Actual stem here. Just because something is a protein doesn't mean it's digestible. Things made of keratin (specifically your hair and nails,) cannot be digested. That's why you hear stories of people who suffer from Pica and eat hair, they end up needing surgery because their intestines are clogged with hair. She may in fact be referring to that but avoided naming it because it’s an inherently political book (JP vtubers and especially the ones with corporate contracts and managers strongly avoid politics in order to maximize broad marketability) or she may have honestly forgotten the girls name since that region of world history isn’t taught much in Japan except in very broad strokes mostly touching on major events. You’re right that the book isn’t handed out as a reading assignment in schools (it’s not in most US schools either because of parents groups being against it). There is a Japanese language version though. She may have come across it in a library.

On the other hand, I suppose this is what makes someone a good/entertaining character, regardless of whether they're really like that or just good enough at acting the part.
