It’s an incredible fish and game processing knife, and does all the camp cooking chores you would want a knife to do. I got mine for less than $20, and it has yet to disappoint me. No, it’s not a wood processing knife, but I have others that are. If you’re a hunter or fisherman, this one is a great budget choice.

I bought one of these several months ago, and put a razor edge on it with a Work Sharp guided sharpening system. The handle had some rough spots, but a sanding sponge smoothed everything right out, finishing with some oil for color and water proofing. It’s such a nice little knife that I’d like to make a better sheath for it. Great value for the money.

On splitting wood, it is sometimes easier to get the cut started, then turn it upside down. Put the end of the blade on a solid surface and hammer on the wood. This forces the wood through the blade, and not the blade through the wood.

It is a great knife. That little "notch" for finger guard is also very helpful for these kind of knives in the dark, to know where your edge is. The scales are held on by weak rivets. They will pop if abused. Easy fix. FWIW - Esee PR4 Leather Pouch Sheath made in USA, fits this knife perfect, much better than factory sheath, $25 from Esee site. Nice Video. Thanks!

Old Hickory....Back in the 50's & 60's every Butcher, Farm House Kitchen, work shop of any sorts, used from gardening to working leather had this knife. Propbably Kephart got his idea from seeing a million OLD HICKORY'S ground down. I'd buy a 10" blade and grind it to a 6" for batonning.... the one you have is more for skinning, gutting, a camp knife. Cheap price, quick to sharpen, light & usable.

I've reground one of the butcher's knives into a Kephart shape, smoothed and rounded the handle, used hot vinegar and mandarin orange slices to force a really cool looking patina on the blade and put it into a modified Kabar sheath. They didn't offer this knife at that time and looking back on the time and effort involved in the hand work (and ignoring the fun factor and satisfaction of doing the hand work) this knife and sheath would be cheaper. The materials for the conversion was nearly the cost of this combo at street price. Sorry I missed the Live cast this week. Got behind on my emails and got the message too late. I did go back and watch the rerun.

I got a Condor Kephart in trade. All told I'm less than 25.00 in the knife. It did come used but I was able to put my own edge on the knife. Shaving sharp, check. My one complaint is that they use the same sheath they use for the Bushlore which I also own. The Bushlore fits great, the Kephart is loose. I fixed that by making my own Kydex sheath for it but I realize not everyone has that option. I dont know if the sheath fits better new or not. But the knife is awesome. It's the perfect bushcraft knife. My backup is the Mora Kansbol.

If you've read his book, Kephart himself would have been very disapproving of using a knife for splitting wood, he used his tools in the roles for which they were designed and built, and was a big proponent of carrying a hatchet or small axe for processing wood down.

Honestly I would rather have a Mora Robust. Safer, more comfortable handle, half the price of the Old Hickory. No it is not full tang, but unless you burn it off it is almost impossible to get the blade on a Mora to break out of the handle. It is my companion knife to my ESSE Junglass which I find more useful for a big knife.

Great review. I own this knife and it is a very useful camp knife. It’s greatest strength is in food prep but it’s a decent carving knife as well. The only thing I disagreed with your review on is using this knife for batoning. I am not against batoning at all but this knife is not suitable for it. The blade is simply too thin and the wood handle rivets will come loose and there is no way to make them snug again. This knife works best when paired with a hatchet or an axe as Kephart himself would have done.

word of caution on old hickory knives.their strength is also their curse, and they can and will rust.if you treat it regularly,it won't rust, but this could be difficult in the bush.this said, they are an easy blade to reprofile to a scandi edge if needed.and are sufficiently stout for bushcrafting needs.and they are cheap.

I bought one of these because the BK 62 is a bit pricey. I'm not disappointed. I use this knife for camping and hunting and so far, it has performed well.

Old Hickory Knives have given value for decades of cutting up in the kitchen. The steel seems easier to hone and sharpen than 'more exotic' steel. Even a simple ceramic rod system works. Kephart came to favor a Marbles' "Woodcraft" model convex grind knife. The knife is illustrated in Camping and Woodcraft. It is about the same size (but very different blade geometry) as the Old Hickory model you demonstrate. I own a Marble's Woodcraft, made in recent times in the original factory. I DO WISH you had demonstrated slicing and butchering with the Old Hickory. The thinner blade should excel at slicing bacon and processing vegetables. The 'spear' tip should be fine for skinning and working around bone structures.

I would have liked to see how sharp it still was after the feather sticks were made. I know it's a $30 knife but it would have been interesting.

I was expecting the cutlery rivets to shear off when you were batoning. I don’t care for those rivets company’s use on knives although I do like Old Hickory knives and it’s not a deal breaker. Enjoyed the vid
