Love the simplicity of the Irish ones, really like that James II Gunmoney! Great video!

Nice little set. I used to believe the James II coins were called "gun money" because in his exile in Ireland, the dethroned King raided and pillaged towns & villages of brass wares to melt down and make fiat coins to incentivise soldiers/weapons. My favourite pre-decimal/post-free-state reverse design is the scilling (shilling) or Fiorin (Florin). The wear is easily identified by it's contours in the animal, plus the attention to finer detail in the die design is embellished with muscular depth in the Bull and gills within the salmon.

Irish coins, especially old ones, can have significant value among collectors. Some of the most valuable include the 1943 Florin, the 1943 Halfcrown, and the 1938 Irish Penny due to their rarity and historical significance.

I have a 1937 Shilling. Am I right in thinking there are only TWO known of the 1938 1d?

Fantastic array of Irish coins from Peter, and a neat 1805 penny and James II shilling. 👍

Cheers Paul, only you could make a video out of such a few coins, delighted to read about the 'Beer token' in the comments below. Yes you did pronounce my name properly. We also used the expression tuppence and tuppence haypknee and tanner for 6d. I believe to differentiate between the old 1d versus the new 1p (we didn't adopt the word new penny) totally different designs were chosen for the reverse by Gabriel Hayes, the 1/2p was an adaption from an illumination in a manuscript in the Cathedral Library Cologne, the 1p, adaption from an illumination in the book of Kells in Trinity College, the 2p, was an adaption of an ornamental bird in the second bible of Charles-the-Bald in the Bibliotheque Paris.

That “beer token” is actually a press set up piece, testing the installation of a new coin press by Cincinnati Incorporated. Instead of running the initial tests with actual coin dies, they used these dies instead. To show that the press was working properly, the coin coming out had to match with a properly stuck example. Presumably if it didn’t match then they bought everyone a beer to make them forget the press wasn’t working! This coin would have been struck testing a newly installed press at the Birmingham mint. From what I can tell, these test coins are rare… not pressed in great numbers. It’s probably not too valuable, except to a numismatist who likes these sorts of oddities. Still, I think it’s the coolest find of the lot!

My scientific answer would be… maybe they are magnetic but just not magnetic ‘enough’ 😂 Great vid as usual. You are so knowledgeable ❤

I'm not a physicist, but I've heard magnetism explained as follows: you can imagine the charged particles of metals as little fans, blowing in all different directions that cancel out each other's magmatism. But a large magnetic charge from outside can point them in the same direction, which creates order in the chaos. The fans blowing in the same direction means one end is now differently charged than the other, which makes this piece of metal magnetic in itself. Some metals like copper and zinc aren't really affected by magnets. Some metals stay magnetic for a long time, that's what they make magnets out of. And some metals like iron or nickel only stay magnetised for as long as another magnet is near. The presence of non-magnetisable particles within an alloy interrupts the neat order of the pointed fans. And with the order disturbed the metal isn't magnetised. This is why stainless steel with up to 90% iron isn't magnetic and cupro-nickel (a bunch of copper with some nickel) isn't either.

Peter needs to know it's James II (the Second), not James 11 (the Eleventh), there are NO numbers in Roman Numerals. Many people make this mistake.

A nice collection Peter has sent you. I was watching whilst setting up to record the video of todays auction win, which included a couple of Irish pre-decimal bits, including a 1946 3 Pingine. It also contained a UK1953 1d, did you get anywhere with your FOI request?

Hi Craig, I don't know of an 1822 farthing with an error on a 2 (Is it the first or second 2?) If you email me a close up photo then I will include it in a future video and see what people think. All the best Paul
