www.joepryor.com. As President of The Oklahoma Association of REALTORS I don't create legislation on my opwn but as a group we are advocates for our property owners, and our community. In Oklahoma County we have 20,000 abandoned properties, many neglected for 3 years or more. This cost the city millions in lost revenues that take care of essential services. There is not a mechanism that compels the owner to either fix up or sell to someone who will, but The Abandoned property Act is in this legislative session and I urge all Oklahomans to look at why we need to stop the abuse of the homeowners around these properties in oklahoma who care, and elevate all of housing, not just the housing for the higher incomes people. This is important to our city and our state.

Real property ownership is a right not a privilege. This is a dangerous idea that gives the government even more subjective power to take property if it doesn't meet the government's standards. I don't understand how this effort is to "grab the attention" of the land owner when liens and costs didn't previously. It would be just another layer of government control and bureaucracy.

This is something here in California especially in desert locations as well, much of this property should be made available for improvement by willing people who will pay the taxes for the property, and I don't think the people who abandoned it should be compensated if you abandoned your car it gets towed if not claimed sold at auction or recycled, I've found many abandoned home's I would love to rehabilitate and live on, thus pay taxes, spend money on improvement, and more. Sigh.

Joe, I have a question for you. Im in constructin and Im looking to obtain or purchase some of these abandoned properties at the lowest cost possible , one at a time, so that I can build new houses or rebuild existing houses. How could I go about that there, in the city? Do you have any tips you could give me. If I can get them at a low cost then I believe I can bring them back to thier previous state and put them on the market... tips??

But I believe this will never happen because people fear that it could happen to them if they walk away or unable to keep up the property. I get it, but we need solutions because those properties become drug dens, vandalized, set on fire, eye sores depressing the communities they are in, including being hazardous from deterioration.
