Welcome back to Lift Arc Studios! This week we have longer video to share with you all that's a little different than our normal projects! Tay recently bought an old fiberglass canoe from a local consignment shop. It was a great deal, but it also came with a lot of damage and a lot of problems! So in order to get this thing back on the water before the summer ends, Tay and his girlfriend Courtney team up to patch it up and make it pretty!
This episode is quite a bit longer than our normal videos so it doesn't have as much of the fancy editing, but we still hope you watch it all the way through to see just how well it turned out! Have you ever done any work on boats / watercraft? How do you think we did on this restoration? Let us know in the comments down below!
Thanks for watching!

Just going back through the archives. This is a nice departure from Lift Arc machine and fabrication work. The addition of an additional face makes it all the better.

Try cutting the cloth on the bias next time you are doing bow and stern keel strips. It will lay down much easier and it will not fray or spread strands then.

Sorry, can you explain that to someone who is a new to this?
@Thestripper1
@Thestripper1 2 месяца назад
@@jonathankr Cutting glassfiber strips from the roll, the first inclination is to simply cut off a strip as wide as you want it and then glass it on your canoe. However, If you look at the fiber direction of the cloth you will se that some strands run lengthwise of the fabric and others run across. So if you simply cut off a strip from that you will be left with a strip that has fibers running lengthwise and across. If instead, you first cut off your cloth at a 45 degree angle and then cut you strips from that new 45 degree edge. You will then get strips that have fibers running in 45 degrees in relation to your strips length direction. This type of strip is called Bias cut strip and they will conform over shapes and stay down a lot easier. Puh... I hope that made sense.

Ya... I used to glam up my canoes like this too. Here are suggestions for doing it better that I learned the hard way: 1. fill holes, dents, nicks with marine putty and sand before applying fiberglass and resin. 2. Only use marine grade resin like West System. Don't use automotive resin like Bondo that you get at the hardware store. The automotive grade stuff yellows, gets brittle, and will eventually release from the repaired area. 3. Paint the boat the same color as the original. Eventually, the new paint will get worn and scratched and show the original color and look awful.

Nice job. Fiberglass is wonderful stuff. I fixes a lot of problems and covers lots of problems. I would have sprayed the inside flat gray if it were mine though.

The fiberglass cloth you used is called just that...fiberglass cloth. The other that you did not use is called matting. Matting is used for strength and is then covered with the cloth.
@GotrekGurninsson

It’s used for bulk more the strength the woven cloth is stronger
