Old mine, looking for gold. 100+ year old Gladstone mine. (Peachland)

We went on a nice family hike to an old mine site behind Peachland. The Gladstone mine (AKA Camp Hewitt) is an old gold mine from just before the turn of the last century. Well over 100 years old. This old mine is still very visible and has been a popular hiking destination behind Peachland for many years. This is one of many old gold mines in the area that have turned into popular hikes in the Okanagan valley.
We grabbed a few test samples from the mine dumps to take back and gold pan out in a creek and see if we could find any gold that has weathered out. Unfortunately we did not find any gold in our small samples.Many old gold mines in bc have mine dumps that still hold free milled gold.
The City of Peachland and the local hiking clubs have created a well signed and well maintained hiking trail, "The Gladstone Trail" to the area.
This video is produced by Dan Hurd, Prospector, Miner, Teacher and RU-vidr, as part of his RU-vid channel based on educational videos about gold mining, gold panning, prospecting, rock hounding, and mineral collecting.

Looked like a nice day out hiking and exploring a mine. Well you never know if you don't check for gold, now you know. One time I was exploring a cave and when I crawled into it I crawled right in on a sleeping grey fox and I sure am glad that I didn't wake him up, that could have been ugly, I crawled back out very quickly and quietly.

The old workings are attributed to the Camp Hewitt Mining and Development Company which was active in this area during 1896-99. The "shaft" exposes several small, near-vertical shears striking 40 degrees, and irregular quartz veining in and adjacent to the slips. The veining contains some pyrite (iron) and a trace of galena (lead) and sphalerite (zinc), as well as limonite (iron), malachite (copper) and azurite (copper) staining. The "tunnel" exposes an irregular, thin quartz vein striking easterly and dipping at 70-75 degrees to the north. No primary minerals are in this vein but limonite and malachite stains were seen. This was never really a producer but more an exploration effort following weak mineralization in the veins. This type of mineralization is roughly associated and periferal to the events that created the Brenda mine 20 kms to the west. The Brenda mine began production in early 1970 with 160,556,700 tonnes grading 0.183 per cent copper and 0.049 per cent molybdenum. The mine officially closed June 8, 1990. Now, THAT was a mine.

Hand pick the big ones early, or they'll obstruct the pan. Slightly angle the pan and then tap it. Gold moves differently. Get yourself a handheld rock crusher for those quartz pieces, I would. Or potentially make one out of a chunky piece of steel pipe and a heavy ball bearing.

You need to crush your material finer and more consistent. You are not getting enough surface area on your crushed rocks, therefore the fine gold that may have been in there was lost within the bigger chunks.

Thanks for the feedback
@castlehill6717
