ABOUT
I'm Shayla, an earthy mountain mama to 6 wildlings, & a blessed wife to one since 2004. We're a big, Jesus loving, God fearing family & we love to laugh! Hubby & I are second generation homeschoolers, & have been homeschooling our children from the start-since around 2009. We were raised unconventionally, and our parents utilized homesteading before it was trendy, and it was a goal and dream of ours to do the same-but it's only been recently that we have been able to bring this dream to full potential. Last year the Heavenly Father brought to life our dream that we've had for over 25 years and enabled us to begin buying a mountain homestead fixer upper, so join us in the adventures and fun here at our new homeschool/homestead! Be sure to subscribe. In 2023 my goal is to upload once a month.
Video's you can find here that I enjoy creating include;

I just watched my first video to your channel just now. I have to say your video has touched me so deeply. I’m amazed of what you shared especially towards the end about that mother who has been struggling. This is why I subscribe to channels like yours because you care and are out to make a positive difference in this world. You are using your channel for good and I really love that. We all need help sometime in our lives and what a wonderful way to do so like you have been. One of my favorites and what made me subscribe is the fact quoting scriptures. When we turn to our savior Jesus Christ he will give us strength and comfort. He promises us that he will send a comforter to us if we follow him. Thanks again for your kindness and for doing what you do.

Yes, I'm 67 yo and been doing this homemaker journey for 48 years. Cooking from scratch 80% of meals when all 4 children were home. Going to college full time (made made the Dean's list several times) and working 32+ hrs a week, washed and hung up laundry for 6 people on a weekly basis, building up the pantry, by scratch meals and it took a lot of work but it also took a schedule to do it. I have anxiety too. Your version of how to deal with the tensions, anxiety, too much with too little time and taking it all to God in prayer is so important and so beautifully stated. I remember going into the bathroom (the only room where my children knew to leave Mama alone) and crying and praying. I pled the blood of Jesus many times over my household. I made it through! Now we're empty nesters (I have many health problems) I'm still doing the gardening, canning, foraging, dehydrating, cooking from scratch, taking care of livestock now, hatching out our own chicks and ducklings via incubator, making homemade bread weekly, still doing the laundry thing only for 2 people now and I still take it all to God! All I can state is, just keep doing it! It's rewarding! God Blesses us with answered prayers via Energy, stamina, enjoyment, curiosity, fulfillment, great tasting food, etc. Bless you and your family and all who watch your channel!

This was such great advice. I have been married for 37 years and homeschooled my 4 kids for about 23 years. Plus a niece and a nephew. I, too, have experienced the heartbreak of watching "ideal" families fall apart. If I have learned nothing else, I have learned this. Homeschooling can be an insatiable taskmaster. It's easy to let your children, their education, and their 'ideal' lifestyle become all absorbing. But remember to keep your priorities in line. God, then husband, then children. If you neglect your husband for the sake of your children, he will feel like and outsider at home, and the relationship won't last. If you put the needs of the kids aside to focus on your husband, the relationship will flourish. Don't worry. He won't let you neglect his kids. It will all balance out if you keep priorities in order.

I relate to that subscriber - not an orphan, but my mom wasn't really present in the kitchen. I learned to chop veggies efficiently from college roommates who saw how slow I was and offered to help me with that skill. Connecting at home has been a struggle - my dad was very hands-on for teaching how to diy projects, use power tools, etc, and also taught me some kitchen skills, but the actual homemaking - systems, habits, flow, routines, etc - were not taught to me. Now with a blended family, a special needs child, a set of twins (older toddlers), and expecting another baby (#6), and trying to co-parent with my wasband who is rather absent... I finally can see how things are coming together! Not because things are easier, but because I am learning skills, growing with God, and leaning into this calling ❤ Keep going and growing ladies!

Hey! I’m just giving you a chef’s tip about how to get your flour to stick to any of your ingredients when frying them; the real trick is to dredge them in the flour before you put any eggs or wet ingredients to them, then dip them in the egg mixture and then back into the flour again. I know that probably sounds backwards, but my husband who’s been a very affluent chef for over 20 years taught me this a long time ago and it really works! It will ensure that your batter actually sticks to the food and doesn’t fall off into your oil. It fries better too in general because it’s layered better. I also recommend drying off your produce after the salt bath, (which btw is exactly what you’re supposed to do so well done on that!) and then after drying the ingredient lay them flat on a paper towel and then sprinkle some salt on it and let it sit for a few minutes. Then you drudge it in the flour then submerge it in the eggs and then back into the flour again and then add to the hot oil to fry. Also yes to adding the herbs and spices to the flour as well. I love your videos so much and love everything that you do. I just love your style and i feel like you are literally living my dream life in every single way and you have my ultimate dream home in the ultimate region where it snows in winter and warm in summer and has that small village feel to it. You clean exactly the way i prefer and you just do everything the way i love things and your style the way i love too and you do all the things i love but haven’t been able to due to lack of finances, poor health and the inability to have more than the two in home children i still have. I wish i could live your life. I also school my kids at home too but they are all special needs which can be hard at times. My body feels like it’s been falling apart faster than i am able to keep up with and I’m so exhausted and discouraged. I have such a heart for Jesus and i am so desperate for him to be in every aspect of my life. But i also have extreme trauma and no one to help me either. No friends and no family. This is hardest year we’ve ever had financially and there’s no end in sight and i just don’t know what God’s calling is for my life. I just wish i had a girlfriend who loves Jesus like i do that i could talk to or even just have a study with once in awhile that shared some common interests with. I’ve been wanting to start a RU-vid of an online ministry type of thing but with my constant health battles i just don’t know where to begin or if it’s what God wants me to do. I’m just craving a homestead with a garden and space to roam and finally feel connected to the earth and to God organically. Right now i just feel so disconnected to nature and it’s so depressing. I feel so disconnected to my nurturing nature and ability to feel like a mother or a wife or even a woman. I’m so overweight right now from steroids and seizure meds and it’s so disheartening And makes me embarrassed to leave the house or let anyone see me. I’m not being treated for ADHD right now either and i desperately need to do something for it because I’m not even functional anymore it’s gotten so bad. Anyway sorry to rant on my issues. I just wanted to let you know that I’m so thankful for your channel and it fills me with so much peace and warmth. Even though I’m not able to live a similar lifestyle like i want to, I’m just so thankful that i can turn to your channel and still get the chance to enjoy it through your beautiful and blessed life and your amazing encouraging words and deep experiences you’ve lived through and overcome. You are so wise and you have such a beautiful heart for Jesus. I am not envious of you and i say all of this in love and appreciation, not jealousy or negativity towards you. Thank you again so much for continuing this channel even when you felt like giving up. I’m thankful you didn’t. God bless!

MA'AM! Jesus knew I NEEDED to hear this message today! I'm on my first year of homeschooling my 6 & 7 year olds and we also have a 2 year old, and this is HARD! I think you hit the nail on the head! You absolutely have to look at homemaking as being self employed. If you weren’t raised with a strong work ethic, develop one!!! It is also a skill! Time management is another skill. Including your children in your work day so they have those skills. My girls (3 of them,all very close in age) all had chores/ house work. When I made bread, they each got a hunk of dough and made dough babies at the kitchen table. It kept them busy while I actually got bread made. Pizza night always meant three little pizzas with one big one. Sock matching was heir chore for laundry time. I was often doing it on my own as my ex husband was deployed to the Mid East most of the time being gone for 6 to 8 months at a time. I had scheduled that I stuck to and that helped not getting overwhelmed. By the time my girls hit 6th grade they were responsible for one dinner a week. They had to check the pantry and see if we needed anything on that weeks shopping list. If they took the last of anything it got added to the shopping list. My oldest didn’t like cooking so we knew it was chili every time it was her night to cook. The rule was no complaining or you got to take over the dinner for them the next week. Having some kind of structure really helped me. 12 deployments in 10 years didn’t leave us with a marriage at the end. After 27 years we called it quits. That also was a hurdle, but you have to look forward. I also loved how you mentioned that there are seasons of motherhood. I used to call the toddler years the tired years!😊 Grace, have some for yourself when you didn’t achieve what you wanted to, it’s usually waiting for you on a new day.

That contact paper you put on the tile table is wonderful! We have some diy counter-top like spaces in our tiny kitchen made of plywood, and a fellow mom recommended putting contact paper to cover the wood to make it easier to wipe down, and it's truly brilliant! We replace it as needed.

A wonderful share of a message at the end! Thank you! I am it for my kid and husband as well. No family around, and no super close friends live near us. My husband works for the national park service so we often live quite remotely and at times mostly around singles, not other families. I moved my son and myself to an apartment a bit away from my husband’s current job location thinking we’d make more friends and be happier. Ironically we’re miserable. Finding videos like this from other Christian homemakers helps me tremendously and helps remind me to trust God. Thank you for sharing.

42:17 Just a PSA about the waterproof wallpaper vinyl. I would be concerned that it contains toxic PFAS chemicals. 😬 It might be something you want to look into. Unfortunately they are in most waterproof things. I'm just becoming more aware of them and their ubiquity. Mamavation is a good website with more info on what they are and the harm they can cause. They also get products tested to see if they contain PFAS. Your kitchen is so beautiful though! I really love your home decor style!

The encouragement on the overwhelm was so spot on - I feel completely overwhelmed most days juggling a job that feels so demanding either over time expectations and a toxic atmosphere (even tho it’s home based) alongside the responsibilities at home- which id rather be focusing on - however you’ve encouraged me to take it one day at a time and keep running to God while building new skills one at a time ! Amen & Amen Shayla!!! Thank you for your obedience to the Lord- for sharing your life and experience with all of us. If I may add that I too looked to my Granny as inspiration and have felt like I have fallen short of the standards that she set many times over ( but I keep trying😊). But the Lord has reminded me about all the friends, family and community that our grandparents enjoyed. There were always neighbors about each other’s homes enjoying coffee at the kitchen table. They did so many things together and were like-minded. In the season that I find myself in, there are not many who embrace “the old paths” and I often feel isolated. Thankfully- there are women like you that I consider part of my “tribe” and I have the privilege of visiting with you at your kitchen table……and I am so very thankful ❤❤❤❤.

Hi from Lochness Scottish Highlands This was very informative and real.. I trained as a chef.. Just a thought for raising dough and dough starter.. In the trade we put a tray of boiling water at the base of a cold oven to bring it to temperature to act as a proving oven and for some breads we cook with the tray of water still in place creating steam in the oven as the bread cooks..See what you think!! Kindness to you and your family from the scottish Highlands..

Thank you for sharing your recipes. I started my sourdough and will be attempting to make English muffins. I saw you making them and thought perfect timing🙂 I love that you share the Word in every situation you can. This video was on point. Only the Lord can help us through all seasons. My mom was a homemaker, but we went to public school. I am both a homemaker and do homeschool. It is tough to “get it all done,”but if we prioritize Him first, things seem to work out more smoothly. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you! Have a blessed evening!

Loved this video ❤ homeschooling mama of five here, thank you so much for sharing! I would love for you to share some of your favorite audio books for kids homeschooling. I definitely would love to order that radio too, totally my style 😊 you’ve inspired me to hunt down my nourishing traditions book and make that salsa too! Do you ferment your pickles too? I made them for the first time but added way to much pickling spice and that taste like clove 🤦‍♀️ any tips to fix the flavor or would you toss them to the compost?
@mountainhomesteadfamily
@mountainhomesteadfamily 9 месяцев назад
Hello!! Thank you for the sweet comment! Yes, I do ferment some pickles! Since they don't stay good as long I only do enough for around 4 months though. I find they get mushy beyond that. I've found a little spice goes such a long way with fermented foods. I made that mistake beforehand too! I do not know how to fix them but you might try adding them to potatoe salad? Let me know how that works! Audio books, yes! Here you are, Little House on the Prairie series (this is just the first one) amzn.to/3t1Ws7r Boxcar Children amzn.to/3ZipOL8 All of Susan Wise Bauer's history books amzn.to/44TIW3d The Hobbit amzn.to/45UM7J8 LOTR amzn.to/3LoJ2sG Chronicles of Narnia amzn.to/3LrEGkC Those should get you started!

I enjoyed this so much. It covered a lot of recipes and things I have wondered about. I have always wante dto learn how to make sourdough starters (still a little confused about some of it), how to make pickles (I once tried where they said to just put vinegar and water and add the cucumber and it was not that tasty for me), and how to make bagels. Thanks for this. You are a great homemaker.

I think this differs by stove and maybe even elevation, I bake mine around 350F for about 40 min or until the internal temp reaches 190 to 200F. Hope this helps!

You speak a great deal of salt in this video. Have you tried Redman salt? Redman salt is incredibly healthy and has no additives. Many of the salts in any grocery add iodine and sugar, as well. Put your onions and garlic through a food processor, blender; it is faster and makes light work of small garlic and onions. 💚💚💚 Thank you for sharing your ideas.

I think women are overwhelmed today with homemaking because as children their mothers weren't homemaking and therefore the training they would have received say as a pioneer or colonial time- woman isn't there. Originally training was done since childhood, taking care of younger siblings, helping manage household chores, routines, etc... now, unless your mother was a homemaking homeschooling mother and raised you to be the same- you're not receiving training. Mother's who raise their children to have the same lifestyle they're raised in, will set their children up for a successful lifestyle. Also, previous generations had multigenerational households. Grandma and Grandpa were still puttering around the house and able to help with monumental tasks such as processing the harvest or popping in with a well placed suggestion. All of the tasks we are trying to do on our own now- are tasks that we were traditionally doing in a "village" setting, with close friends extended families and multiple generations. I grew up in one of those multigenerational homes where I could bounce questions off of my grandparents or aunt or uncles. I wasn't expected to know everything, there wasn't pressure to know everything, there wasn't an internet to scroll through, there wasn't any pressure to be a Pinterest mom... there was just "this is how we do this..." I love watching other moms doing what they were raised doing, when I get a few minutes, it's like our own homemaking soap opera.... which reminds me, I have to break out some soap molds for later tonight.
