** 2020 Update: Most of these brands have now moved to different batteries and chargers, maybe even different manufacturers altogether. I haven't really looked into it but it's obvious that the new tools and batteries are different to the ones in this video. And maybe different from each other as well! Hope the video might still be useful if you still have some of these old batteries/tools already and trying to work out what works with what but I don't think you can buy any of this stuff new any more. Except the Worx brand itself, which doesn't seem to have changed. Thanks for all the feedback and comments over the past year!
--
I ramble on for about half an hour about how, yes, you can mix and match all the batteries and chargers between many Positec-manufactured 18v and 20v tools, drills, impact drivers etc. Why this works. What the difference is between 18v and 20v (there isn't any). And how exciting all of this is.

I've just bought a "ferrex" nailgun from aldi. Battery looks like this. Thanks for the added info. I believe worx may be rebranded as ferrex for aldi, but they use a crappier battery? The nailgun has no id terminal either, just the volts.

Rockwell and ToolPRO also use the same batteries. You can get a Rockwell 4.0Ah battery with fast charger for $5.00 less than a just a 4.0Ah ToolPRo battery by itself or $30.00 cheaper just for the 4.0Ah battery. The Rockwell battery fits straight into a ToolPRO but you need to snip out 3rd tab from the left to fit the ToolPRO to the Rockwell.

With respect, you seem have missed the fact that the key layout in front of the battery terminals are different from brand to brand. Two of your batteries were the same but the JCB had a different layout. Poss as they were different voltages? However I have 18v macallister batteries which are identical to my guild 18v batteries bar the key ways which are slightly different and prevents interchanging the batteries between the tools - I’m going to remove the ones in the way and try again. One tool has three battery blades, one has two. The 3rd blade is a battery sensing terminal I think. Not sure what this does - though the tool with three has an led capacity readout when you pull the trigger.
@ekens6344
@ekens6344 2 года назад
I did notice the keying but assumed that it was never implemented for anything as all my batteries chargers and tools work together! It's interested you've found that's not always the case. I don't think there is a voltage difference, I did wonder if perhaps it was to be used for differentiating between high and low capacity or high and low output batteries (higher capacity usually also means can supply higher current, charge/discharge quicker) but I don't think that this has been implemented for any brand and plastic notches would be a weird way to do this when it could be done electronically. Perhaps it was just designed to prevent using different brands of batteries and tools together and then not actually implemented for every brand? In terms of contacts going by how other brands work I believe the 3rd contact probably goes to a thermistor in the battery used to detect battery temperature and shut the tool down if overheating, might take apart some of these batteries later to try to see exactly what the 3rd and 4th contact are connected to inside the battery to confirm

@@sawdustandsurvival just cut the plastic tabs off from in front of the terminals on the battery, it works like a combination lock there are 5 places on the battery for plastic tabs and 5 slots on the tool connector that they block off so you cant swap between brands, just whip them all off with a stanley and the batteries work in all the brands Workzone, Worx, Erbauer, Titan, Bauker, MacAllister, Guild, Rockwell, Ferrex and maybe more. there are newer version available now so make sure to get the right ones they are very distinctive in product pictures.

I don't think we have Rockwell in the UK sorry! If you can find a photo of one of their batteries though you should be able to compare with the ones in the video, if the terminals are the same I think it should work. There don't seem to be any electronics that store or read serial or ID numbers from the batteries on these tools, so if they physically fit, they should work. However as others have said some of these brands seem to have moved on to other batteries now, which aren't compatible. May be the same for Rockwell!
