Old But Cool Vintage Audio / TASCAM Cassette Deck 122MK III 

This deck is a work of art and the way, you operate it, is artistry.

I own 4 Tascam 122mk3, as well as 2 Onkyo 2570 and 1 CR7 Nakamichi. Mechanically, the Tascam have a more solid construction, all aluminum, intended for intensive bradcast use, the others deck are far from it. There are 11 trimmers on the pcb (+ 2 for the oscillos) which allow you to adjust to make this device sound in an incredible way. Of all my devices, I have to admit that the Tascams sound wonderful, although the others are very good too! In addition, these devices are very well designed and easy to repair.

GREAT music brother ... at last exciting big band jazz ... serious dynamics. Classical’s good too! Just had my original “mk” 122 refurbished in time for Xmas just gone. It won’t suffer “crap” stock .. it’s a pro machine 4 serious mixdowns in the studio or lucky beggars like us audiophiles .. use good stock. I see Tascam’s running a limited release of newly formulated cassette stock .. especially 2 run on vintage cassette-based Portastudios .. like my 246 machine .. oh joy!

Très bon magnéto, très fiable et si besoin, facilement réparable. Le son monitoring est quasiment identique au signal d'entré, avec bien sûr la coloration de la bande utilisée. Il est possible avec un bon casque de studio, d'améliorer le son de cette machine en agissant sur les trimmer du pcb mais attention à ne pas toucher aux gains d'entrée et de sortie ni aux vu-mètres.....J'ai réglé moi même mes 3 appareils et je peux vous dire que c'est bluffant, car les réglages d'usine peuvent bouger....Je possède un Zx9 pour comparer et avoir une référence, mais chaque machine à un son qui lui est personnel. J'ai eu le Mk2, mais je préfère le Mk3 ! Very good deck, very reliable and if necessary, easily repairable. The sound monitoring is almost identical to the input signal, with of course the touch sound of the tape used. It is possible with a good studio headphone, to set the sound of this machine by with trimmers o the pcb but be careful, don't touch the input and output gains or the vu-meters .....I 've set himself my 3 deck and I can tell you that it is amazing because the factory settings can change. I have a Zx9 to compare and have a référence, but each machine has its own personal sound. I had the Mk2, but I prefer the Mk3.

The MK 2 is the one you see people wax lyrical about on forums and the MK 3 is dismissed as a cheap iteration (probably because it was made in Taiwan). However, I read a comment by a Broadcast engineer recently and in his professsional experience he mentioned the superior transport of the MK 3 and that is why recording studios and radio stations preferred them. They sound superb and work beautifully.

I have a question about levels too. On some tapes (for example SAEHAN and SAMSUMG) I only have -3 VU maximum level, so on that tapes Dolby B is not working properly due to wrong maximum level. I have the second unit and it behaviors pretty the same. My question is: is it possible to give this mashine additional levels (say... +5dx extra) at the front panel level adjustment for compensating level losses with some tapes? Because if I can't get 0vu, I can't use Dolby B - it will not work properly.

Hello! I have the same deck, and I love it. But I'm still learning how to set it correctly. Could you answer a few questions? 1 - Why you left the adjust button on while recording? 2 - Is there a problem when VU led indicates clipping while in "input" mode? I'm still confused if I should be aware of clipping when in "input" mode or "auto" mode.

Thanks for the video. My deck responds to the oscillators differently. R channel won't go beyond -3db in bias or rec even I to adjust it in full limits. Do I need to recalibrate from inside? TIA
