Because Jesus was human. He came to earth from Heaven to save his people but that does not mean God left heaven. Prayer to Mary is asking her to present a petition to her Son, which is not seeking Mary for salvation. The Son loves his mother so much, he will be SURE to obtain an answer and fulfill the petition. Do you keep a momento of your loved ones, a photograph? Do you look at it and remember the person fondly with love and admiration? You are not worshipping that person or their image as an idol. Statues of Mary are on the same level as a visual aid of her memory. I was raised as a protestant, but the Holy Spirit taught me that veneration of Mary (Miriam) is respect due to her as she carried and birthed the Savior. Jesus is worshipped as He is Lord and Savior. Catholics regard him so highly that it would be a presumption to ask him directly for a petition. So the believers ask Mary to present their requests to the Lord. And in the Middle East, when someone is VERY highly respected (Christ), one who seeks a petition uses an intermdiary for the petition. This is not idolatry. This is what the Holy Spirit taught me. We have been grossly misinformed.
