What I love about this time is the fact that there was no "EasyJets" "RyanAir" etc...it's just Airlines from countries and that was so much cooler. You knew which countries they were from and where they were going/coming from.
Brilliant film! Brings back such good memories of my trips to LHR/LGW in the late 80's!! L1011's, DC-10's, 727's, the Tupolev's, not to mention the DC-8's and 707's!!! All the old girls!! It's just not the same with all the new breed of aircraft about nowadays. Don't get me wrong, the safety aspect of aircraft is so much more advanced than it was back in the day, but still miss the old machines!! Thanks for posting this!
BA's A320 aside, the only aircraft "relic" still flying today, out of this 1989 Heathrow hodge-podge, is probably the Tu-154, but it would no longer be in Malev's livery. Possibly a couple of these 737-300s too. But that would be it.
Those aircraft engine sounds at Heathrow, just awesome !! And, those majestic 747's of BA .. all lined up; what a delight !! Nice to see that AI Jumbo Jet take off from LHR, probably on its way to BOM. Wow !! You even managed to capture the run and take off of the majestic BA Concorde !! Great spotting !!
A blast from the past. What a great video! Just how it should be. Straight aviation action, original sound and no music or other video-pollution. Thanks for posting this!
14:23 *BRITISH AIRWAYS CONCORDE!!!!!* Man i wish those planes were still around plus that amazing retro livery!! *i'd like to see that livery* on one of British Airways's *787s or A350s*
Never did get to see a Concorde unfortunately, I did however hear their sonic boom occasionally when I lived in the South-West of Ireland. As for that old British Airways livery, I don't know if you're aware of this, but to celebrate their centenary this year they retro painted some of their 747-400's. Here's a link to a video, hope it's useful to you (mind your volume as the noise from the wind is quite intense!). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I0ONNV0anhs.html
Also, they've even gone and painted one in the BOAC livery! As you may already know, British Airways evolved out of the break up of BOAC. Here's a link to said retro livery. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r773ZhIBlsY.html
I am so priviledged to be still living under their flight paths in 2015 remembering Concorde blasting over my house and watching it banking on my road always left me speechless on every ocassion kindly taken over by the A380. As did when she landed on either 27L and 27R I will intend on moving closer to Heathrow and not further away as I believe that this airport should be called "Harvir' Heathrow" after me.
I worked as a stewardess on many 727's back in the late 60's and 70 but my favorite to work was the Boeing 707 from NY to LA flying out of JFK especially in First Class. Champagne anyone?
Thanks for uploading this video. Brings back memories of when my parents and I spent a day watching the planes at Heathrow. You saved the best for last. When we went, we only just got there in time to see Concorde take off- sadly we'll never have that opportunity again.
I absolutely love this video, it's like stepping back in time seeing all those now long gone airliners that I grew up with. I was just a spotty teenager when this was filmed! A real treat, thanks for uploading it.
Patrick what a pleasure to see the golden old timers in action in this superb video. The action gives me goosebumps when we both young especially the picture of the Concorde seen both in action at Charles de Gaulle and Toronto Pearson my home town. The last flight we are as a family was on a Tristar to Charles de Gaulle in 1983 it has been so many years since I have been on a flight. Nothing like the oldies good solid metal made to last!! Patrick have a great week and weekend mate catch you on the next flight!!
How fitting to save the best and only outstanding plane (The Concorde) to be last in this video. This is the only reason why I watched the video. I can't get enough of the Concorde.
It’s sad to see reminders of some excellent airlines that are no more as well as aircraft that were so much more comfortable than today’s squeeze boxes. Sabena, PanAm, TWA,
I always considered the old livery to be one of the most bland and boring out there. The new livery is an improvement, less white, but rather conservative. But then they are a conservative airline.
I live under the flight path too, i miss Concorde going over everyday, and i cannot remember the last time i saw a three engined plane....these planes seem very old despite it being not to long ago...
Chris Dans Shame... I really miss the old planes.... variety is the spice of life. Technology has improved and eventually you'll only see 2 engined planes due to economy of scale. The large 474 and 380s will be a distant memory.
Heavy bulk loading aircraft 200 bags to 300 bags in cargo hold ... dragging them from the door way Lucky I am working on widebody aircraft today as shown above in 1989

Ah, those halcyon days when one could jump on the tube and hit the Queens Building (and even T-3 and T-2) for a Summer's day of spotting and nary a visit from security or the Police. If only I had a 'Way Back Machine'...
Lovely afternoon memories for me too ... halcyon days long before terrorists put paid visits to the viewing deck area. AI 747s on their daily afternoon Kennedy run just after 1 pm and Concorde on its 2nd daily to the same city. Wonderful! And AC as well as BA Tristars. Miss both chubbies so much ...
Oh! Those Happy Days ! Plane Spotting at the End of the Runways at Heathrow with my kids in the Back standing on the seat with the Roof open screaming if the next plane was coming and Even Louder if it was Concord !
Omg Heathrow airport 1989 the last time I went abroad 26 September 1989 I went to New York with my dad I remember after the plane took off I vomited in toilet afterwards I fell asleep on my dad's lap I was only 9 I was so scared and I have not been abroad since then
Lufthansa livery has never changed. Even now they've got the Boeing 747-8, Airbus A380, they've got nearly every single commercial plane and yet their livery has changed. i wonder what Lufthansa's History would have been like!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will look it up. I too that is been in the travel business for over 20 years also. Just with United alone 21 years not including the other airlines I worked for. Also not including my parents, we are a airline family. But I will look it up. For the 727s that were used in LHR were reconfigured much different than the ones in the states. I was told by the ex Pan Am FAs based in LHR that these Airplanes in LHR that they were their old planes.
pan am and twa had some narrow body based in Europe. They connected London, Frankfurt with some cities in the East of Europe. I was flying TWA from Warszava to Prague then the flight final destination was Frankfurt.
Yes you right... I love the Old British Airways Livery. With the Monarchy sign on it. That showed the world we are British and proud. They should bring it back. I think when changed the livery in the 90s that was the worst decision every made by BA.
Fun fact: The reason why you don't see any United, Delta, or American Airlines Aircraft is because the Bermuda II Treaty didn't allow them to operate US flights to Heathrow, only British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Pan Am, and TWA could do it. AA and United would enter the market in 1991 after buying the rights from Pan Am and TWA, while Delta would not show up until around 2008 when the Open Skies treaty came in
I forgot to add. That even though I do have many, many years in the airline industry. Dinosour.LOL Doesn't mean I know everything, I am always learning and have known to be wrong at timed. LOL Baut again I will look it up. Thank You
Oh, the "good old days" b4 Ryan Air when you had to be an effing millionaire to fly anywhere in Europe for a "quickie" with your girlfreind (in my case) in Munich. God bless Ryanair!. Love you Michael.
CF1964 Pan am and Twa had some planes based in Europe. From US, passengers in transit to some cities in Eastern Europe (and beyond) were flying with those planes. TW847 Athen-Rome was hijacked in 1985. It was a 727
They flew between Heathrow & other European airports like a Pan am European domestic aircraft. The bomb that brought down the Pan am 747 flight 103 over Lockerbie was originally flowen on a Pan am 727 from Frankfurt.
