The Sooners rally from behind to win a close one in Dallas, despite OU QB Nate Hybl throwing ducks to the white jerseys all day long. (from Oct. 12, 2002)
I dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a method to get back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me
Of all the great running backs OU has had over the yrs Quentin Griffin is my favorite without a doubt. One of my all-time favorite players period. He was just a joy to watch. Little dude packed a punch.
@@stevenwillow2525 Yeah, the "what if" game. What if DeMond Parker had decided to stick around in '99? He would have been a beast under Stoops in that Leach offense and his draft stock would have sky rocketed. Most importantly, Q would have redshirted in '99 and would have been there in '03 and there's no doubt in my mind, we beat LSU with Q. Hands down. I was at that '03 OU/LSU game and it's the one loss that really stings. That and the 2017 UGA loss but I wasn't there for that one.
Quinten Griffin was one of the most under rated running backs of all time. It's to bad that the Denver Broncos didn't keep him. He may not be big, but he is tough, elusive, and agile. And in this game, he carried the offense on his shoulders when Hyble couldn't.
He was like Sproles a couple of years early. Or maybe Napoleon Kaufman, if anybody still remembers that name? I don't really care what he did or didn't do in Denver though, he was a terror while at Oklahoma.
This was one of my favorite OU/Texas games. It was where we really began to have a dominant run game again. (Part of me does miss the i formation from time to time.) But man, I always forget just how many times Hybl threw to the other team. It was crazy.
Watching Quentin Griffin run all over Texas in this game just makes me think 🤔 how in Quentin Freshman year he was REDSHIRTED but they had to pull him out of REDSHIRT because of all the injuries at Running Back.... What a difference he would have made if he had been around in 2004 Sugar Bowl for the National Championship VS LSU.
Even though my team lost, this was one of the most entertaining games I ever saw. Quentin Griffin was so frustrating to play against I think he had over 200 yards in this game.
No discredit to Hybl here, but the emergence of a strong running game didn't leave him as exposed as he was the previous year, helping take the burden off his shoulders after Jason White was lost for the season. The lack of a running game back in '01, added to the fact that OU was defending champion, put a kind of pressure on him that he was unable to bear.
Eddie Hixson your comment was 8 years ago but I don't care GOTTA LOVE THE 8 YEAR DOMINATION OF THE LONGHORNS. HOOK EM! (don't remember the dates of those eight years)
That was a good game! This is the game I want to see between these two teams not one team just constantly getting the points and the other just giving up.
As talented as Texas was back then, Oklahoma just always worked harder and wanted more (TX fan here). Matter of fact, that's usually how it is 90% of the time.
Uh, OU had its share of "talent" on those rosters as well. Including two Nagurski Award winners, an Outland Trophy winner, two Butkus winners, two Thorpe Award winners, and loads of 1st round NFL talent.
Hyble may have thrown 4 interceptions in this game, but everyone forgets that he was the QB that took the Sooners to a Rose Bowl and WON it! Yea, I know, a lot of that had to do with OU's defense and star players, but give the man some credit, he could throw and probably would have gotten better had he played a few more seasons.
"That trash was undefeated vs texas" One game in which he led the offense to 0 points and went 4-10 passing for 35 yards, and was benched for Jason White after playing barely more than a quarter. One game in which he threw 4 picks and was carried by the defense and running game.
So true, I literally could not agree more (I'm a TX fan too). And where does all of that want and hard work start? The coaching. If Texas and OU are coached up the same and during the game it's 50/50 split, Texas would win most of the time, but Bob Stoops is just that much more prepared than Mack in the beginning of October. If there was any year for Texas to win again, 2013 would be it, but if Bob Stoops comes out on top again (which I think he will), Mack will probably never beat Bob again.
After late first-half score, OU squib kicked and Texas got the ball, up 14-11, at the 50 with 3 seconds left. What do you do? You throw it in the end zone. What did Mack Brown do? Down the ball and go to half.
I love the comment in the description, that OU wins "...despite OU QB Nate Hybl." Hybl looked downright brilliant compared to Chris Simms. Well, okay maybe that's not quite true....but Hybl wasn't the "blue chip" that Simms was supposed to be, and Hybl looked at least AS GOOD as Simms did on this day. And since Texas couldn't respond to Griffin, the game was over long before OU even took the lead.
"and Hybl looked at least AS GOOD as Simms did on this day" Disagree. It's a wash at best - 4 picks vs 3 and all 4 of Hybls were on him (and he should have thrown a 5th but it was so bad that 2 UT defenders knocked the ball away from each other) and 1 of Simms' was a deflected ball that hit the receiver in the hands. The difference in this game was the running game, not the QBs. Stoops figured out that the Texas defense couldn't stop the draw to Quentin Griffin, meanwhile the OU defense shut down both Cedric Benson and Selvin Young. The Oklahoma DL and OL were dominant this game (and OL was an issue for Texas all year - they gave up 8 sacks to North Texas).
Nate Hyble didn't suck, he needed more work on reading the defense but he could throw pretty accurate. One thing I noticed watching this video is how uneasy he seems to be in the pocket. I guess he didn't trust his O-line. But however bad people might think Hyble was, Simms was GOD AWFUL!
@jydaflyest Way to be two years late on my reply. GG is terrible, but everyone here in Austin thought he was going to be phenomenal after that 09 NC game against Alabama. I expect Texas to win tomorrow though.
more national titles, more big 12 titles, more heismans, better qbs, better rbs, better wishbone, better coaches, more thorpe awards, more butkus, outlands, o briens, better defense, superman, etc. etc. etc. theres only 1. THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA! TUCK FEXAS!
59-40-5! OU SUCKS! This was good game, but Texas lost a top 5 showdown. 2008 similiar game except this time $5 Texas beat #1 OU. 05-09 4 of 5 FOR TEXAS.
