Epic showdown between Bette Davis and Miriam Hopkins. When the day came to shoot the scene, the set was mobbed with on-lookers, eager to see the fur fly. But when Davis went to shake her, Hopkins went limp, flopping around like a rag doll. Sherman explained that she needed to offer some resistance or the scene would get laughs. But each time they re-took it, Hopkins just went limp again until Davis walked off the set in disgust. Finally, Sherman got his stars back together and managed to get a few shots he could edit together.

Bette Davis despised Miriam Hopkins. She said many years later that Miriam Hopkins and Faye Dunaway were the two most unprofessional people she'd worked with.
@stevenzumbrun6105
@stevenzumbrun6105 3 года назад
In her bio, Davis was fairly good natured about Hopkins. She said she got along with Hopkins fine socially. Professionally, she was just resigned to the fact that Hopkins would try to steal the scene any way she could. Davis--"I can get a scene across with my back, if necessary, and with Miriam it often was necessary."

They way Bette is starring at her is priceless! I especially love the slight look up and down she gave her. Too funny! Everyone during that time KNEW these 2 HATED each other! Bette stated later on Dick Cavett, after Miriam Hopkins passed away, that she always respected her acting talents, but that she was very immature and extremely jealous of Davis' success and standing in Hollywood. Even to this day, Bette's performances jump off the screen! A GIANT, she was!

Bette's fame is slowly fading away these days. I think it has something to do with the decline of TV and channels like TCM as well as the younger generation's disinterest in anything "old".

Classic movie that I love rewatching! It is amazing how a "friend" of decades could so quickly believe info without facts or evidence. Stuff still happens today. I know I could not have kept her as a friend, much less pour her a glass of champagne forgiveness....puhlease! This is why keeping to oneself without investing in another person's heart and soul is most often the healthiest decision.

That is true. They were both fighting for the same roles at Warner. Miriam was supposed to do Jezebel. She even brought the rights for it. Warner forced her to sell the rights with the promise to cast her and then rejected her and cast Bette which eventually won her the second oscar. So, yeah it's true.

@@raymonddaniel8247 Fair enough. I guess I misunderstood you. Some of the other responses here seemed as though Bette Davis is the legend, not Miriam Hopkins. Yes, it may be true here that Davis is better remembered than Hopkins, but Hopkins was her equal as far as acting brilliance, in my opinion. I really wonder if any of these other people here who build up Davis over Hopkins even have seen Miriam Hopkins in many of her movies.
