We went on a nice family hike to an old mine site behind Peachland. The Gladstone mine (AKA Camp Hewitt) is an old gold mine from just before the turn of the last century. Well over 100 years old. This old mine is still very visible and has been a popular hiking destination behind Peachland for many years. This is one of many old gold mines in the area that have turned into popular hikes in the Okanagan valley.
We grabbed a few test samples from the mine dumps to take back and gold pan out in a creek and see if we could find any gold that has weathered out. Unfortunately we did not find any gold in our small samples. Many old gold mines in bc have mine dumps that still hold free milled gold.
The City of Peachland and the local hiking clubs have created a well signed and well maintained hiking trail, "The Gladstone Trail" to the area.
