From a guy who has done many of these upgrades, going from an old spinning HDD to a solid state drive is literally a night vs day difference. And SSDs, for the most part, tend to be much more reliable than older drives.
Also you can use Cristall HD video accelerator instead standart wifi in mini-pcie slot, if you are able to load whitelist-free BIOS. This tested on CQ-71 (laptop from this video).
@@nunyobiz7970 There're indeed more reliable, but not " WAAYYY" more reliable as you like to claim. Hard drives that are treated well can last a very long time, heck my oldest one that I still have running 24/7 is more than 13 years old (a 640GB drive).
When I do a laptop / Notebook upgrade - I use the fastest speed and highest capacity ram that the system can use and as for the ssd ; get one with the capacity you need / want within your budget.
@@warior1195 Hello - From what I was able to look up - this laptop can have up to a maximum of 8-gb DDR3-SDRAM ( 2x SO-DIMM ). Memory speed of 1333 MHz. So you can get a 2 x 4gb 1333mh ddr3-sdram ( SoDimm ) kit - giving you a maximum of 8-gb ram.
@@johnpaulbacon8320 what about an acer sf315-52-52yn it says I'm running 2400mhz on factory 8gb ram I want to go to 32 gb ram can I use a 3200mhz speed ram? Not sure what it can go up to 2666 3200 or just stay with 2400. Thanks!
My son just upgraded my very slow 6 year old Lenovo ideapad L340 PC and it’s like new. Upgraded from 1tb hdd to 500gb nvme SSD, from 8gb ram to 16gb ram and from windows 10 to windows 11. It already had a i5 cpu and it’s much faster. I’m so loving it. The cost was about $98 total for the ram and SSD, windows 11 upgrade was a free download.
Thanks for the video I updated my 12-year-old Acer laptop with a 500gb SSD drive 8 gigs of ram from 4 and a clean install of Windows 10 home edition what a difference! Now it's good for another few years until end-of-life of Windows 10
Same type of laptop here, with a T4200 (2x2Ghz), SSD and 4GB ram. Running with Linux Mint works great for web browsing, office and 720/1080p video viewing.
I've done the same thing to several systems and agree that it is a definite improvement. One change I have found useful is using faster memory as in using 800 MHZ DRAM instead of 666 MHZ DRAM. It also improves the video quality in systems using shared memory by reducing latency.
Did the same on an old toshiba satellite pro. Added 4gb of ram, now 8gb total, and a 1tb ssd from crucial. These gave a new life to it. Booting now is under 30s. It never was so fast.
All the old toshiba satellite pro laptops that I have seen booting on RU-vid with an SSD still took close to 50 seconds to reach the desktop, so I think you're full of shit.
Duablo 2 Khalim’s relics. Khalim’s heart enables the ⚠️ triangle at 6 and 5%. His eye heated up the cells, actually did nothing. His brain cooled down the + and - side pairs, left the middle memory effected, with less temperature, and the brain reduced fan speed. His heart enabled all cells to be cooler, and the triangle icon appeared instead of the x at 7,6,5 %. The whole laptop became a little bit cooler. Also, the brain enabled fan test during startup. I didn’t find the flail yet. To do this permanent fix, you have to find the relics on battery using power saving mode. The laptop will be better on ac , too.
Great info that many can benefit from! I have maxed out the RAM that the motherboard supports on a Toshiba satellite A305 laptop (Manufactured in 2007), put an SSD in it, and even added a Bluetooth thumb to it and it now has that working on it also. It actually has been running fine with Windows 11 on it (on of course 'unsupported' hardware) for over a year already. It's a usable device in 2023!
hey bro i am having same laptop as u and thinking of upgrading it as i dont have money to buy a new one can u please provide ur any social media i need to talk to u
It runs good. It’s maximum speed is 100mps, and is usually at about 50-60% of it’s maximum 4G RAM, but good with 2 or 3 tabs open. I put Windows 11 pro on it about two years ago. Of course not as snappy as my newer machines, but i try downloads on it experimentally before downloading it on the other (assure there’s no spyware, etc.)…. It’s amazing when you can keep an old 17 year old laptop usable in today’s technology. I mean, … this is not like keeping an old ‘57 chevy running. I know eventually i won’t be able to keep it going ( like if win 12 says it’s minimum require ment is 8G RAM for example). Anyway, for now…these days it runs windows 11 Pro pretty good on it.@@ChristianCercizi
For the operating system I would actually recommend Windows 10 LTSC. The reason why I chose this is kind of hard to explain, so I’ll try and explain it the best I can. Normal windows 10 includes a lot of crap that most people won’t use on a daily basis or at all, for example 3-D viewer, Cortana, and a lot more. So LTSC gets rid of all those unnecessary apps. Not only that but the background processes are reduced, increasing the performance even for an SSD.
@@aaronjohn786 basically LTSC stands for long-term servicing channel. LTSC gives you support for Windows 10 until 2027 and removes a lot of the Microsoft bloatware. it also removes features like Gamebar, and a few other features. So if you’re going to try gaming on that version of windows 10, I would highly recommend having a separate version of Windows 10 for that, because if you are gaming with something that requires the game bar you’re gonna get nagging notifications about it missing. However if you download IOT enterprise you’re gonna get supported Windows 10 until 2030, however I think the same features are removed.
My cluttered up 8 year old windows installation is ready to use after about 6 minutes after powering on, so 1:28 is absolutely not bad for an old girl like this, especially with just 1gb of ram, its actually a miracle 😀
That's cool you were able to get drivers to work. I have one really old laptop and it's okay with early builds of Win 10 but I can't update date it because the latest drivers were for Vista.
@@pauloalmeida2294 The problem is somewhere along the line an update broke driver compatibility. For example I install an early build of Win 10, get the drivers installed and clear out issues in device manager. Everything works as expected. Then you start updating and after one of the those updates things start breaking. Like the screen flashes, stuff doesn't load, etc. I guess it's pretty common on older hardware that never got driver updates.
Nice video. Though I'd like to add in your case I think you'd most certainly wanna consider changing the cooling, and also while at it, you could also really use a CPU upgrade too. A Core 2 duo T8300 is guarnteed to work and is like 10 bucks and not T9300 or T9500 overpriced, but if somehow you are lucky you get a GM45 Northbridge (check CPUZ), then you are open to faster and cheaper Core 2 duo P8800, T9550, T9600 as well!
@@endlesstech_official Yup I see the point. Though the celeron is so slow itself that T8300 is easily 4x as fast and for just 10 bucks. But yeah to give it the fullest leash of new life you gotta do that and change thermal paste, and id even open the lcd bezel and lubricate + tighten hinges. Hinges on this laptop are decent when screws are tight but when not they can be self-destructive
Moreover this laptop should work with up to 8GB of RAM, but the 4gb sticks are overpriced and there is a small chance you may have a bios glitch with 8gb of ram on these things if you have GL40 chipset
From what I remember I think this laptop is from the Vista era. Even the specifications back then were laughing as Vista recommended 1.5 GB of RAM for it to run smoothly yet lots of manufacturers back then were shipping Vista machines with 1GB RAM.
Was bored one day and randomly decided to upgrade my old 2012 laptop that was just collecting dust. Went from a pentium to an i7, upgraded the ram from 4gb to 8gb and replaced the hdd with an ssd. After gaining a new breath of life, it became monumentally more usable, it pretty much is a different computer, and the upgrades were only $63
Did this plus some to an HP Probook 4430s not too long ago. It turns 13 years old this May and had 8 gb of ram, an Intel i5, and the original HDD. Boot time almost identical, and took a total of 6.5 minutes to get up to full operating speed (i.e being able to connect to internet and open Google) Replaced the HDD with an SSD ($45), swapped the i5 for an i7 ($15 new on Aliexpress), did 16 gb of DDR3 Ram (2x8 gb, $17), a new bluetooth card to replace the original wifi card and restore bluetooth capabilities ($6), and a wireless wifi dongle ($9). My only griefs are that running Windows 10 kills the fingerprint scanner and the screen bright/dim keys because they were only supported on Windows 7. Hardly an issue, but still sad that I lost them. Bluetooth was also lost in the Win 10 transition, but I was able to remedy that and still gain faster wifi speed.
If you install Windows 7, your Laptop's processor Life will also increase because in Win7 CPU meter goes to 00 when put in idle rather than the comparisons to other operating system.
I upgraded my old second generation i7 Asus laptop from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD years ago. It still runs practically everything I need on Windows 10 without any problems. (except games)
I myself had this a Vista machine. Had a heating problems if I remember. The little fan didn't have enough intake to cool itself. There was a fix buuuut back then it involved a Dremel I believe. Was an ok machine if you where patient. Lol
I'm currently trying to fix up my old hp probook I used for school (they didnt give it to me, but it was lost for damn near 8 years until i just found it recently.), maybe i'll consider an ssd upgrade, i already have 8gb of ram so it should be a good upgrade. On a side note, maybe its just nostalgia but I really miss the fatter form factor of old laptops. plus I could use a disc drive.
For those who didn't know what laptop this is: This is the Compaq CQ61 (or HP G61 in Intel variant). This is an upgradable laptop, you can upgrade its CPU, storage and RAM, GPU might be also upgradable (idk, haven't tested the GPU one before). I also have these at home but I stopped using it because the power button melted. (I'm playing GTA San Andreas and GTA 4, but after a few days, it melted because i played too much)
Hey I used to own a similar compaq laptop back in 2013-15. Mine was higher spec tho, it was a pentium t4300, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd and a super fast nvidia g103m graphics card.
I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 15, Pentium Silver laptop from a 500GB spinning disk to a dual-SSD configuration (500GB M.2 NVMe for OS and certain media files + 1TB 2.5" SATA for other media files, games and mass storage).
True, but a lot of people using laptops for school can't use Linux, because their school requires Windows stuff. If you can use Linux, old Core 2's are still very usable.
I carried my old laptop to the airport and the security asked me to switch it on. After a few minutes it still couldn't boot so the security just gave up.😂It's weird and rude for the security to do so but his expression was funny.
5:11 If the graphics uses the the sodimm, at least for a part, maybe installing 32 bit operating system would be a better idea. In windows 10 maybe, sins it can see 3,5 GB of ram instead of the 3 GB XP only can detect, and is lighter then the 64 bit, it anyhow could work faster. And the leftover ram, the graphics card maybe able to use, depending on the system.
@@endlesstech_official Ok just wondering you don't have to if you don't feel like it I'm just glad I'm not the only person who wants to upgrade an old laptop. I gave new life to my 2011 Intel i3-2310M Notebook with a Addlink 256 GB SSD and 4GB DDR3 Ram, everything works great and I Don't need to buy a new device.
@@ABCDEFart Nope, but for precaution you can change your SSD every 5 year (only if you are really paranoic). Actually (well-known brands) SSD's are very affordable and reliable, and in case of failure, the difference between magnetic HDD and SSD is that in HDD you can recover data easily than SSD, but the best combination is to save important data in HDD and run operating system, programs and games in a SSD. And there are a lot of software tools with you can check the health of your SSD, so you can decide when is time to replace it.
For a better comparison, just clone the original hard drive to the SSD. That way the config, updates etc will be identical and show you the true performance boost.
I have a hp gaming notebook with gtx 950m 4gb 8gb ram 1tb hdd and 128gb ssd i5 6 gen 4 core and can play games medium settings very well for a old laptop
What version BIOS does this laptop have? Manufacturer of Old laptop like my 2011 version Dell Latitude e5420 has not upgraded its BIOS after 2013, so my laptop does not even recognise SSD drive. I was unable to replace my HDD with SSD as it is not recognised, but I was able to upgrade my RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB and subsequently to 16 GB. My laptop boots up slowly, in about 4 minutes, but it works on windows 10 reasonably fast after booting. That when Dell specifically mentions that this laptop is not supported for Windows 10.
