Blasphemy I know but Tati feels too... Trashy, to me? The lyrics, the way she carries herself, some of the dumb shit she's worn to concerts, I dunno. Maybe the fact she's so aggressively hyped by the general community just sours me innately- I have the same thing with Nightwish where I just want to hate that band because everyone's so fucking pushy about how they're literally god incarnate or whatever. Roman's guitar tone here is a Peavey 6505 set with low distortion with gobs of boost before the amp from his Helix. It's impossible to tell what he has set in the Helix, but it's some kind of tube screamer overdrive and maybe a clean boost that carry those mids through and tighten the low end. You slam the front of the amp with mids and cut some of them out after the pre-amp with an EQ to get that djenty tone. Live, he mixes in impulse responses, not sure if he uses them in the studio.

@@dlach3139 Here, Roman talks about his setup ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eWhvEQVnC3k.html. I can get a similar-ish sound on my rig doing something kinda like he does without the impulse responses. I use a clean boost, an overdrive set as clean boost, and an overdrive with slight distortion going into my mildly overdriven Randall RT100. The overdrives and boost give an insane amount of mids, but that carries that low A tuning nicely through the pre-amp and tightens the low end removing any flub. The key is to shape the sound with a 7 or 8 band EQ in the loop to remove a lot of the added mids and get just the right amount of low end. The EQ does most of the sound shaping. Here's this in action ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4JGObtP-JQ0.html

To answer your question at the end of the video, I think the first "growling" in music can probably be coined to old blues players. If you think about it, the Beatles even had some pretty raspy vocals in their songs. (Twist and Shout for example) obviously not like modern day growls but like you said, it all evolves. The main band coined with being the first to growl is just called "Death" from the 80s/90s. I believe that's why the term is called "death growl" sometimes but I'm not sure on that.

Someone already mentioned a lot of what is going on with his guitar tone, what I can tell you from my experience, the bass is cranked down, which is common with an extended range guitar, They tune frequently to A and Ab, on a 7 string. When you're tuned that low, you usually dial back the bass on the tone stack, it's going to be very bassy regardless. If you don't wind it back it goes straight to being mud. There's definitely a screamer or similar pedal to tone shape, which also tends to roll off a bit more of the low end. and I'd go as far to say even though the fundamental on the guitar is below 60 hz, that they have a highpass around 100hz, so what you're hearing is actually the harmonic series of the low notes rather than the low note themselves (because the first harmonic is an octave higher than the fundamental) this is a very common way to get a very low guitar signal sounding clearer and punchier. but the tone stack if we use a 4 band tone stack, bass is dialed back, low mids slightly rolled off, hi mids are very present, and treble is slightly boosted. The high mids are the body of the ticky sound you get in Djent. The low mids can be muddy and do weird things so you kind of pull them out a bit. Source: I play 7 string guitars through a peavey 6505 lol He has a helix going into his, I'm slamming mine with an old tube screamer, and then a clean boost after to absolutely slam the preamp section of the amp. Admittedly his tone is cleaner than mine. However speaking from experience that's the route that's going on there. Sidenote, 7 strings don't get enough love. They are becoming popular in metal, but damn if that guitar hasn't proven to be amazing for jazzy and bluesy stuff, and it's an absolute monster for playing ambient styles. Also I know this has gotten to be long comment, But I wanted to say respect for giving their bassist some love, he's incredible. Everyone always overlooks the bassists. Coming from a rhythm guitarist, they are 2/3 of my guitar tone. A great bassist will make or break a bands sound. If the bassist is doing his job well, everything in the track sounds bigger, better and richer. A lot of time though that means they get overlooked. So Thank you for taking a moment and showing the bass some love there.

Are you ready for this? That chorus is straight 4/4. It's just that they play with the accents so much, and the pauses. What I love about it is that the vocals tie it together rhythmically. If you hear the song without the vocals, you find yourself going "Man how would I sing over that?! How the hell did she do that?" It's often the case with their music. The guys write all the music before it gets to Tati for vocals and lyrics. I'm often dumbfounded by how she can find a vocal part that makes any sense over those crazy riffs and time changes. And yet, it's often her voice that is the unifying factor, the catalyst that brings it all together. These guys, like Rush, can make a 13/8 time signature sound natural. They can make you headbang to odd meters. That's a rare talent. They can also make it sound disjointed and disorienting when they want to. Just tools in the toolbox for them. They're like master painters or sculptors who use all the colors, techniques, and tools in the kit. It's beautiful!

According to you it's impolite. But most people dislike hearing praises about one's own person, and would rather prefer a sense of connection and kinship with peers. Not saying Geebz is like that, but most people are. We all love music, and we want to share what we love with each other, and that's wonderful. Suggesting a song that you love can also be very personal because in a way we're sharing a piece of ourselves. There is nothing impolite about it, even though I agree, some may come across as merely demanding but I doubt that's the real intent. This is RU-vid after all, it's what you make of it.

Roman's guitar tone is actually pretty simple surprisingly enough. He uses an EVH 5150 III amplifier, everything's set slightly above middle (set on 6's if I remember correctly from the last couple shows I saw them on). He has a Line 6 Helix to help switch and add a few effects for his cleans, but all of the distortion and such is pretty straightforward. Bands like Gojira and Trivium use a similar tone for their main overdriven tone (Jinjer just tunes down to drop A).

Edit: Regarding the history of growling, there is mention of “growling” and ugly vocalizations in historical accounts of Scandinavian music when other cultures would deal with the Norsemen who went viking (fun fact, viking is a verb as it was a side activity for income supplement, NOT a dedicated lifestyle or class of people). There are also the vocalizations in Haka from the Maori people of New Zealand. As for its use in popular music, The Who’s “Boris the Spider” is often seen as the first ever use of a death growl, back in 1966! Congrats on 100k, Geebz! Was wondering when you’d get to this one :) “Home Back” next in the Jinjer list? Aloha geebz, and Congrats on 100k subs! My 1st listen to Jinjer was your reaction to Pisces just 2 days ago. Now I'm fan! Really enjoying this journey. I get way fewer commercials on Roku than on phone/tablet. The rewind trick seems to work well (go to the end, then slide back to the beginning). Many thanks to whomever shared this tip in a comment somewhere. Very helpful!

You're an enjoyment to watch and listen to, sir, cause it's so obvious that you love and process music and let it filter through your veins :).

You know Geebz was really into the composition when he didn't even notice the cat. LOL

Check out Bad Water for a nearly completely clean vocal performance. Additionally, Who Will Be The One is nearly all growl. So much good Jinjer. They have a new great video out for Home Back as well.

Just binged all of your Jinjer reactions up this point. Hope to see more! Great reactions. If you need suggestions may I recommend a few? "Outlander", "Cloud Factory official live video", "Retrospection" and "On the Top live in Kiev" would be some to check out if they're not already on your list.

The mongolian have been doing growling in traditional tribal music for centuries. They usually growl into specific harmonics and do group growls to create a droning sound that's amazing. The mongolian band The wu uses some of that but it's very diluted in comparision.

Wow. She's AMAZING. I feel enlightened by your comment comparing the role of bass in reggae being akin in in importance to the power guitar riffs in metal. Makes me want to listen to reggae. Would love to watch you break down some reggae tunes!

The first growler in music was John Entwistle with The Who in 1966

Nice, glad you did this version. Showed kids this recently, boy was amazed (but has heard female growling so not surprised) 4 year old girl got fierce for a while. 🤣 🤟🏻✌🏻

Before she lost her IG account, Tatiana would post videos of herself singing karaoke. She can vocally match any pop star you’d want to put up against her.

Awesome! How to not love this woman, she has it all, the cleans, the growls, the fry screams and she looks stunning! On top of that she loves cats :D If you are looking for other artists with incredible vocal range check out: Dir En Grey - Vinushka.

You've amassed 100 thousand subscribers in 3 months. People obviously dig what you do, so keep having fun and at this rate, RU-vid will have to take notice. Much love, my man. Also, "Scoop the mids" is basically step one for beginner metal guitar tone.

By the way, if check out the band Death, Chuck Schuldiner is essentially the pioneer of screaming/growling. And once you're back from that rabbit hole, Deathcore has some of the most innovative vocalists out there. I would personally recommend Slaughter to Prevail (Alex is literally a beast), anything by Dickie Allen, and Whitechapel.

Realize this video is two years old, but if you want to check out some good reggae bands. Rebelution, Iration, Stick Figure, Slightly Stoopid are good bands to check out if you haven't! JINJER IS AMAZING! Love the videos!

I like this version of this song way better than the album version, it's heavier, if that's possible, and i like her performance on this, it's more "live", obviously, but more natural and expressive to my ear.

This band is so good. Live they are a treat for the senses. Vlad and Eugene’s playing sets the stage for Tatiana and Roman to shine and the whole band molds and forms their own unique sound, with so many influences and styles. They are the future.

The reggae sound of this song got me thinking of a band you may (or may not) have heard and see no reaction videos from you, the band Pepper. They are from Hawaii, but think they are in California now. If you have not, I would suggest the song Stone Love.
