With all the perfectionists out there showing their skills on RU-vid, its nice to see someone who is just starting out and just going for it no matter what the people say..These videos have been a breath of fresh air after everything we see drummers do on RU-vid...Makes me very happy and I know that someday Ola will be a great drummer and hopefully he will be able to play drums on his next solo album... Side note - I am among only a handful of people who love the St. Anger snare..
People don’t understand what drums really sound like.. loved that snare sound on that album.. not on all songs or albums! Lol If you hit a metal snare drum … its gonna sound like this if you tune it with certain heads. It’s a chosen sound. It’s still being talked about!! Just like low to no bass on Justice. Geniuses doing genius things! Nothing like a stick in the spokes of a stack of know it alls!
It may not be a popular opinion, but I think St Anger has the most intense drumming in the whole Metallica discography since And Justice For All. Love it or hate it, Lars goes absolutely insane in some of these tracks.
St Anger is super flawed, but there's some really good stuff on there. Probably their heaviest, most raw album, it just needed an editor to trim the fat and a producer willing to say "no" to stuff like the snare.
@@peeledapples4176 St anger would have been good if metallica wouldn't have driven Bob rock insane on their previous records, he went from telling kirk with a straight face that his solo sucks, to a tired Yes-man.
TIP: Keep your little finger wrapped around the stick also when playing faster stuff. You'll have more stick control that way, and the sticks won't go flying quite as easily.
Try doing doubles holding sticks like that all day. Your other fingers help with the rebound. Not something I would recommend. And yeah bro I can actually play percussion.
@@R3TR0R4V3 not really. Go watch Baard Kolstad. He often has his pinky out. Other than the fact it looks ugly, it doesn't really matter, it actually means you have a loose grip. Yeah it's better not to I guess but it's not a big no no.
Say what you want about the album - too many copy & pasted parts, no solos, snare sound... all valid criticisms, but it also had a crap ton of awesome riffs on it.
I agree. and in time i learned these were valuable criticisms, but when this album came out. I was a rebellious, angry teenager, and regardless of the criticisms. i loved this album and still do.
True enough - the basics per song (writing, riffs, structure) are rock-solid. If they would re-record it with a different producer Fidelman (who did Hardwired) it would be an absolutely amazing album....
Yeah great riffs and everything but for me the only thing I'd critique is that the songs are too long and repetitive like the songs would be 8 minutes long but majority of the song is would be just copy and paste like if it was like Justice where there were a bunch of different riffs then I wouldn't mind
Just some friendly tips Ola: 1) Your arms seem to be too far extended when playing the hihat, try putting it a bit closer. The Toms seem far apart too ... try to layout the set that nothing is too far away to play comfortably. 2) Your sliding technique seems the wrong way around. As i learned it it is like this -> your leg comes up, your foot slides a bit back on the pedal creating the first kick. After that you let your leg fall down and the foot comes back to the original position creating the secons kick. What you DONT want is tapping your foot twice hence it kills efficiency. 3) Holding sticks is hand to explain, but try to find the spot where the balance point of the stick is and place your Indexfinger a bit below that it becomes tip heavier, but not too much but i guess its personal preference at that point. Try not to grip the strick tight. Thumb and index finger are just guiding the stick, the other fingers are "holding" on to it. As i said a bit hard to explain but maybe you get something out of that. Otherwise very cool to see you play drums! Keep the videos coming dude! I guess I have to learn guitar now O_o
Yeah Ola I have to also as a drummer agree here with these observations - they will deff prove problematic later - there is some really Fl great advice above me about some tricks to help you 👍🏻every impressive playing so soon after you began l🤘🏻💀🤘🏻
@@joemarta8221 sorry but thats simply not true. The technique is not useless for specific genres. The methods you describe are way more harder to learn and can be found often in metal but can also be used in other genres. Heel toe for example is used by my teacher a lot who is a jazzdrummer. Every technique has its use despite the genre.
Lars's drumming, as well as the band in general, has gotten a lot better live since he started playing to a click track. They're actually playing 'Sad But True' at the proper tempo now, after playing it way too goddamn fast for 30 years.
Nah, he's still dog shit. And I seriously doubt they're playing to a click, because the tempo inconsistencies are still there. Especially during performances of Fuel.
this song and this album in general has always been a "false" easy, so something easy on the ears and not that easy to play. Because of the sounds it always got a lot of hate but honestly is very honest. With a different snare and a different mix/sounds, it sounds brutal. And man, it's so nice to see you learning. Yeah, it's fun to see you struggle, but because we all fuckin' do and nobody really shows it online. So thanks Uncle Ola!
I'd say this song would be hard for a new drummer like Ola... but for anyone who is used to any amount of double kicks its not going to trip them up at all.
I love it when someone says "FUCK IT WE'LL DO IT LIVE" vs the perfectionism we normally see. The struggle is part of the journey, so Ola, fuck ya bad ass dude.
That was awesome. So many youtubers only show perfection, but as players we know the struggle. Dropping the stick? Man, that's authenticity. Thanks for taking us along on your drums journey, it's hugely inspiring!
Oh man loved it. Laughed so much at those few faster sections and how out of control you were just banging everything as fast as possible :D You'll get there! It's really fun watching you learn with that childlike enjoyment. Makes me want to buy a kit and start drumming too. Also you're right, as much as people love to give him shit, Lars has inspired a ton of people to pick up the sticks. His drumming in the recent post-covid shows has also been a lot stronger and they seem to be playing better than they have in the previous decade.
@@janitor6669 its such a boring, predictable thing. Like we know, you're not cool for pointing the same old stuff out for the millionth time. Every comment section: st anger snare, napster, selling out, wah, lulu. We know. Maybe move on.
As a long time Metallica fan who has paid thousands over the years to see them live, I feel entitled to shitting on Lars just a little bit. Yes, the man has written some amazing parts and is one of the most influential drummers ever. I love his music to death and adore his style and arrangements. But as a fan and frequent audience member, I find his laziness and unwillingness to learn his own damn parts kinda disrespectful towards not just us fans, but his own music. For example "One" has one of the most iconic double bass parts in music history, but when did Lars last play that part properly, let alone well? Dude is dreadful live, but doesn't give a fuck and makes little effort to improve. That deserves a bit of flak, in my mind.
I started drums at 14 in 1969 loved Mitch Mitchell, but Hendrix drew me to guitar, then back to drums when I heard Neil Peart, then back to guitar when I heard Eddie Van Halen. You have your guitar skills to keeping time very well. The first thing I learned to utilize drum rolling and stay in tempo was Iron Butterfly Inagadadavida. The very tricky part many drummers couldn't do was midway thru the solo, there is a single hi-hat(with left foot) while dbl kick pedal (right foot), like playing a fast dbl disco beat, while rolling tom toms all the way down to the bass drums. That's one way I learned to transition. Try it and you will loosen up a good workout and you'll be able to open up your drumming skills real fast. I still play Rock and Metal "Happy Holidays Ola!"
Love this, so many people shit on this album but it's a great album as are they all. We all have our favorites but honestly I really like Death Magnetic and Hard Wired also. Great job Ola, I can't get 4 limbs doing different things.
I like when you start to get a part down and you realize it and then a big smile comes across your face. Just genuine happiness. Also, ever since I started listening to slam and grindcore bands, this isn't the worst sounding snare I've heard.
I think the snare would work if they turned it down just a little... Ringy snare isn't a bad sound with the right mix... But the overall mix of the album is as trash as the can Lars was banging on
I believe they compressed too much that snare with harmonics and shit. If they were more gentle with it and cut out the harmonics, It would have been a more enjoyable mix. Hell, Chris Adler used the same freaking snare with LOG for years.
No, i think if the st.anger snare sound not like this will be like nu metal genre. So the trash can sound snare is fit perfectly for that album that to make it different with nu metal sound.
The snare gives this song its character. Overall on the album, i can surely bet it gets annoying. But i couldn't imagine the self titled song with a normal snare what so ever.
7:01 It's called skipping the pedal, where you hit once and it does a fast double stroke - you have to do it with a quick snapping motion. I remember when I was around 14 and finally learned how to do that. John Bonham was the master - he could even do triple strokes with a single motion on the pedal.
Thank you for being vulnerable, showing your learning process, and not just hitting record once you're perfect. That's a really hard thing to do. I should also say thanks for not shitting on that album, as is the custom for so many.
Keep going at it, it’s always just fun! One note of advice: put your headphones from “behind” your neck, so that the cord stays on your back and doesn’t touch your arm and leg.
I love watching your struggle as you are such an already accomplished musician. Inspires me to push through and continue my own journey. Keep it up, Ola!!
Hey man, here are my suggestions: Corrosion of Conformity - Clean My Wounds (nice to play, and not so hard), Biohazard - Urban Discipline (maybe a little tough for begginers, so maybe not now but later), Alice in Chains - Man in the Box (Because it's Alice in Chains and because it's Man in the Box :). It's been great to watch your journey as a begginer, you learn fast and keep us waiting for the next video. Doing great, congrats!
Dude your doing great in such a short period of time, playing drums is a great workout also.i love the St Anger album it's got some great guitar riffs 🤘🤘
@@xenonvinc popularity doesnt imply quality, but a lot of people including pro musicians and producers seem to think he did some great stuff on justice and tba
Ola - I can’t thank you for the years of time I start watching your channels rise and all your great content You are one of the best out there I always look forward to your videos - Being mainly a guitar player but also bass player and drummer as well as an engineer that actually doesn’t get hired by other bands Every now and again Anna Metallica fan for the scary long time let me just say play like Lars is very very hard it’s not because he’s very good necessarily Lars has lots and lots of character and lots of new ones that maybe he makes up for not being such a great technical drummer and that’s what he replaces it with but he has a fly pets like teaspoon of us it’s just very very different and very unique and if you try to do it the way he does he just won’t be able to whether you’re better or worse - Would help me on my cover versions of Metallica song so I played every instrument that are on my channel if you want to check them out try to kind of play with the posture and the vibe that Lars has when he’s behind the drum kit that almost arrogance and I’m willing to throw caution to the wind at times Try to play like you’re the biggest metal band ever was and did some of the greatest things in the entire genre of music OK the metal play drums like that and it doesn’t matter fear better than this guy better and that guy you are Lars Ulrich and that matters
I know you say that you struggle… but from an outward perspective, you’ve been coming along pretty well for the short time you’ve been learning. I’ve played for years and I still struggle with double bass. You’re better than me at double bass. Keep at it!! I love these vids!
Ola, the hihat is too far from you! you gotta bring it closer, you'll feel more confortable playing without stretching your arms! You're kicking ass, as always!
The double bass hit on a D beat can feel and works great if you start the double hit on the bass drum a hair late. The first hit a little late and the second right on the meter. Travis barker does this super well and it sounds more driving. Almost swings.
Celtic Frost 'Procreation of the Wicked' is one that people struggle with because it kind of goes in and out of time ... I have friends who have tried to cover songs from the Morbid Tales album and just gave up, they couldn't get the feel
Ola, please, please, PLEASE keep going. As a natural guitarist of 30 years and a (forced-to-be) drummer of 20 years, every step you have been going through has been what I went through to get where I am today. Your natural talent far exceeds mine, and to see you grow after being an accomplished (and influential) guitarist to become a formidable drummer is something I can't wait to see. Remember, as with guitar, it is 10% mental memory, and 90% muscle memory. Skål!!
Great job, dude! You're really coming along quickly and it's easy to see you're having an absolute blast. 😎 The only thing lacking really, was those crash cymbal accents during the chorus, but otherwise, _not fucking bad at all_ for only playing it a couple times thru. Impressive. You'll have it nailed in no time! 👍 BTW, try heel up on the double kick.. That might work better for you. That's how I play anyway. Bottom line, just experiment and try different techniques, then go with what feels right.
Ola, that was awesome man. If you didn't know, that snare sound came from disconnecting the wires/springs on the bottom of Lars Snare, essentially making it another tom, but with a higher pitch, along with a cracking sound because he uses a metal snare, which makes it louder. That was killer Ola!🤘🏻🤘🏻If I was to recommend a song for you to learn off the top of my head, "You Can't Fill My Shadow" by All That Remains, that's a killer song. Take Care Ola, keep kicking ass man.🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@skatterpro Yeah. Bob Rock really fucked up the mix in what is an immensely heavy album, full of awesome mean, fast and angry riffs, and lyrics that came from a deeper place from James, than what he had ever written before. I hear ya man.
It’s funny though how that album was platinum a number one want to Grammy & LARS still had every single one of you Just repeat this over and over again and threats to the point where the people doing it in comments become the meme I don’t think you get it he also had the drum sound of the black album for the best drum sound ever with the same producer it’s not like he could not of made that sound again if you wanted to he made a difference in the way people talk about For the past 16 years Who do you think actually A lifetime for a band if not three then ask yourself is Lars the type of person to do that for us to have us talking about a drum sound? Yeah yeah you bet he is so careful who you think is having a the last laugh
I really like how much fun you having improoving your skills daily. But please work on the ergonimics of your setup, you making it yourself way harder then it have to be. Move the Hithat closer to the snare for example. keep it up
i have never seen such an advanced beginner haha it looks like ola knows exactly how he needs to play it in his head and is thinking like a drummer that played for several years , but the muscle memory just isnt there yet
st angers snare sound is one of the best and distinctive sounds ever. But you have to be a metal snobhead to hate it. Really love the raw energy of the song and it wouldnt be anywhere near with different snare sound.
You're not supposed to hit every hi-hat note with the same intensity, the 'upbeats' are hit weaker when your hand is going up in the rebound to the next 'downbeat'.
Now I want to see a Metallica with Haunted/Feared tour, where Ola plays drums on St. Anger and Lars plays on like... All Against All. Plot twist: James and Lars sign with Solar.
Ola you did so good 👏👏👏 I started guitar a few months ago and it makes me feel a lot better to see someone struggling with a new instrument lol, makes it feel easier to achieve. Across the board I love your music and videos, keep it up and happy holidays 💚💚💚
