I don't think even Rodgers and Hammerstein realized what they were writing. They were so focused on the music and dances that it flew over their heads what they were doing with the actual story.
Can we just all appreciate Hugh’s acting from 2:30 on? His smug and comical reactions to Jud really getting into the song are the reason I find this so hysterical 😂
The last 20/30 seconds where they sing "Poor Jud" in harmony ... GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS!!!!! Haven't seen this for years but absolutely loved it, have to consider buying soundtrack and DVD now =P lol xoxox
I remember when I played jud fry. After every night people came up to me, saying sorry you didn't get the girl, I felt so sorry for you. One night someone came up to me and said I wanted you to win, I thought curly was a dick lol
I have to laugh at this because I was in a production of OKLAHOMA! and our Curly and Judd made the song quite comical. Espically when you actually think about it because Curly is making fun of Judd and Judd doesn't get it.
I was in two productions of Oklahoma -- once in a summer camp production as Curly and another time in college I played Judd. I have to say that Curly had the billing and the songs but doing Judd Frye was more fun!
Stockwell Santley Honestly the more I think about the revival the more I like it. It requires a bit of processing. So it could be better if I saw it again tbh.
Stockwell Santley I was seated across the table from Patrick when the lights went out so anxiety lol. And I was like very aware that a gun was gonna go off. It was genuinely terrifying.
Wait, this Curly guy is supposed to be the hero? Isn't he trying to get this guy to kill himself? I never watched all of Oklohoma before, but this "hero" seems like a sociopath here.
I don't think it's meant to be. That's the genius of Roger and Hammersteins music. It was very ahead of its time and looking back now, it's super dark and actually shows the hero in a negative light and shows another dimension to the villian other than him just being the evil villian character. Even a few songs in this musical had to be censored for the film because they were too dark for cinema.
Poor Logan's dead, poor Wolverine is dead Come gather, mutants, round his grave and cry His healing factor's gone, his actor's moving on Oh why'd our favorite X Man have to die?
Remember watching this in theater class in middle school I was like what is this until I seen Hugh jackman so I was like let me give it a chance and they sung this song 🤧🥲
I love this song soo much & this will always be my favourite version! However I do feel like Gordon Macrae has a slightly better voice in this performance over Hugh Jackman, However I personally think Shuler Hensley sings Juds part alot better. That would be a truly spine tingling rendition if Gordon and Shuler had performed together
I've heard a lot of renditions of Jud Fry. But I say, Shuler Hensley's singing voice is super powerful and rich. It's hard to beat his. I've tried singing Lonely room and Jud's part in Poor Jud is dead, I sound good but nowhere as good as Shuler
It's ironic that Shuler Hensley who plays Jud in this also plays Frankenstein's Monster in Van Helsing. He is another tragically misunderstood recluse. Opposite Hugh Jackman who plays Van Helsing himself
I love how this song's melody parallels the classic "here comes the bride", since they contradict each other. I saw this show a little over a month ago in LA and pretty much every song with Curly was nothing more than Curly playing an acoustic guitar and, like, just...no. I hadn't heard almost any of the songs before seeing it and even then, I just felt like there was something wrong with what I was hearing. I'm all for updating classic musicals (my mom and I loved our showing's version of "Can't Say No", because it turned it from "Well, I'm a weak girl who has to listen to men" to "I'm a woman with needs and I can't help myself" and the actress played it to perfection), but don't change the actual music. Update the lyrics a little if they're on the offensive side, but don't change the music itself (on a case by case basis, I'm all for playing into your actor's strengths, which may or may not include changing the music, but this isn't one of those instances). Like, it should be Oklahoma for a new audience and you shouldn't have to have already seen it to like it.
hey its wolverine! lol. that was unexpected. watching this 'cuz saw my niece's theater company doing this yesterday (she was Laurey, and killed it)... and this scene had me very amused.
I'm actually working on this song this month. I'm looking forward to singing it at music recital. I've wanted to perform this song for a number of years
Things could've taken a different turn for Jud if Curly was a Christian and had told Jud about Jesus. I mean imagine how things would've turned out if Curly felt compassion for Jud and acted like Paul the apostle. Jud would've felt the deep warmth of Jesus's love and Jud would've turned into a new man. But no, Curly just had to be responsible for helping Jud become even more of a really angry beast and creepy stalker
While I definitely here what your saying and I kind of agree, you have to remember that curly's only motive is to court/marry Laurey. In a way it is Laurey's fault for telling him that she is going to the dance with Jud, in fact, she should not have said yes to Jud when asked her if she really didn't wan't to go with him. But hey that's just my opinion. if there is one you can't convince of and that is Jud is a real creep. I've only seen the movie version of this so take my opinion with a grain of salt😊God bless you
I will seriously pay people to not drag politics into all of my childhood memories. Or just daily life. Seriously, do you just need everyone to be sad or argumentative??
