Demri, thank you for trying to get Hillbilly to understand the importance of understanding and protecting bees. Too many people wrongly categorize wasps and hornets and their bad behavior with bees. A former beekeeper.
@@wynottgivemore9274 Amazing things, got a big nest near the house. _IF_ anyone messes with them the others all get an alert and they come to help. We leave them alone and they just go about their biz. Had to catch and release one or two and the gang showed up to find out why their friend was sending out an SOS.
True. Apiologist and Entomologist are still trying to find out why our bee's are dying out. People need to understand without bee's our food supply would be drastically effected. No more Fruits to name one. Something so small, yet enormously vital to our survival and most animals.
@@opossom1968no, we know what’s killing the bees. We’re simplifying hundreds of thousands of acres of habitat into large crop fields without weedy boundaries and fence rows, and dousing them with insecticides. It’s super obvious if you live around agriculture why they struggle. I live on a mountain and have fields up here, and rent a valley farm around crop agriculture, and in the valley there are less bees, no bats, fewer tree swallows, etc. I ain’t confused about what’s killing the bees. It’s happening in front of my eyes every day. Also effective broad spectrum herbicides that kill off weeds in fields, and simplified rotations that no longer include years of hay or pasture. Basically it’s agriculture, and it’s obvious.
if you put a pressure compensated, load sensing variable displacement pump on it, it will go faster and you will actually have some serious pulling power
You got a great deal on the wrecker. Those 90’s fuel injected 460’s weren’t very powerful but they were very reliable. Good thing is they can be made into torque monsters fairly easily. The fact that everything still works after sitting outside for 7 years is pretty amazing.
Whether your a Ford fan or not if you can’t admit that OBS Ford was one of the best truck produced you have problems. There’s a reason the F series truck has been the best selling truck for 46 consecutive years. I still run a couple OBS’s everyday for my business along with new trucks because they are just rock solid.
Usually when a wrecker starts winching the RPM raises to like 3000 RPM. At that RPM the winch will be fast. So that feature does not seem to work.. I assume a lever on the back can controll the RPM of the engine. A hydraulic winch is way way stronger then electric ones. And should be as fast.
@@Stratos53100 Yes. It either has a mechanical lever connection to the crane levers that is in operable or another way it can raise the RPM of the engine so it can power the hydraulics. When that is done the crane should be fast and very very powerfull. Stronger than electric powered by a battery.
Interesting acquisition. You and Rory can have a ford wrecker pull off. That winch will pull a mountain over. Speed can be had with a few parts changes. High speed isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's a single line, but it'll get some work done. Get the wiring right so you're not chasing gremlins all the time. It'll be fun to see where this goes.
I've restored 9 of those F250/F350 trucks over the last 20 years. I highly recommend a Saginaw power steering pump conversion, no more whine, way more reliable. The third brake light wasn't a thing until '94. On the '92 and '93, it's only a cargo light. In '94 is when Ford added the 3rd brake light/cargo light combo. I'd also do a ZF-5 speed manual transmission swap. It's literally bolt in. Rory's truck is a ZF-5 speed. Far far more reliable than that E4OD automatic. That's what makes Fords so fun, is their interchangeability!
What interchangabilty? Back in the day you had to figure out if it had a Cleveland, Windsor, or an M. One wouldn't bolt to the others transmission, components wouldn't interchange. At least with Chevrolet a small block would bolt to anything else. That's why most people that do mods always goes with Chevrolet, easier to work on, actual TRUE interchangabilty. When i was going to automotive school, we always had a motto. If a manufacturer could find a way to screw something up, it would be Ford.
@timothygeiger8271 Tim, this isn't back then. The 9th generation F-Series trucks. 1992-1997 (F-250/F-350/F-Superduty) were all very interchangeable. I wouldn't post a comment like that, wasting my time if it wasn't. The 9th gens are extremely plug-and-play. I've worked on them for 20+ years now.
Absolutely!! 100% agree that this rig need the Saginaw power steering conversion. I have done this twice myself and the difference is incredible, and cheap!
Must not have too much faith in the towing ability of that shiny new Duramax since you brought the Trekker along to tow the new tow truck back to the shop. 😇 Love the new Purchase!
great looking wrecker should eventually add to your fleet of recovery vehicles and its great seeing Adlea and having her tell her jokes thanks for bringing us along on your adventures and keep making great videos 📹 😀 you keeping us informed.....
She is so funny . she lights' up the video with her joke's😂 . She sure look like her mom with her smiles all the time. Take care now and be safe with the new project. Great Buy.
Very cool purchase, Robby! I think your shop is a great new home for that wrecker! So sorry the former operator has passed on, but I'm sure his sister is happy to see it used as intended and not as a home for bees and/or wasps.
I will SOOO be looking forward to what you guys do with this truck. You said it Diamond in the Rough! Maybe a slight lift, definitely the 5 winches. Yea don't delay this one too much.
My ol' 92 3/4 ton 460 has it...and its a bugger to fix. I think you have to take the drinker side fender off just to (break off the manifold bolts) fix it. LOL
You will not go wrong with your new to you OBS Ford. I have a 1993 with a 300 line six with 220,000 miles still my daily work truck. Look forward to you building it out.
Congrats on the addition to your fleet, Robby! You should consider reaching out to Casey Ladell…. He’s got a similar rig and might be able to give you some ideas.
Small world syndrome in action... Noticed the Castle Rock, CO labels on the truck. My old neck of the woods! Went to grade, junior, and senior high school there.
$2800 for a 1-ton 4X4 truck is a screaming deal. I sold a 1985 Chevy K30 single cab rust free Las Vegas dually with a 454/T400/NP205/Dana 60 front/Dana 70 rear a few years ago that ran and drove, but was still wore out from one end to the other for $7500.
I like Hillbilly's suggestion - put in a 12 valve Cummins and that will make that little Ford wrecker a real gem! And installing 5 winches from Harbor Tools will make it very useful for off road and sketchy recoveries! That Ford wrecker was a really good buy!
Hydraulic winches speed is dependent on where the PTO is installed on the Transmission. If it’s installed in a constant speed licit will be slow. Since that truck is setup on a hydraulic pump run off the engine itself the speed will vary depending on the engine RPM. I’ve installed tons of PTO’s and winches of all sizes up to 120 ton on trucks with my dads company and I’ve seen and ran hydraulic winches that are much faster than electric. The only winches I’ve ever ran that are faster are chain driven that are connected via a splitter/transfer case as you can use the transmission gears and engine speed to spin them faster.
Those old Ford push rod engines were just better. If you're going to rebuild everything, this is a great place to start. It has the potential to better than anything you could buy new. Especially with these folks doing it.
You got a steal on that OBS Ford wrecker. Cant wait to see you do some upgrades and put it to work. I would keep the hydraulic winch and just add some additional electric winches.
11:18 I use those electrical connectors for my winch on a cradle on the front of my '03 Rubicon. It has a 2nd battery for the winch in the trunk and I used #2 welding cable for the plugs from the battery. I have plugs front and rear so I can use the winch either front or back. I also made up a jumper cable like this one to use the winch battery for starting vehicles so that there is no danger of wiping out the $700 PCM. Warn 9000# winch and cradle is 110#. The welding cable insulation is very durable and the fine strands of wire makes it flexible. All electrical connections/lugs are both crimped and soldered. I use the marine battery switch to tie the batteries together so that I can jump start the Jeep easily. I can also carry the winch, battery, and chain to where I cannot get the Jeep to assist someone.
This truck was affectionately named Charlie It lived its life in larkspur Colorado And Castle Rock There's a lot of off-camber roads that it worked best on ! That was around 2000 Truck worked pretty good ! See you at John Wayne Cancer foundation Ridgeway Colorado September 23rd
Y'all definitely need an off-road wrecker.., just in case Matt does the Off-Road Wrecker Games again - lol. Nah, you definitely need a dedicated off-road recovery vehicle. This will be a great build, can't wait to see it in action.
I "like" Chevy cars better than Ford cars (Mustangs excepted). But, based on experience with a lot of different wrecker bodies on an lot of F350 chassis versus a lot of different wrecker bodies on equivalent Chevy/GMC chassis I've found the Ford to be the superior work vehicle. The F350s always felt tighter, more solid, "stronger" and more comfortable. The "antique" jumper cable plug-in box setup on your 1992 F350 is actually a very handy thing to have. You're still good to go if someone has "borrowed" the jump box and they don't "run down". Back in the day, if you did a lot of road service calls they would save the driver's back and the hood's hinges (imagine the wear on the hood's hinges if you're raising the hood ten or twelve times a day, every day, just to give a jump start!) The combination of having a sling/wheel lift unit with nice winches and a good set of dolly wheels on a four wheel drive truck probably gives one the best possible go anywhere, do anything tow/recovery vehicle.
That old Ford will run for a hundred years if you take care of it. I do highly recommend that you pay attention to the transmission. I had a 95 F150 that was a fantastic truck, the only issues I ever had was the transmission. I come from Ford country, I grew up just 20 miles away from the Ford Truck plant in Norfolk Virginia back before it closed.
Guys...and The Boss of course...thanks for letting us know that the old 1920's Off-Road Tow Truck project Rory was going to do for you is still in the works...we can't wait to see it, see it work and see what it can do.
I believe GMC really did a great job on the design of the Denali over the Chevy version. Great looking truck. I would not buy one, i like my Ford F150, to me it is way more comfortable then the GMC or Chevy, i am not a fan of the square look, i like curves.
I think I would build the roll cage in the laymo before i put the roof back on. It would be easier to weld the top. You could just clamp the roof in place when you need to check for clearance.
Eric with BSF has a hydraulic winch on his wrecker. Awhile back he showed up for a recovery, but there was already a wrecker with an electric winch hooked up. The e winch did not have the power to bring the stuck rig over the hill. It could be that it was an older or cheap e winch, I'm not sure, but Eric wound up having to hook up his hydraulic winch to pull the guy out. It's just something to think about.
Demri is spot on. SOLDER with an L It always annoyed me when you pronounced it the wrong way. You should try buying fuel here in the U.K. $8.31 a gallon at today's exchange rate! 😁😁 Keep the fun coming.
Quit your complaining, Robby! Here in San Jose, California... $5.90 a gal. at the station down the street from me. And my 24 gal. tank is below 1/4, dammit! I've been watching in hope the price would go down a little... but it only seems to go up. It was around $5.60 a week ago.
So just to understand this correctly, on these silent "t" , so would that be U-aah or Uah.... just wondering. Have a good week and count your blessings amen
I’m excited about this one! I’m Ford through and through but if you do a engine swap a 12 valve would definitely be the way to go especially since you live so close to *Industrial Injection.* 😬 ❤
We started getting AGM Super Starts from Orileys. Optimas are getting too expensive and don't have a great warranty. Also they tend to loose a lot of cranking power in the cold of winter.
Nice looking wrecker, won't the winch work faster if you idle up? Can't wait to see that out on recoveries after some upgrades including all LED lights.
Keep the new off road wrecker sister in the game. Tragic loss of brother who owned the truck and loved off road recoveries. Name her after the brother. Good story line. Just sayin'.
Excited to see that you are finally getting a piece of equipment that is made for the jobs you are doing. There are suggestions in the comments on how to make the hydraulic winch faster. Start there and add electric winches on the back and front. Fix the things that need fixing to make it really dependable and put it to work.
Great video guy's, love the new wrecker. First thing I would do is make sure it runs dependably, put a lift on it ,and really good tires and you'll be able to go most anywhere.
My coworker told me his Ford was much heavier than my Chevy. I said I don't know why they made it so heavy knowing people were going to have to push it.
90s ford 460 7.5 L engine by the look at the top of that. Top notch engine, all the power you could want, but better have a good card since it loves to drink gas :p Favorite memories of my childhood were made in a 91 F350 with that same engine, as a tow truck. Great truck, almost 300k miles before the output shaft in the transmission let go. Still have the truck, hoping I can make it go again someday.
I don't think you can go wrong with a Ford Truck! I had two a 68 F150 and a 88 XLT. I'd keep them both today if I still had them! Til next time, take care, and we'll see you on the next...
I have used the solder sticks in the past and they are great, but i can 100% tell you that they do not like gas. After putting an in tank fuel pump in a jeep i did an ls swap on, i started having isues and had to drop the tank, the rubber was super soft and the solder crumbled.
The Internet needs new hobbies. American English is a mess. The same word is pronounced differently depending on the region of the speaker. "Standard English" is a fantasy. English started as a mashup of five different languages. Then it came to 'merica and met Native Americans, French, Spanish, and many more. Each of these added something to the language. Keep saying solder the way you want to.
Respectfully (that word is slightly less annoying than “Actually”, right? 😊) English already had a ton of French (and Latin) from the Norman Conquest all the way back to 1066. 👍
"sodder" is the only pronunciation I have heard in 30 years of electronics. Never talked to folks from UK because electronics and UK go together like Jaguar wiring.
Same! I think the L is supposed to be silent. Utahns dropping consonants need not apply 😅 Americans sayin’ whatever the heck we want…yeah. It’s that. 😉
Hillbilly...gasoline does not have water in it unless it's gone bad. Most gas does have up to 10% ethanol in it, and over time the ethanol will absorb moisture (water). This is one of the biggest problems with pump gas.
Casey LaDelle will be proud of you 😊 C & C Equipment has some nice older Ford's ,but they also have some Hetts and one set up with a JeerDan wrecker unit ,imagine Robby and Hillbilly in one of them
Robby, on that Ford tow truck, I saw you have manual front hubs. Hopefully you have manual transfer case. . Either way, Both Ford and I suggest that after you take truck out of ,4wd, you back the truck up about ten feet. This action positively releases the spline locks between hub and axle. They will unlock with normal driving but that little effort ensures unlocking and with front wheels in free wheel mode saving your fuel mileage. In my 3 trucks with manual hubs/transfer, I get 3-5 mpg improvement. The shift on fly unis keep the splines engaged so front drive axles are always spinning thus pulling mpg down. Yes I'm a blue oval man. Sorry, but after you get used to using this truck you'll understand why Ford is #,1 seller of trucks for 42 yrs running. Hope to see you at your sponsored event..
I never thought about putting an electric winch on my wrecker. I have had several on my trailers though and they don't seem to last so slow and reliable vs quick and un-reliable.
Your channel seems to becoming, Robby Layton's graveyard of half-finished projects.. Your channel seems to becoming, Robby Layton's graveyard of half-finished projects..
Robby - this video about fixing the fuel pump problems with your Ford truck helped my 16 year old son fix the fuel problem with his 1996 Ford. Thank you for posting the video. We are looking forward to many more videos. Oh, and thanks for letting him see your shop when he stopped by one evening last winter. You are great. Thanks.
EVEN GOOGLE GOT IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Robby got it right!!!!!!! Why do Americans pronounce 'solder' as 'sauder'? Because that's how it was pronounced in the UK at the time that the early settlers came to the USA from the UK. Since then, the UK pronunciation has changed. It's also pronounced 'sodder' or 'sauder' in Canada.
I laughed my butt of the entire time.............I just love the humor in this.....a bit of sarcasm.....but you are a team.......Demri, Robby, Hillbilly and now quiet Robert. Watching the excitement on your faces getting the wrecker to run.....NOW we have to name the Wrecker. "Big Red"
I’m 60 miles North of the US/Canada border. I’m paying $1.66 (Canadian) for regular fuel. When you convert that to US gallons, that’s $6.63 Canadian for a US gallon of fuel. Quitcherbellyachin!
Well, I can’t say much about engines etc, and I’m probably the only one to comment on McD’s. Waaaaay back in the mid 70’s I lived in Oak Harbor WA which was a NAVAL base with lots of military. We had one small burger place called Kow Korner with 25cent burgers and since the cent sign isn’t available I can’t type 25cents accurately. I could write it out $0.25 but the charm of the 25+cent sign is lost again. Anyway you have NO idea how delighted the Navy and Marine Barracks people and families were when McD’s came to the island (Whidbey Island). Yeah, like you guys in Utah welcoming Wendy’s. But Kow Korner was good they just didn’t have the BigMac and I don’t think they even had ice cream then. Maybe Kow Korner did though. And I must’ve missed why you say soLder instead of sod-der for solder. It’s sod-der fer as I k-now. And I keep wondering if they would help me w the sewing machine power cord which electrical tape just doesn’t stay stuck over my sod-der and tape. But I would t ever use a bunch of those …. Hmm I really enjoyed the vid and reading many comments. Yay Hillbilly! And I agree that Lay’nt is having a good time in the shop and in front (leaning in too) of the camera. Great job you guys and the Boss and your kiddos “two”. ❤
Hey Robby i live in Grand Junction i found a yard full of the Toyotas the same body style of yours he has complete and a hole bunch of parts i mean this yard is full of your Toyotas there is no name but i can give you the address of the yard The street it is on is called industrial street IN GRAND JUNCTION COLORADO LOOOOOOK ROBBY PPPLEASE READ I CAN HELP YOU OUT .
I just used my 1979 FORD tow truck. To push a 2022 Chevy truck off the road with a blown engine. Just proves. That it doesn't matter what you drive. All that matters. Is it's DEPENDABLE . Or RELIABLE . It's just that some people just don't know how to work on anything else . I fix them all .
Robby you`re lucky gas is so cheap down there up here in Ontario Canada it`s only $1.62.9 per liter which works out to 3.79 liters per US gallon 1.63times 3.79 = $6.oo per US gallon, if I did my calculations right, correct me if I`m wrong.
