Sonne is a good representation of their catalogue. It's a combination of their heaviness and their ability to create beautiful music. If there can only be one song to define Rammstein, that's a good choice.

Sonne is actually not a Rammstein song but a commissioned work. Vitali Klitschko's management wanted a new song for the march to the ring. However, "Sonne" was too hard for them, so they decided on Highway to Hell. The lyrics of Sonne only really make sense when you know that "Sonne" means Klitschko.

Honestly, Rammstein is one of those bands that just keeps getting better and more refined with age. Deutschland is an incredible song and the video (which I know isn't what we discuss here) rivals any great movie. Ich Tu Dir Weh is still my favorite, but Sonne and Deutschland are very close behind.

Ollie + Schneider together are epic. Both easily at the top of rock bassists & drummers. Those 2 slay the recent concert intro track Was Ich Leibe. Rumor that Till is shy doesn't fit with his off-stage persona but Ollie keeps himself to himself.

So glad to see Rammstein here. Rammstein is a great band, and their lyrics are like dark 19th century poems about 21th century people. The Ohne Dich piano cover was played on my wedding when we put the ring on, not many guests realized it was an industrial metal song. :D

This song is, content wise, absolutly a live number: it literally says "can you hear me" to the audience, and they respond. But still, there is a possible deeper meaning, in that "I want you to understand me" and "I don't understand you" can be interpreted more than simply sonically, especially as the band was really divisive in the public eye for a long time... They always work with complicated meanings and wordplay a lot.
@TheErazar

Afair they made the Links 2-3-4 song, which is also increadible during live shows, just to indicate that they do not share the far-right ideology
@WeTheJourney
@WeTheJourney 3 года назад
I assume the song is about politicians or people in power. Basically when they sing: versteht ihr mich? (do you (plural) understand me?) and then: ich verstehe Euch nicht (I dont understand you) is a representation of the level of caring for others from those in power. The song is also about the things people in power want others to believe (insinuations), their cynical aspirations. They people in the background say in the end of the song: auf jeden Fall, which means "by all means"
@nathanpapp432
@nathanpapp432 3 года назад
I think Till said this song was about him trying to come to terms with fame, the idea that thousands of people are showing up to see your silly little show, people singing the lyrics but do they really understand what you are trying to say.

+1 to the comments saying look up lyrics and translations. There's some very good German youtubers who do videos that are Rammstein song translations aimed at English speaking audiences going over the subtle contexts and cultural connotations they sit in. Know you're typically not a lyric guy but it's worth it. Part of what makes this band so special is their storytelling ability lyrically, in their music videos, and live in concert. They sit right on the border of music group and performance art troupe and it's amazing. Fair warning, the content can be fairly macabre, but it's done so in a fascinatingly alluring way. Highly highly recommend you pick a song and dive into its translation, music video, and concert performances to really get a sense of the full scope of the "vision" of Rammstein.

The singer and bassist for Type O Negative was Peter Steele. Type O has been one of my all time favorite bands. I agree, Till Lindemann has that same character to his lower registry as well. Rammstein is a literal juggernaut in Germany, Austria, and they have quite a large following world wide, even amongst those who are not speakers of German. Their music and messages, as well as their spectacular live shows have been instrumental in carrying them to world wide popularity. I would be absolutely thrilled if you decomposed more Type O, as well as Rammstein! To get a greater feel for Rammstein and what brought them together to be able to create the music they do, dig into their history. Almost all of the members were brought up in East Berlin, behind the Iron Wall. Have a great day.... it's been such fun watching your videos!

They have a funny history since two of the members played funpunk from the late 80s to the early 90s in a band named Feeling B ("Ich such die DDR"). In that time there was a really interesting growing underground music-scene in the late GDR (other examples Sandow, Die Art, Die Skeptiker, AG Geige, Freunde der italienischen Oper). Feeling B and the beginnings of Rammstein in the mid-90s are parts of the documentaries "Flüstern & Schreien" (Wispering & Screaming).

Thank you for the reaction. Subscribed, and checked out as many of the comments as I could. I'm a big Rammstein fan and unfortunately I need to do a big info dump here -- they are actually one of the biggest, highest grossing rock bands in the world, and their 2019 Stadium Tour used one of the largest stages ever constructed for a rock concert. It also (unfortunately to the other commenters) makes their pre-2019 live shows, such as the Paris shows, essentially obsolete. Here is the critical information: The Rammstein 2019 tour was the second highest grossing tour in the world of non-English language acts, behind only Korean “K-pop” band “BTS”. In Europe they were just behind Metallica and Ed Sheeran in TOTAL receipts: Sheeran; $147.63 million; Metallica $135.56 million; Rammstein; $131.26 million. Despite only playing 31 shows in Europe, for the 2019 WORLD WIDE all-languages category of “Rock Groups”, they were #3 behind ONLY the Rolling Stones and Metallica, and IN FRONT OF: Fleetwood Mac, KISS, Bon Jovi, U2, and the Eagles (in that order), and of all musical genres in all languages world wide, 4th in the world after only the above three “Rock” groups plus BTS, and WORLD WIDE were AHEAD of: ALL COUNTRY performers (#1 Garth Brooks $78.29 million; #2 Eric Church $70.67 million; #3 Florida Georgia Line $52.43 million, and #4 Carrie Underwood $51.86 million); ALL POP GROUPS (#2 Arashi $115.35 million; #3 Jonas Brothers $109.87 million; #4 Backstreet Boys $101.36 million) and ALL HIP HOP groups: (#1; Eminem $42.82 million; #2 Drake $33.88 million, etc.). Finally, the Rammstein Stadium Tour was shortlisted for the _Total Productions International trade association_ group’s prestigious “ *Live Production of the Year 2020 Award* ”. Presented in London, England, February 24, 2020 (1,700 in attendance; Black Tie only), this annual awards event recognizes excellence in all facets of concert production, including stage design, stage lighting, sound quality, power tech, crowd security, transportation technology, as well as the managers and management companies of individual tours. The other nominees for "Production of the Year" were: the Chemical Brothers, Marco Borsato, Muse, Stormzy, and Take That. The award was ultimately won by Stormzy, headlining “The Glastonbury Show”, June 28, 2019 (audience of approx. 135,000). The stage Rammstein used for this tour is one of the four largest ever constructed in the world , along with: U2's 2008 "360 Tour" "Claw" stage, Taylor Swift's "Snake" Tour stage, and the Rolling Stones most recent tour stage. The band released a completely separate time-lapse video just of the _construction_ of the stage, taken over the 6-days it takes, filmed when they set up for their first show at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, Dresden, Germany, June 12, 2019. This is at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JgGuRKgvWQ4.html. It has a respectable number of 10,063,739 views just on its own, as of today. The average ticket price on tour was US$101.34. The largest attendance at a single show was 72,367, June 22, 2019, Olympiastadion, Berlin. The number of shows with more than 50,000 persons in attendance was _nine_ . The best overall VIDEOS of the 2019 Stadium concert series are by RU-vid uploader “Rammstein Live by TheKeyboardfucker”. He has done fantastic work and all Rammstein followers should congratulate him and thank him for his efforts - it is virtually pro-shot and is in Anamorphic cinema format. Do not be offended by the name ("K-Bd-Fu"). It is a "pun" or translation twist from the title of the autobiographic book written by the keyboard player for Rammstein, Flake Lorenz. In GERMAN the title is written as "Der Tastenficker". The complete title, from publishers Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf, reads: "Der Tastenficker - An was ich mich so erinnern kann". It is 352 pages and you can purchase a copy from the Rammstein Shop for 14.99 Euros. (The person behind "K-Bd-Fu" is ALSO a keyboard player, that is why he is attracted to Flake). As for recommended videos to watch, all of KBF's are good. I would recommend these: 1) "Rammstein" at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6IuGu_-K7gQ.html. Spectacular, pro-shot video showing off their new stage and effects. 2) "Du Hast", always a popular choice, at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PLr9YRGIyXk.html. 3) "Ohne Dich", a soft, romantic song that Till wrote himself, at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yBLd6RG-Xsk.html. Pans the stadium to show their massive, 60,000 plus crowd. 4) He has a video of the famous "Deutschland" performance, but it is blocked on RU-vid so you have to go to his Vimeo page. But well worth the effort (I have found on other posts that if I include the URL here RU-vid will block my comment). Any or all of these would be great! Thanks again for the reaction, and keep well ... T.C.

I'm glad this showed up in my recommendations! It's the first time I've watched your content and I chalk the recommendation up to being a big Rammstein fan and watching lots of other music reaction videos! Some of my favorite Rammstein songs that I would like to see you decompose are Sonne, Mein Herz Brennt and Reise, Reise.

The "0 negative" band is Type 0 Negative. :-) The singer you mean is/was the late Peter Steele. Glad you finally found Rammstein. Sonne is really one of their best songs! Also want to mention "Du riechst so gut", but any recommended song really is fine! Thank you for reacting!

I’m stoked that you got to Rammstein. They’re awesome. Good songs to do when you come back around to them: - Du Reischt So Gut - Seemann - Du Hast, Engel, Spiel Mit Mir, Alter Mann - Sonne & Mein Herz Brennt - there’s a strings version and an album version of Mein Herz Brennt, do the album version - Benzin, Keine Lust, Mein Teil, Stein um Stein - Mann Gegen Mann, Rosenrot, Hilf Mir - Rammlied, Fruhling In Paris, B******* - Deutschland Enjoy my guy! Awesome to see that the intro’s back too!

These guys have been around since the mid 90s and are still releasing absolute bangers. Two of their recent (well recent-ish, 2019) singles, Deutschland and Radio, are amazing. Also the band name is (roughly) pronounced Rum-shtine/Rahm-shtine, with a trill on the R for added effect.

Absolutely this is what they call Industrial Metal. As its best, I'd say. Rammstein (Oomph! among others, to stay in Germany) are involved in the birth of the genre. And it's pronounced something like RAM-SHTAIN ( ˈʀamʃtaɪ̯n ) :D
@acougarscub

Rammstein got their inspiration from Oomph! they were around before they got together. There is an interview that one of the guitarists did for RadioGoethe.de and spoke about it.

@@acougarscub I know I know, that's why I cited them as one of the "founders" :) Even if, at the beginning of their career, there was slight less metal and a lot more of electronic in their music.

I found it hilarious when you were slapping your fist down on your hand to represent your point of the music because if you ever see them live ... and you really should because they are quite possibly the greatest live entertainers ever you will see the lead singer regularly doing that exact motion into his knee in time with the music. Rammstein always remind me of the old joke - If French is the language of Love then German is the language of hate - there's a sense of anger and aggression inherent in the guttural nature of the language that lends itself to this style.

There is a one "thumb down"? Boo!!! Geebz - keep rocking on man!!! You are the best decomposer! I would qualify this as industrial rock, especially since that was their roots in the 90s. Music transcends language, much like math is the universal language. Hope that makes sense.
