😡😡LESSON #9 - NEVER do a video when you're fried/tired.😡😡 YES, there is a bungo-load of ghost notes that Tomas is playing. Somehow I twisted what my ears were hearing and my mind was registering and what came out of my mouth was blah - EPIC decomposer fail - anyhow, onward!

Still loved it Geebz, you're allowed to be fallible every once in awhile. Meshuggah is in my top 3 favorite metal bands, and your reactions and breakdowns are the most fun to watch. The pain face you make when you're first digesting Tomas's drum work is always priceless! Thanks for another great video. Hope to see your reaction to Ihsahn - On the Shores (saxophone metal) one of these days. Yep, still waiting, and I'm still here!

Meshuggah live is an insane experience. Especially with their additional member, the lighting guy. His lights match the music so well. He's been given the honor of being their additional member live. He deserves it. It's like you're in an amazing crazy movie and the live music just elevates it all. I can't explain it. It's trippy without ever having to do drugs. And trust me, I wanna try. A lot of people who hear Meshuggah for the first time say that same thing about the singer being a "safety net". The instruments are playing such odd patterns and many times the singer is the most obvious thing to lock in to to stay on beat because he sings to the underlying pulse that we all feel but struggle to count. That dude has a metronomic sense of the beat, the whole band does.
@jbasti227
@jbasti227 3 года назад
@derp derpin It’s cool considering they apparently don’t try writing in odd meters as much as it seems. The drums tend to be in 4/4 and the odd meter feel comes from the guitar and bass messing around with a lot of syncopation and polyrhythm that makes everything feel off. Really creative way of composing and still blows my mind how they’ve been able to create so much for so long with this method while consistently keeping things fresh and interesting.

@williamcozart8158
@williamcozart8158 3 года назад
@@jbasti227 Usually the kick drum, locked in with the guitars and bass are all playing an odd pattern while the hi hats or crash cymbal and snare play a 4/4. Or sometimes it's the ride/bell or china or even a floor tom for like "jungle" beats keeping a constant 1/4 or 1/8th note pulse with the snare hitting on the 2 and 4 but with an odd meter, maybe a 7/8 being played by the guitars, bass, and kick drum underneath. They play it a certain number of measures so that the odd pattern cycles through and the "1s" land back in sync to complete the section of the song. You can do math to figure out how many cycles of the odd pattern happen over the 4/4 cymbal/snare pattern before resolving and the "1s" lining back up, what's cool is that the effect these polyrhythms have when played together correctly makes something that sounds awesome too, it's not just like a bunch of random numbers of notes or like they just picked a time signature to play to like, say they did it such and such time sig or something. They do not sacrifice the natural feel and groove and awesome sound, like it has to sound good or they wouldn't do it. Like I said in another comment, the guitar solo section of this song(Clockworks) always makes me want to dance or move, or mosh and beat the shit out of someone, it's such a hard assed groove.

Whole lot of ghost notes in this. Watch his left hand
@stevethornton3901
@stevethornton3901 3 года назад
What no one talks about is the outro - he is playing the ghost notes from the snare on the intro, but out loud, two handed, on the upper and side toms. But he's managing that two-handed rhythm with one hand, and switching between the ghost and hits on that one hand in the intro...

Diana Ankudinova is a young performer who shocks us with her pleasant voice and takes us into the abyss of events!!! Diana Ankudinova is unique and inimitable, goosebumps from her voice!=)))) Diana sings as if she lives in the song! The soul freezes or opens with Diana's voice.=))))))) I am a musician who has been with music for years, and believe me, I have not heard such a tone in all these past years.

Geebz: "too much caffeine? this looks like a good time to do some Meshuggah" Me:"pretty sure that's the worst time to listen to Shuggs lmaoooo" and the whole thing is in 4/4, but the groupings are in 2s and 3s. Yogev did a great video on it.

Thank you!!! For pointing this out! Meshuggah has always been mathematical ❤️
@MattMcloughlin
@MattMcloughlin 3 года назад
And yet, despite Yogev's excellent explanation, I still struggle to hear the 4/4 in this one. Like I know it is and how the riffs cycle and loop etc, but this is definitely one of the more difficult Meshuggah songs to feel it in. The accents and note lengths really throw it off-kilter to the point that I remember the riffs and whole sections and can hum them back to you like muscle memory, but if you asked me to write it down and count it out around 4, i'd be lost. This song is bananas even though it's just mostly 3s and 2s around 4/4.

I'd say their sound is massive, if you listen to one of the guitars, especially live, it sounds like a blade's screech against a metal pipe. Meshuggah are the reason a lot of tech metal bands now try to keep the Gain lower and keep the low end in the pocket.

I've always wondered whether the drums in this track, in the way the bass and snare interlock, are deliberately composed to suggest the interlocking gears of a clock. Either way, that pattern is really unique and apt.

Please make reaction to Diana Ankudinova - the most unique young talented singer. One of my favourite things to find and enjoy is music that gives me chills and goosebumps. I was cruising RU-vid recently and discovered a Russian talent show contestant that did just that, with one of the best, most unique voices I've heard in many years. Her delivery was nothing short of magical and I searched out more and more and more, and...more chills. I was stunned to find that the first performance I heard was when she was 14!!!! She's now 17 and still developing. She sings in Russian, French, English and Arabic. The covers she performed on that show are very popular on RU-vid. Many RU-vidrs publish reactions on these performances, which include the ethnic song "River" (in a new musical arrangement), "Blizzard", "Wicked Game", "Human", "Derniere Danse", "Helwa Ya Baladi" and others. Please react to one of Diana's songs and I promise she will surprise you.

This is like my 4th time suggesting them so I'm just gonna paraphrase: React to something by Ghost. Band is a very unique of progressive metal/rock with classick rock from the 60's-80's (changes time period depending on the album sometimes) with a comedically satanic clergy theme. Great songs that showcase their talent and variety are From the Pinnacle to the Pit and Cirice.

Yeah the guitartone on this album is great! This album they used a variety of valve amplifiers instead of the usual modelling they have been using for so long, and also dropped the compression a little compared to the last record, which Tomas Haake thought was too compressed. Koloss is probably my favourite meshuggah album, but this one sounds amazing!

if a composer looks like he’s in pain trying to find the time signature, you know you’re progressive metal
@MatheusLeston
@MatheusLeston 3 года назад
I love how Haake approaches this time signature topic. In some interviews he says that everything is actually based in 4/4, but of course with very weird divisions and groupings (and some chopped measures here and there). I guess that you totally hit the nail in the head in this video: they want people to feel the beat, to feel the pulse. Somehow, when you can understand and feel the pulse behind this whole mess that is happening on top, it is an even more cathartic experience. Please take a look at they playing this song live. The lights are just unbelievable and synced to every beat and every hit. For me Meshuggah isn't about being clever and tricking people, but the exact opposite: they are showing people the way into the weird rhythms.
