in adulthood when I've passed and I'm comforted in the confidence I have that they will always have each other. I share all this because I see a similar bond between you and your sister and your daughters. There is something magical in a sisterly bond.
