this stuff may seem silly to modern mma guys and even what is now called traditional arts, but whatever your style is these exercises will certainly make you better at your craft. these old timers knew what worked , especially the real makiwara. few tools more valuable when training for striking power. fantastic post!
The weight training is what gets me, I've been studying to be a physical therapist, and like most idiots online.... I'm an avid weightlifter. Karate mixed with weightlifting can make for a super super powerful killing karate, but the some of the strange training here just over stretched the joints, and put the body in peculiar positions, I can tell it's an old video. Thank you for posting this, it has taught me much.
I agree. we have both the modern heavy bags and weights, as well as the traditional makiwari. Makiwari are the same as a heavy bag Richard, only they are much harder. imagine hitting a tree full force instead of hitting a much softer (relatively speaking) heavy bag. Same drills as other styles just a different object, they don't "kick air" just so you know. This is a demo of some of the tools used. Jars aren't for speed actually but for strength and hardness. Different tools that is all.
I really don't know for sure about the U.S. Okinawa and Japan are where the best schools are, but here in the states you really have to check the background of a Karate school before joining because there have been a lot of bad schools. Check first to see if they actually teach a true Okinawan or Japanese style and not some "Joe Bob's American Shaolin Karate" thing, and then check to make sure their training course and instructors are legit. That's the most I can suggest.
Fair play to ya. I'd like to learn that kind of style. I truly wasted my time in the place near me as a child. Glad I now do PROPER martial arts. I can truly say there is good karate and there is bad karate.
My art and my Hanshi (who is Okinawan) is Okinawan Te. But with the style of training nowadays, I only really see Goju Ryu (and not even often) that practices using Hojo Undo. Most use more modern ways (punching bags, etc). We still have some of those things in our Dojo, but we don't use them. I'm assuming they've gone almost out of existence due to class sizes and dangers.
@filmfan555 The reason they look like that is because 1) they are a bit old, so they will stop developing muscles and go through a whole body transformation (younger martial artists might exhibit a more defined body) and 2) Real Martial Arts training is mostly endurace-based, and its done daily. This sort of daily, endurance training doesn't allow the muscles to grow in size as they are constantly broken down. If you look at bodybuilders, their training is weekly but very intense- very different
yes it might be true to you, until you kick one of these guys and break your shin on his arm. Uechi Ryu, my style, is a life long process. and it is NOT about fighting. There is no place for sparring in it. every blow is deadly and designed to be like that. You want to spar take a different style. Attack an Okinawan master, and watch when he spears you in the throat also when you carry jugs every day for 40 years your arms become like steel, It is about spirit NOT about fighting.
@filmfan555 Completely depends on the training. BodyBuilders gain strength through intense workouts done a few times a week, and they use weights most of the time. Karate, for example, is done daily and it uses the body's weight, like push ups, in an endurance type of way, like holding a stance, holding jars, and slow/controlled movements. The strength every B-B and Martial Artist from every style gains is entirely dependant on what they want, so you cant simply compare strength like that lol
squeezing with out holding something, or if you like a barbell. all that matters about it is that you make the fist hard. I have seen shaolin training and you are right they are incredible. I am truly sorry I was arrogant, but i got defensive about this because it is my style. As someone else commented this is a demo of "some" of the tools that are used. we do do pushups, situps, crunches, squats. We also hit makiwari not heavy bags. I am sorry for being so defensive.
Research, research, research. I began with Kenpo(meh), but I moved on to Goju Ryu and Judo, which I preferred. But I haven't trained since I was 21, when injuries and bankrupcy set me back and made martial arts a luxury I could no longer afford. But there are several online sources(not just Wiki) that you can look into, as well as books on the various styles and their histories.
Honestly? An honest answer would be it's impossible for me to say. Shorin Ryu, Goju Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Gosoku Ryu, Isshin Ryu, Shito Ryu, Wado Ryu, Shotokan, Kyokushin, they all have aspects that are beneficial to a Karateka. One would have to train in all of them and apply them in combat to answer your question, which is impossible. Choose whichever style works best for you. Adding Judo, Jujitsu, FMA, and Kobudo is a plus. As Gosoku Ryu founder Takayuki Kubota once said, "Karate is Karate!"
Nice to know. I was looking for the TRUE karate styles. I did a garbage little kids karate class when I was younger. I want PROPER stuff. Thanks for the list.
@filmfan555 i dont think they run much, so they arent defined. like how power lifters are huge and not defined . this is like stregnth and endurance traing
@budobrubbie wasnt talking to you. as for my being a poor student or having a poor teacher, you are correct ; neither my teacher nor myself were ever very wealthy.
@afromnkydude sadly (for some of us), it has. sort of like how paintball has taken the place of real handguns, and the due respect that the handling of them once commanded.
We must separate the WARRIOR for the competitor. Let them have their fun, sport, and game while we train to stay alive. THE ENEMY MUST DIE SO YOU WON'T DIE! Richard Duarte.
Like George Saint Pierre, he mixed weightlifting and Karate very well. Too bad I study under Muay Thai for the most part, I almost want to study Karate now. I do love Karate.
@corvanjer Uuuh, no, it isn't, whilst sinking into a sumo or horse stance is better than an MT or KB stance, catching one on the lurch is an almost guaranteed shoot or throw, most Karateka are poo in the clinch, and almost none can sprawl. If you can grapple, your opponent can't, and he isn't twice as large, you can almost always get a TD, you might not get a great position, but unless they can grapple on the ground that's immaterial.
Repetition, strength. make a fist as tight as you can, hold it for ten seconds release, do that everyday 500 times a day for 60 years, your forearms will turn into steel bars. It happens anywhere. find a blacksmith ask him to make a fist and feel his forearms they will be rock hard too. It happens when you use your muscles. feel a marathon runners legs they will be like steel. it is just a fact of life. and again I am not dissing your style, i am merely talking about mine.
Yes, Shorin Ryu and Uechi Ryu as well. Sorry, I would have included them, but they only give you 300 characters to work with on youtube. I would also add Wado Ryu and Gosoku Ryu to that list.
Dude I am gonna take okinawan. It looks amazing! Hey do you think if the person is good enough, like a black belt en such, do you think he can beat someone who knows Brazilian ju-juitsu?
@neo19dude Sir this is the thrue spirit of Karate, train your min, soul, body., and respect others. you have my deep respect for an kyokushinkai karate fellow. OSU!
@sirchristian12 i onestly don't know about it, but i think that a good karateka, with a good all around training, based on basics (kihon) forma and applications(kata and bunkai) and sparing related exercises, sensibility training and sparring (kumite) could easily confront with anyone =) the outcome, obviously is based on personl abilities. sorry for my poor english, just my 2 cent =)
How would you know what capacities build a warrior? In training to be a true warrior I build with deadly speed training not by carrying jugs. I would prefer to practice blocks and blows for thousands of hours and strike with deadly force.
What, you don't think Karate practitioners practice punching, blocking, and kicking as well? This video accurately demonstrates traditional conditioning exercises and thats all. If you go to a traditional Karate dojo (like I do) you will throw hundreds of punches every class to improve speed, technique, and power.
thx for the answers, yes you might be right, havent thought about that but in that case they should be stronger (i actually believe it, because i believe in the strentgh of martial arts, especially in karate, cause i do it by myself) than any bodybuilder with fat muslces shouldnt they?
About the fist squeezing, ur saying u just squeeze your hands without holding anything? and a blacksmith's hands r hard cuz of the friction and always grabbing things all the time. I say shaolin is the best cuz they do actual WORKOUTS like pushups, pullups, pistol squats, exercises like that.
i know how well-trained they are, how fit they are and how hard the original okinawan training is. but why i reaaally seldom see someone whose muscles are defined like they actually have to be? why they dont look like their training? actually they have to look like musclemans havent they? i really wonder...
find an okinawan goju ryu/uechi ryu school in your area, okinawa karate is greatly spread wordwide today ;) where do you live? maybe i could help you :)
I agree completely cause thats what I did and wasted 5 years of my childhood doing, never got a black belt but many people ended up 8th dans at that place and were teachers in adulthood. I was taught by an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE of a teacher. I'll stick with the Bujinkan for now.
It's very upsetting to me to see people waste time practicing a style for so long only to realize its worthless. I've had the privilege of learning over 50 years ago the original style developed by the Okinawans Ancient Okinawa-Te. I have been practicing and teaching ever since then, and I have NEVER deviated. The Okinawans believed in 1 block 1 blow - THE ENEMY MUST DIE! .
@budobrubbie too much of toudi-jutsu has been lost due to lack of honor and character. it must be redeveloped by responsible masters. there is no honor in keeping secrets from your own following, its a testament to ones own weakness the last publication of the bubishi made me disgusted third level bunkai and beyond should never be withheld from any student, i teach it to any student with the aptitude and desire too much of goju-ryu has been turned into mindless movement.
