Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band, founded in 2002 by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever (Floor Jansens band). Formed as a symphonic metal band with gothic tendencies, later Epica have incorporated into their sound strong death metal influences. In addition, the band often uses thrash metal and groove metal riffs, black metal passages (mostly in the drum technique), power metal moments and references to Arabic music. Simone Simons has an incredible voice. I love how the growl and simone's vocals kinda adds to the recurring theme of their lyrics, like duality, polar opposites and trying to find balance in between. I guess we can say that they found the balance between growl and clean in the band.

@@darthmarr9886 Not much more. Most "symphonic metal" bands are not really symphonic. Adding either a piano or strings to metal does not make it symphonic. I didn't like growling at all until I heard Epica for the first time. To me, growling is kind of like hot sauce - if you put a little bit in your chili, it spices things up really nicely, but you don't drink straight from the bottle, and you don't pour the whole bottle into your chili. Epica does the hot sauce just right - the juxtaposition between the growling and Simone's beautiful soprano is just wonderful. I've grown to like other growly bands, but Epica was the first for me that opened up this world.

@@luxetveritas9196 yes he knows, he must be talking about the Elizabeth trilogy. Although as amazing as the live version is to see, I think the studio version really takes you away to a different place, and also in the live version Thomas gets lazy and doesn't play that amazing riff properly in part 3. not to mention the fact that the 2nd guitar parts are missing live since there is only 1 guitarist.

There are many BTS videos of the process Epica uses to create and produce their music, and every member is very involved in everything that goes into making a CD. In addition, Epica is adept at all aspects of the music business, making videos, interviews, tours, etc, and they make the most of it. Add in the fact that they are all best friends, and there are no inflated egos fighting for the spotlight, and you can see how they've managed to stay together for nearly 20yrs, and create music that profoundly touches the heart and soul.

You must watch the live work of Ayreon the guy behind the hammond and a bunch of keyboards is the arranger and recording tech of this album. Now works with Floor Janssen on a new album. Mark Janssen (not related) was the main composer but this album the whole band participated. And it is their newest album its been out 8 weeks. Funny that Joost van den Broek, Mark Janssen and Floor all originated from After Forever. I must listen back some more of that because there were a bunch of diamonds in the rough in that band.

Metallica S&M was the album that opened my eyes to what metal could be. Discovered Apocalyptica shortly after, Nightwish and Leaves' Eyes a few years later, then Epica, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Opeth, etc. Down the rabbit hole I went. I was raised on classical (i.e., Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and the like) and I've always loved rock and metal, and this was to my young ears pure aural ecstasy. That one album changed my life. On a related note, it kind of forever ruined garage bands for me, lol.

@@KeyOfGeebz Hello and welcome to the world of Epica! :) Please, pay attention to this post! Epica is not just "some symphonic metal band", Epica is literally a top-notch symphonic metal, alongside Nightwish and Therion. Google any website for "top 10 symphonic metal bands" and Epica will be there, usually in the top 3 or top 4. I'm glad you reacted to "The Skeleton Key" from their latest album Omega (Feb 2021) BUT that is more radio-friendly song (typica verse-chorus-verse structure). You really need to react to some of their great masterpieces that use a lot of orchestral sound. Since you are a composer, I would recommend "The Phantom Agony" from their debut album (2003) of the same name: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G1YTu54A69w.html - please, use exactly THIS link as it is a HD version. The last 3 minutes of the song is pure orchestral sound, no electric instruments, I think you will really like it. Simone Simons (the gorgeous redhead lead singer) was only about 19 years old here (she's 35/36 in The Skeleton Key) and her technique has changed quite a lot, but I personally love her young voice. Here is one of their breathtaking ballads "Once Upon a Nightmare" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pNs_pMdZGrw.html It starts off almost like a movie score. Not very complicated composition but it's really beautiful. The spoken male voice reads parts of the poem Erlkonig (Alder-king) by Goethe. If you'd like to hear their (probably) magnum opus and if you don't mind some heavier parts, try "Kingdom of Heaven". The song has 5 movements, 13 minutes in total: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hFlgT4dny4k.html Epica also make acoustic versions of some of their songs which are really wonderful, such as Feint: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FNTaIz5cABY.html If you reacted to just these four songs, it would make me happy :) Some other suggestions may come later. Thanks Geebz for an awesome reaction to one of my favorite bands! So my fellow Epica fans have done a great job already of giving you all of the must hear tracks from this band. With that in mind I mainly want to focus on a less popular track that I feel is one of the best intros to the band’s uptempo side. You got a good taste of their medium tempo side with this song that you did,”The Skeleton Key”. The song “Edge Of The Blade” from their Album “The Holograhic Principle” combines a blazing fast tempo, a killer main guitar riff, and a catchy chorus. It’s also in my opinion one of their most uplifting high tempo tunes. For me it’s the kind of song that leaves me with that “I can conquer the world now!” kind of feeling. Anyway I hope you’ll get a chance to check it out. Thank you very much as always and keep up the good work! Here’s the official video pink: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4Cb91iAD-nY.html

Geeeeeeeeeeebz! More newness!!! Sweet! There's nothing that could've prepared me for this! Damn. I love the contrast of feelings in this whole track. Very operatic indeed! When you stopped going into the solo... my eye popped out a little bit! Lol!!! Fun listen! Thanks brother!

Eyyyyy, Epica! Yes, I remember listening to them sooo much growing up, a good two or three albums being stand outs! To anyone reading this, definitely search this for yourselves too, you won't be disappointed, trust, especially you Opeth fans! Definitely gonna get to this one, but also just leaving my regular request of Wilderun: The Unimaginable Zero Summer for a teaser! You'll notice the cliffhanger at the end, but maybe it'll you'll be curious to see what the following track is since it is only the first track....Or if you want to get into the nitty gritty, Tyranny of Imagination! Definite Opeth vibes, I know you'll be in for a ride, along with dissecting the amazing production and creative choices, especially the ending of Tyranny! Interested in hearing other's impressions, anyone leave thoughts below!

If you want to watch some really good sample of what Epica has to offer, go watch Retrospect ( a show live to celebrate their 10 year anniversaries) on stage with the band ther is a full orchestra and choir, and a lot of epicness and pyrotechnic:) have a great one :)

Finally! So happy that you decided to delve into epica. That being said, as much as skeleton key is a good song, it is nothing compared to some of their MANY magnum opuses. I beg you to listen to any of the following. They have more nuanced melodies and structures, changes between compressed and decompressed sounds, parts that are riff driven or keys driven or symphony driven, all within the same songs themselves. And a definitive touch of prog!! -The Phantom Agony live retrospect -Consign to Oblivion live in Zenith -Obsessive Devotion official live -The divine conspiracy live retrospect -Design your Universe live retrospect -Kingdom of heaven (part 1,2 or 3 with a preference on 1) live mexico -Serenade of self destruction live retrospect -The Holographic Principle (A profound understanding of reality) -Omega (Sovereign of the sun spheres)

Hello from France, you should try Therion (historic : one of the first symphonic band in Europe 1987 !), I really love the Live Gothic 2007 - with Lori and Katarina (wondefull singers)- PLease listen to those 4 songs : Der Mitternachtslöwe - Schwarzalbenheim - Son of the staves of time - Perennial Sophia ( this last one is my favourite). they've also played with symphonic orchestra in the Miskolc fest in Hungary. very interesting Then you should also try Sirenia The Other Side / Lacuna Coil : Senzafine (in italian).. have a great day !

Thanks for your reaction - I indeed waited for some Epica reaching you and I'd say it goes well hand in hand with the Nightwish-Universe! :D So great to see you expand into that big space aswell! I would clearly vote for "Consign to oblivion" - the live at Zenith (Paris) version ... it's a ridiculous great show-finisher. For having a full symphonic experience surely the live-retrospect-songs recommended several times are a greaaaaat dive! (meet Floor Jansen there aswell having an appereance :D )

@@Spitx OK, enjoy ;) And btw, do you know acoustic versions of their old songs? It's not metal, so you are not diving into the genre :) but those songs are damn beautiful. For example: Feint - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FNTaIz5cABY.html Martyr of the Free Word - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nV5SCcrAxC0.html In the first video, Simone was only around 19 years old. @@cancelled_user can totally relate to feint but not this version, pretty incredible and beautiful arrangement. It's now much easier to find music and titles I've once heard and explore deeper. I've never went digging deeper into Epica {just occasional listening so far, compared to other bands I listen more to} but I guess it's time for me to start doing it. I heard the best vibes from the best of Therion here. Here we go... I named them. I need, we need... you need to do your thing with Therion, Christofer Johnsson's music project. "Theli", "Vovin", "Deggial"... "The Secret Of The Runes" {the very best of the best, for me, from them!} up to the last one, "Leviathan"... the list of albums is so huge and important that every single piece is relevant like the others, for me. Christofer Jonsson is The Goat, the Godfather of the symphonic-operatic-orchestral-theatrical {definitions wouldn't be narrower when if comes to define Therion's} genre. A Must Have To Listen To!!! PS: Sorry Epica Army, I just had to took the chance to shift there into that direction, just for a moment.
