Olatunji is a Trinidadian. He is a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago is a Caribbean island. The genre of music he is singing is called Soca music in Trinidad and Tobago. Soca music first started in Trinidad and Tobago by fusing African drums and rhythms with East Indian drums and rhythms. Soca music has evolved over the years to what is its present sound. We in the caribbean have African, East Indian, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Syrian and English ancestry. We are of many different races. We have different cultures, music, food, religions etc. We have a two day street parade in which hundreds of thousands of people parade in costumes and dance to soca music and steelpan or steel drum music. The steel pan or steel drum was also invented in Trinidad and Tobago. It is actually our national instrument. So it is a fair and innocent to assume that Olatunji is a Nigerian because of his African name, his African ancestry and because soca music sounds similar to Nigerian music. It sounds similar because some of our ancestors came from the Mother Land, Africa, hundreds of years ago during slavery. Let us celebrate the long journey this genre has made and just enjoy and appreciate this feel-good music of love, peace, joy and good vibes.

well thats half right. Caribbean people are displaced PEOPLE. half trinidad is indian and the other half that are african about a quarter are mixed with many other races. cant claim one without the other which is why many of us say we are trini first. as a dougla i am just as much afrian as my mom, as i am indian like my dad. where then was i displaced from? i love both cultures but they are not mines to claim exclusively. i am born a Trini. soca is Trini so i claim that my culture as we know it isnt just african based. maybe this one song but definitely not the entire genre

+Aminta Seye Almost EVERY musical genre from the North/central/south america that gets your hips moving has African origins. Salsa, Bachatta, Merengue, Soca, Reggae, Dancehall. No matter the language differences they all have HEAVY african influences. Anyone who argues that fact are in denial of that fundemental fact.

Ladies and gentlemen, the purpose of the comments section is to say whatever you want regarding the video. You can say good and you can say bad...you have that right to do so. People, please understand this and try not to create a silly battle of words over a song, which is supposed to have the sole purpose of radiating the complete opposite vibe. Individuals are meant to have their own opinion. Individualism is something that some say the West Indies lacks. Don't prove that correct.

Reading all these comments with people fighting back and forth as to the origin of the artist. The problem lies with black people always fighting against each other and tracing our roots shows we are all from the same place. We maybe from a different Island/country and possess different cultures and views but we are all the same. No one is more superior than the other, and we should be celebrating and accepting each other's culture. Just enjoy the song and pass the bullshit already! Get a grip!

This song is a hybrid. I'm Trini and I love soca, reggae, and african music. All genre of caribbean music, much like food, have roots in Africa. This connection is all we have left of our heritage, family, and legacy that were stolen from us. Let us embrace this type of music as a glue to help us feel connected to one another. It hurts me when I think of the family I lost and never had a chance to know hundreds of years ago. Who knows, some of us on this thread may even be related.

This song is the best!! Anyone who truly appreciates music and the artists who create and perform these songs, will know that there are no borders, cultures, race or any other differences that defines this music. It's meant for all to enjoy, and anyone who seeks to differentiate it is simply ignorant. :)

I love it...we are true to our music it's original, not borrowed or on loan from anywhere else. With that said the beats and instruments can cause anyone to be confused, soca, hip-hop and several other styles of music does incorporate that african influence but this brother is 100% Trinidian. We are very proud of him!

It is just foolish to argue this. Don't you all realize that we were once together walking and talking with each other in Africa before what we call slavery? We had the same culture: music, way of life, dances etc and up to this day some of us African people of the Caribbean cannot realize that we sing the same music with the same sound as the the Africans in Africa do. You can never forget who you are, somewhere in you all lies information ready to be accessed. By this African native realizing similarities in our music shows that even the African natives are realizing that the diaspora still have that connection to home.
@nelsonmandela9367
@nelsonmandela9367 9 лет назад
Fuck Africa. We have the most resources in the world yet we are the poorest people most uneducated. Most genocide. Africans sold Africans into slavery. Read and observe then talk. The Caribbean people have nothing to do with Africa, don't think like Africans or live like them. The roots you so proudly talk of are non existent. Have you ever seen genocide in the Caribbean? I am a Somalian by the way. I have lived in the Caribbean. I know and have seen both sides of the culture and let me tell you something. Dont talk bullshit you know nothing about

If you cannot construct your sentances in such a way that we can understand fully what you are saying then shut up. Don' t comment at all. By the way what you said was www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=www.borishoppek.de/picture/shit-maker%2525209.jpg%253FpictureId%253D10908668&imgrefurl=www.borishoppek.de/exhibition-and-event-listing/shitmaker-fame-festival-2011/10908668&h=1200&w=800&tbnid=6EylEhRL3AOEFM:&zoom=1&docid=5VlCAtqMA-l_PM&hl=en-US&ei=9NGRVLu5DLiSsQT6qIGoBQ&tbm=isch&client=ms-unknown&ved=0CCQQMygBMAE ( too too) and if you cannot understand this conversation now thats okay maybe when you get older you will understand, have a nice day.

You are a joker, walking and talking to each other? More like fighting wars and being sold for riched. Even in African among different countries and different ethnic groups, the culture is not the same. No, the Caribbean and Africa do not have the same songs nor the same music.

All this race talk under such a beautiful song? Olatunji is a TRINBAGONIAN. I don't know about the rest of you but I first identify myself as a Trini. Everything else (race, "class" etc) are only secondary/unimportant.
@TheonDaisley

Nothing is wrong with identifying with your race, Race is not "unimportant" and Race and Nationality are two completely different things and shouldnt be compared.

What de hell is a TRINBAGONIAN? ONE IS EITHER tRINIDADIAN OR TOBAGONIAN, one can't be both. It is one country but two beautiful islands, each island with its own distinctive culture and history.
