Finally someone properly putting this thing through the paces. By that I mean putting it in a more of a mix, playing with it to make music first and foremost. Nothing wrong with the NOISE BOX GO BOOM beats, or more experimental stuff out there, I often dig that too, but this was the video I was searching for. Great sounding jams and nicely produced as usual - thanks.
It has all the knob per function I love and look and sound, but not any the features I need still it’s one of my favorite that came out lately and love the build and color.
Wow, as a drummer, I think that is one hell of a cool drum machine. I'd love to make some evolving weirdness and play acoustic drums over it. I also really enjoyed your music making with this thing.
Benn Jordan, The last two hardware jams starting in about @14:46 are spot on. Very lovely. I see this instrument taking you on a diversion of your regularly scheduled productions cultivating a new sub genre of yourself. Iterations are everywhere. Nice 1.
Adding on to your comment about the state of drum machines, I’ve noticed that most of them that are neither sample based nor old school Roland derivatives tend to be grooveboxes rather than straight, pure drum machines. So while this one isn’t for me I really appreciate what Erica is doing here to advance the world of drum machines.
Hi Benn. What happened to your favourite synthesizer? Is the Arturia Polybrute still the one, and do you still have/use it? Many youtubers said many good things, but almost nobody seems to make new videos about it. What are we missing?
I'm glad so many people love the sounds this machine makes, because to me it sounds like every other German drummachine that came out in the past 20 years. Not that that's a bad thing, but it sounds very dated. But probably not to people elsewhere in the world.
great demo....................just a tiny comment. The word is PARAMETERS, not PERIMETERS...........lovingly sent and not an attempt at 'one ups-manship'
Huge. If I was super free, I could become a drum machine soloist. Regarding the weird and whacky capability, John Grant and Damon Albarn will definitely want one.
I wish each voice could have a broadcast-style delay on its path to the mix, with a live out and cue functionality. I don't play live, so maybe there's a trick to do this (insert cables?) without too much mess...being able to tweak something and have a quick undo option would lead to much more creativity in live situations because there'd be less risk of strange ass sounds coming into the mix, like unexpectedly resonant snare farts.
Sweet box. I pulled the trigger on the Syntrx ii instead, and they've provided no updates on it, which is a bummer. I'm looking forward to it, whenever it comes.
A beautiful machine and I'm GASing hard, but with that color it constantly looks like it has the wrong white balance in pictures and video, it's wierd! Great video Benn!
Nice piece of gear. Only to bad things, its expensive and it mono. But i guess you got the individual outs for the second one... and yes the "x out of 4" thing. "Per-cycle conditions" or however they are called... when that was introduced to the octatrack... it really is like a much better way of expanding the sequencer length. It's easier to program, it doesn't need a higher memory. I don't know how other brands are not introducing this to their sequencers. I'd be so happy to have this in the mc707.
It's awesome, but maaaan, if it was $1200-$1500 it would sell A LOT more. $2k is just a hell of a lot for a "somewhat limited" (I understand that is focused) drum machine, imo.
Good review. I think that paired with other machines it would be fun. If it cost 500-1k less than would be a buy. But no, 2k too expensive. Rytm better option. Or for 2k, get a Digitone and Syntakt together powerful combo.
man i'm really trying very hard to save my money and since this drum machine was announced i was like damn i'm never gonna have money in my life. and you know i'm trying real hard here, and what is your contribution to that? "NEW FAVORITE..." fml
i'm still suffering because of that easel command...... luckily i didn't go for YOUR NEW FAVORITE SYNTHESIZER and settled with a nymphes for my poly needs... still tho... i ain't even watch this damned video :D
I heard Perkons many times on big system, first time even before it was released. Kodek and Leo Novuss are absolute monsters playing it. With couple FX pedals you can basically play a whole set on Perkons. And boyyy it sounds good live. Thick and punchy.
Hey Benn, you make really engaging and interesting videos. You have a uniqueness in the sea of youtube. Thanks for spending the time to share this awesome synth with us.
Yip, if I was rich this would be the drum machine I'd buy. Sounds great, sounds unique, does weird stuff too, love those types of knobs like on my Manhattan Analog modules. Looks literally built like a tank. They even put it in a kind of sea foam green / ocean turquoise that would great with a Fender Jaguar propped against it.
@@compucorder64 Good thing you said "literally". I 'd hate for anyone to think you were speaking rhetorically. Or hyperbolically. Or ironically. Thank you for making that distinction.
It's really not, the TR-909 was released in 1983 at an MSRP of $1195 which is $3,648 in today's dollars. Full-size, full-feature, high-quality machines have come DOWN in price over the years, but the availability of Volcas and Behringer clones has skewed peoples' expectations of cost. Sure you can get a TR8S for $600-700 but look at the difference in build quality, the size of the company, etc. The sheer number of tact switches and high-quality knobs and pots on the Perkons drives the manufacturing costs way up plus metal case vs plastic, smaller company, etc.
@CT-ho6si I'm not suggesting the price isn't merited but it nevertheless is quite a bit more than I'd spend on a drum machine and, against the economic backdrop, it's definitely eye-watering for me personally
So many new cool drum machines/drum synths coming out. The pulsar 23, HD-01, Landscape Fm Noon (you should get your hands on one) and the THC syncussion mini!
I just sampled your tour through all the algorithms and modes for the four different instruments. Then chopped them up and exported them all over to my Roland TR8S. It's got probability, effects and tons of tweaks and mangles for each sample. It sounds awesome and fits my budget better than the Perkons. Thanks Benn! Awesome review as always.
I love this and want this. There's so much scope for constantly evolving rhythmscapes. I definitely appreciated the sounds more when the arty shots of your gear accompanied them at 16:27 in the same way that Max Cooper's music is enhanced by his collaborators' trippy visuals. Is there a reason why you say "perimeter" instead of "parameter?" It bugs me for no reason. Perhaps I'm ignorant of a different meaning. My jam-mate used to say "rift" instead of "riff" and that used to bug me in the same way; only in a minor way, mind you.
Accents vary. My name is Terry. I've had people pronounce it everything from Turry to Tee-ry to Tarry to Taaahry. Seems like a weird thing to get bugged about.
@@MrOhioutod I retract most of that part. Bugged is the wrong word. It's far, far less than that. A stressful day at work brings the negativity out. A world on the brink creates stress that's constant. I should be more wholesome. It's difficult though. Blessed be. (no sarcasm)
It kind of reminds me of the pen-pin merger, but for schwas. Not sure if that has a name or if it's already covered by that merger. (The pa- in parameter is a schwa but the -ra- is definitely not, but I think the tongue is being led by the first vowel just because "pe-ra" is a bigger distance for the tongue to jump than "pe-ri"?) I am purely a hobbyist linguist though, my actual education was in physics so please take this giant salt crystal to go along with my information.
Drum machine lull? I have to remind myself I don’t need anymore drum machines (but there’s so many cool ones) Lol Ones I lust after Moog DFAM (Analog drum synth) Model Cycles (FM!) Volca Kick (filter rez) Ones I own Volca Drum (digital drum synth) All the Circuits. (Sample based) Electribes (sample based) Drum Computer (ios drum synth) {my fav drum machine ever} No 808s we’re harmed in the making of this post
