Skip to 0:44 to go straight to her accent voice clip.
Okayu accidentally revealed where she's from when she mentioned tamago miso, and leaned into it by posting a voice tweet of her speaking in her native Tohoku dialect.
Notes on the accent/dialect: The Tohoku dialect is usually considered a rural accent. Although the go-to localization for any non-standard Japanese dialect is usually the American southern accent, I tried to go with a closer parallel.
With the Tohoku dialect being a northern, rural accent, there's a few analogues in America. I went with a Maine accent, as Maine is similarly rural and chilly. (I know there's other rural, northern accents on the West Coast and in the Midwest, but I'm even less familiar with those, let alone those of other English-speaking countries)
The Maine accent might not have come across in phoneticized text, but it's slightly similar to a Boston accent (or if you're from the UK, think West Country)
Tl:dr Accents and dialects are hard.

As someone out in the sticks I can very much assure you we do not say wicked. At least not in any of the rural areas that I know of. Also I know that this is stupid but I could not read the whole thing in a southern accent at all. No one I know says gram when referring to their grandma. We just say gramma, you only say gram if you are referring to the grams in the metric scale. (which rarely happens) Or someone has a particularly thicc accent and they are talking about there good friend grant.

For anyone who's wondering how Okayu's accent is different from "normal" Japanese: The Northern Tohoku accent's defining characteristic is that the sounds "i" and "u" have mixed together. shi and su, chi and tsu、ji and zu have no difference between them. Su-shi (Sushi), su-su (Soot), and shi-shi (Lion) all sound like "shishi". and the one anyone can notice in the above clip is the use of the "sa" particle. In standard Japanese "ni" and "e" let you describe the time, destination, and direction an event is happening. The Tohoku accent replaces both "ni" and "e" with "sa" and you can hear it a lot in the clip because Okayu is describing going somewhere with her Grandma.
@Yuki-bi2jr
@Yuki-bi2jr 3 года назад
Isnt the "sa" she's using more as a replacement for something like "nee"? Like saying "sou nandakedo sa-" instead of "sou nandakedo ne-". Grew up with a bit of akita-ben so im not really sure though.

Eh it isn't so strong compared to like Korone or Noel. Aomori's still in Eastern Japan, so the accent has a fair bit in common with Tokyo's. As someone who learned Japanese in an academic sense and who wanted to make a trip through the whole country as soon as it is possible again: I am really scared I won't understand the people of the north. @noneday310
@noneday310 3 года назад
Don't worry, as someone who has grown up speaking japanese, even I don't understand northern accents lol. Some Kansai dialects are even harder to understand to the point where native speakers really can't understand what's being said at all. In other words, you aren't the only one who only understands "traditional" Japanese lmao
@ProfesserLuigi
@ProfesserLuigi 3 года назад
The trick to understanding unusual accents is to learn the rules to an accent. Learn what sorts of syllables are skipped, what's slurred together, what sounds are pronounced differently, what area specific words are used, stuff like that. Then you can keep that in mind when listening and you'll begin to get more of it.
@Idiomatick
@Idiomatick 3 года назад
I finished JLPT1 ... like 5yrs ago? and lived in Japan. Most people in Japan can speak standard-ish. You'll have no problems at all aside from speaking to a few elderly people. But this isn't just something from the north .... most rural areas will have accents. The south is by far the thickest though.
@SkelechickenLives
@SkelechickenLives 3 года назад
Like Idiomatick suggests, you really only run into problems with the older generations. Japanese is growing a little more standardized all around. I've been living in a pretty rural area and sometimes my students drop some weird regional stuff on me that I don't immediately understand, but for the most part it is all still clear. Old Man Japanese will always be a challenge, especially in regions with different accents, but never something insurmountable, and overall you will have more experience with standard Japanese with maybe a strange word here or there.

As she clearly states,she still has a slight accent. But she is obviously recognize Tohoku person.(The term "batcha" is not even known to people who speak standard Japanese.) Batcha is the way my grandmother is mainly called in Tohoku. There are many dialects scattered throughout Japan. I’m from Yamagata(the same as Tohoku region with Okayu). Even within the same Yamagata Prefecture, each place has its own dialect. In many cases, even Japanese people cannot communicate with each other.(If you live in Tokyo or the Kanto region, this will never happen to you.) Local people come to Tokyo to learn and adapt to the standard language. Even in Japanese anime, dialects are frequently used in anime set in regional areas, and even Japanese people sometimes need to use subtitles. Even if you are Japanese, you may find this refreshing. Okinawa, Kyushu, and Tohoku are said to have particularly severe accents. The Ryukyuan and Tsugaru dialects in particular are like different languages. By the way, I don't understand accents outside of Tohoku.

OMG her Aomori accent is just too cute. Definitely reminds me of Arata from Chihayafuru.

Feels like i hear my friend that has similar accent (not japanese). It could be because Okayu is the one doing it but my friend also has sweet and soft intonation that unique to certain area.

Okayu's voice is adorable. But with her natural accent... (OUH!) [Wonderballs was died of cuteness overload by Nekomata Okayu using 'Natural Accent'.]

Okayu sounds even more chill and cute with that accent, she should use it more often.
