I totally agree with you. I think this might be the best floor routine in the history of female artistic gymnastics. The commentator says it all at the beginning... *Spring has arrived...* That's the feeling I get, with the birds singing - mixed with her beautiful choreography and difficult acrobatics.
@@vc23 Yes... he seemed to be very fond of her also. He predicted a great future for her. Sadly she couldn't pull through. Elena Shoushounova and Daniela Silivas were the two gymnasts who battled each other on their road to the 1988 Olympics and fascinated the spectators back then. Still this routine is one of the best floor routines in my opinion. Oksana will always be one of my favorite gymnasts. 😄
@@Boban1611 Definitely, one of mine too. The Soviets had so many beautiful gymnasts to choose from, I’m a big fan of Olessia Dudnik and Tatiana Groshkova Such a shame they didn’t make it to the olympics, Oksana in particular
She was amazing. I hum or whistle the melody sometimes during the day.... her routine and the way she performed it, is engraved into my mind. This routine might be my most favorite one - of all times.
That is so funny... I wanted to point that out just yesterday. I even started writing a line, but stopped then. It is great, that you recognized those emotions too. :)
She was really so cute... the music with the birds chirping in the beginning... I have never seen someone, coming close to this routine from Oksana in 1985. That was one of a kind!
She was like the Olga korbut of the 1980s with her smile deposition and timing with the bird music and the tumbling in this just amazing how precise she is. Too bad she never made it on the 1988 Olympic team not sure what the reason was, the Russians prefered Shusanova the bring home the medals more. Who knows.
She wasn't really in top form, even already at the '87 Worlds, her beam work had grown consistently tentative and wobbly, and she was also unlucky to fall off bars at the '88 USSR Cup after her handgrip broke off - unfortunately this competition served as Olympic trials, and she finished 8th AA, so she was given the alternate spot. She had also been the Soviet alternate at the 1984 "Alternate" Games, so technically she would have been a 2-time Olympic alternate...
As a competitive swimmer back in those days and not knowing very much about gymnastics this has to be 1 of my absolute favourite floor routines. Had it on vhs video and would watch many times.. my overall favourite gymnast was and always will be Svetlana Boginskaya
Svetlana was exceptional in the sport.... there has never been another one with her physics and charisma. I loved her floor routines, but she was really good at all four events. But I have to say, that still to this day I catch myself, whistling Oksana's floor music, during the day.... it might be my all time favourite floor routine also.
The commentator says: 0:08 "Last gymnast on floor is Oksana Omelianchik from the Soviet Union. And to be totally honest to you, dear viewers, the decision has been already made in favor of Elena Shoushounova. Oksana has a score of 9.900 - even a 10 wouldn't get her to the first place. But she needs 9.875 points to become second. And do you hear what's happening in the gymnasium? Spring has arrived... 1:09 Yes... Twisting somersault, punch front She has some temperament, the little one And if you ask me: I think she has the brightest future of all the gymnasts we have seen today 1:42 Beautiful double piked somersault Oksana Omelianchik, from Kiev in the Ukraine Even the audience, in the not sold out Skating Hall in Helsinki, are thrilled by this 15 year old gymnast from the Soviet Union - and you will definitely hear from her in future. 2:18 Yes - she even has to come back on to the podium Maybe a 10? It is only about the second place, but this spot she will achieve with her performance definitely. 2:40 The total triumph of the gymnasts from the Soviet Union, with a short intervention of Maxi Gnauck at the Uneven Bars, winning the title together with Shoushounova - has been completed. Yesterday they won the All Around - and today... this Europeans finishes with the third 10 overall, the 10 on Floor Exercise and the second place for Oksana Omelianchik."
@@leapjumpsoar8049 Yes.... in former times the All Around was also the qualifying round for the Event Finals and the girls took the score over as a prelim score into the Final Competition. Elena Shoushounova had a 9,975 in the All Around and scored a 9,975 in the Final Competition. This resulted in a score of 19,950 and the Gold Medal. Oksana Omelianchik had a 9,900 in the All Around and a 10,000 in the Final Competition which summed up to a 19,900 and the Silver Medal.
@@leapjumpsoar8049 You are welcome. 😊 This rule changed for the first time in 1989.... The gymnasts qualified for the Finals back then and started again from a Zero.... I liked the old system though, but I got used to it and it seemed fair to me. When it changed in 1989 I was still okay with the new rule, but I had a hard time accepting the scoring the way it is now. That's why I probably lost interest in 'modern' Artistic Gymnastics' and enjoy watching the epic battles from the past. 💚
This was the first artistic gymnastics championships I watched on television. The moment I saw her routine, I was mesmerized. It was so cute and original - so difficult and unique. Up to this day, I whistle the melody sometimes during the day. I have never forgotten her or her floor routine from 1985. I am so happy, that other people feel the same about her and her talent. 😍😋🥰😏💚
Oksana started a new trend back in 1985. This back and fourth series in her second tumbling pass was so unbelievable. Her connections at Uneven Bars and also her Balance Beam routine were outstanding.... Although I was always an Elena Shoushounova 'fanboy' 😅😉 I got to admit... Oksana was always close to my heart. Especially because of her cute Floor Exercise. It was so nice, with the birds chirping in the beginning... Maybe the best routine of all times!
These young ladies from the USSR didn't have easy lives by any means. However, one can see the pure joy on her face while she is performing this routine! That expression was real and wonderful to see! ❤
This was really a special moment! She was glowing from the inside and everybody enjoyed that moment. Not just the judges and the audience in the hall. Also the viewers back then, watching the competition on the television and now.... almost over 40 years later - I am still smiling when I watch this routine. I never had a comparable feeling, watching a Floor Exercise. Oksana is unique with this performance.
The whole atmosphere at the Europeans, with her performing this Floor routine in the Final was almost magical. She enjoyed herself so much and the judges went along with her. You are right.... really precious!
She's still electric. I wonder how she'd score by today's standard ...even through she performs two skills illegal by today's terms - the double run, and the full twisting Arabian dive roll.
She had so much fun obviously. I remember so many routines, especially the girls from the US - they almost had a face cramp (smiling) at the beginning and the end of a routine, greeting the judges. But you didn't see the enjoyment during their routine. Oksana was light hearted at this European Championship. Look at her Gold winning routine at the Balance Beam. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kaUvykiFPac.html It was just beautiful to watch her perform her exercises.
It's almost like there has never been another routine, that could be compared to this.... That's the way I feel at least. 😎🤩🙂😍 I still whistle the melody from time to time... almost 36 years later! Gosh.... 36 years....
This Floor routine was almost magic. I have never experienced another Floor Exercise being so enchanting. Oksana was almost an overload in cuteness back in 1985. 💚🥰😎😏💚
In the Women's Gymnastics the acrobatic elements with a sideward takeoff and / or landing into a roll was banned shortly after the Olympic Games 1992 in Barcelona. Elena Shoushounova from the USSR was famous for this skill. She performed it throughout her career.
I started listening a bit to the one German language singer I know 😂😂. Thus, here is me singing 🎶 😍: Ich werf die Bild an die Wand. En einem Scherbenmeer
Listen to Joel Brandenstein. A great singer with so many wonderful love songs... for example this one: Halt mich noch einmal fest (Hold me one more time) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sXD8UgG3-v0.html
@@thesovgc I had once a video on youtube... singing a Eurovision song from Ireland, but took it down. I am not "American Idol Material" either.... but singing is not about being a great singer or not. It is about the joy you feel, while doing it... or the pain... depends on what song you chose and what feelings you connect with the words.
I am not quite sure... but if it would be that way... then Shawn would have a similar glance like Oksana, before starting a routine - since Oksana was born first.... 😎🤣😏😁
Up to this day, I enjoy watching this routine and remember how I felt back then.... I still hum or whistle the melody from time to time.... almost 40 years later. It is such a joy to watch her perform!
