This was in Boston. Considering the band formed at Berklee, the orchestra is not some director pulling out their best people, it's literally the kids at Berklee were invited to come out and played with Dream Theater. This is Dream Theater's best studio album hands down. Every ounce of production on this album is genius, and I'd listen to it all the way through for years every day because it's so aspirational. I actually played the track before this one (HOME) for a recital in college, and you should check that track out. It's got a huge middle eastern groove through most of the song. The ending I had to skip because I couldn't find a drummer who could count the last minute or so of the track (small school, classically trained, not a lot of options lol). Anyway, it really showcases each musician's ability, including the vocalist, and why they are just the best in the world.

Ok tool are actually good song writers, the members of tool dont compete with one another within songs they actually care to be a cohesive unit with one sound, every single tool song has multiple meter changes, tool is actually exciting to listen to, tool also is one of the most original sounding bands on the planet. Now why dream theatre sucks ass. They're terrible song writers, they care more about showing off as individuals than they care about the song itself (this song is a perfect example of that), they're incredibly boring on record and live in concert, james labrie cant sing live to save his own life( there are countless examples of this on RU-vid), they're the biggest "look what I can do" band ever formed. Here's the icing on the cake though......dream theatre has never, and I mean never, sold out an arena/stadium tour in a matter of minutes, dream theatre has never had a record debut or reach number one on the billboard charts. They're just terrible. Should I go on?

Not sure if it's been brought up yet, but there are 108 total meter changes in this piece. It's a super crazy, technical track, but once you've had it rolling through your brain for 20 years like most of us longer-term DT fans, it comes as naturally as riding a bike, lol. I definitely recommend some of the other pieces from this performance if you want to get a better idea of how well the orchestration and choir are implemented. In particular, Illumination Theory is basically their marquee piece from the recent album they were on tour for at the time (this stop being at the Boston Opera House) and if you can sit tight for the full 19-ish minutes then I think you'll be able to to appreciate how this type of arrangement works much better for a band like Dream Theater than say, S&M ever did for Metallica. There's even a section about halfway through where everyone except the orchestra drops out, just how it was written and recorded on the actual album. Thanks for the video, though. I always like seeing people's brains try to figure out what the hell is going on when they hear these particularly complex DT pieces, lol.

Lovely stuff. There are a lot of bands in the last few years done gigs with orchestras, but one I wil recommend to you personally as I think you will dig it is Styx's collaboration with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra Of America. As the name suggests this is some old farts (Styx... I can say that as an old fart as well!)) working with young folks between the ages of 6 and 18 (if memory serves me correctly). It is truly joyous. You can see the admiration of the band for the young folks and the sheer delight of the young ones watching the band run around entertaining whilst playing instruments. I think it is still my favourite band/orchestra shows due to the happiness on everyone's faces along with some wonderful arrangements. You can find some of the songs on You Tube. Whether you decide to do a piece on it is up to you, but you should check it out even if only for your own pleasure. Kind regards.

The amazing thing to me about Dream Theater generally - and this piece in particular - is John Myung! Petrucci is an absolute beast on his guitar - and everyone knows it! What seldom gets recognized is that John Myung doubles Petrucci's guitar riffs - fingerstyle! The pure hard work required to develop a three finger technique that can be played at that speed, with that much "dead-on-the-beat" consistency, for that long??? I don't know *any* other bass player that can do it! For that matter, most couldn't do it with a pick! Keep it up, though - I just recently saw one of your videos, and enjoyed it - as a musician (bass / guitar / vocals), would-be composer/arranger, and general musical fan, I appreciate your views :-) I definitely come from a prog / jazz / edgy-pop style - after looking at the videos you've done so far, I'll probably pop in a suggestion or 50 ... :-P

Hey I was at this show! The conductor is also the composer of the intro to Dream Theaters self titled (False Awakening Suite) and the 3rd movement of their "Illumination Theory" (same album final track). The Orchestra played spectacularly for their part (last 5 tracks of the show). The choir shines best in Illumination Theory, Strange Deja Vu, and Finally Free as the original composition of those is written with vocals. Also the Choir and Orchestra were brought in by the drummer (Mike Mangini) as he used to teach at Berklee! This was an absolute thrill to see live and it was great to see your reaction to it!

I loved that you had a “what the f is happening “ while listening but you had also the clarity to analyze. This song is essentially a medley and the original recording is in their “Metropolis pt2:Scenes From A Memory” album. The whole album is a masterpiece and this piece is a medley of the musical themes of the album. Probably the most complex piece they have written.

this is serious amazingly good music. if I may, I would like to make a recommendation: in the netherlands there lives a bit reclusive a tall, cool and friendly dude, who composes and arranges excellent contemporary Prog Rock/metal. then he summons musicans and vocalists from all over the globe, records with them or they sent their tapes. james labrie from dream theater and floor jansen are amongst them. the result is superamazing. so I suggest to check out "Areon - the day the word breaks down" . the mastermind by the name of arjen lucassen sometimes watches reactions and comments them. have a great weekend. greetings from the krautlands.

This came from a great show, called Breaking the Fourth Wall. It was shot in Boston, with the orchestra and choir coming from Berkeley School of Music, celebrating the band's 30th year. As you may or may not know, Dream Theater got its start at Berkeley in 1985 where Petrucci and Myung (who had been friends already) met Portnoy. I was lucky enough to see Dream Theater in concert from the 1st row just in front of John Myung. In a 3 hour show, my ears didn't pick up on a single mistake! These guys are nothing short of amazing, even to a non-musician such as myself.
