I prefer to call this Heritage style and I love it. It’s classic Ralph Lauren, but that, my old favorite, brand has been cheapening their quality a lot, especially in fabrics. I wanted a brown pleated midi from there, but it was $400 and all polyester (it quickly went to half-price, no one else wanted to pay that either). I found a dupe for about $30 - if it must be polyester (I couldn’t find that dark brown in silk anywhere), I’m not paying silk prices for it. I’m loving Banana Republic for this Heritage style, its high-quality fabrics and construction, great fit and cuts, and no sweaty polyester or acrylic!
It seems every compnay is cheaping their products. But yeah, heritage style works more especially since thee days you have younger 'old money' that are being a trendy and flashy. Many celebs that ppl think are new money sometimes come from old families that got them into the industry in the first place, but they don't always like making it known.
I second the Banana Republic new/old direction! It was also rolling down the hill with the quality and designs prior their rejuvenation a year ago. I couldn't be happier with their current styles and fabrics!
Interestingly enough, vintage shopping in small town is the best way to get hold of affordable ' classic pieces, whether its considered old money,' trendy look or not. ps. my grandmother gave me her Lora Piana shoes before she passed away and did not know much about it beyond the sentimental memories it carried for me. I guess I can rock them now.
The one thing about these brands is that the products they make are absolutely superb and rich people pay more for the best quality -- and then they will wear these same clothes for decades. They don't "replace" things like a lot of us do because they buy quality and it doesn't wear out. Highest quality, made to last, best quality fabrics. Go to an "old money" home and you will probably feel the decor is outdated. They do the same with their decor, that's why. They buy all this super high quality, high end furnishings and top of the line finishes, and that is what they live with. Maybe this is dark paneling, or marble, or heavy drapes (made from silk) or whatever. They don't buy junk stuff, so they keep it a long time.
When I think of old money, I think of Ralph Lauren, Nautica, and Polo. Here in the South, old money just looked sophisticated without looking over done. Love the video 🤩
@@Mmeme2023 haha so that people can afford~ a sweatshirt priced at $80 to me was cheap enough until I came to the States seeing people complain about overpricing a jacket at 150😂. I mean….. 150 is a bargain!! So I don’t see most of the people can afford when the factory moved to the States😂
To me Ralph Lauren is not old money it's very logo-driven. He does revive a lot of the old money aesthetic but he does so in quite a mannered way, he stylises it. I'm not really a RL fan but I can see the attraction. He basically does preppy and he does a kind of 19th century revival in riding clothes and floaty white women's dresses and blouses.
Welcome to the paesan club! I’m 50% Italians and I was raised in a big Italian family. I love Italian brands, especially Salvatore Ferragamo another old money brand. Thanks for a great presentation.
LorO Piana...not Lora. 😄 Brooks Bros. (also old money , but in a different way) makes some wonderful coats using Loro Piana wool and cashmere. Its a much more affordable option that still provides excellent quality and timeless style.
I really loved your comment about Turkish - Italian DNA. Being a Greek archaeologist I can probaboy explain this: since the 8th century BC many Greeks/Ionians left the East coast of the Aegean sea and founded colonies in South Italy and Sicily. From then on, people were comng and going between the mother cities (now in Turkey) and the western colonies in Italy (and Spain). This may explain why your family's DNA points to the west... you are an Ionian lady.
LOL I've got similar thing with over 25% French. I know where it comes from, one grandmother plus my mother born in Paris. But also having 2x Welsh grandparents and the thing is there was close contact with trading fishing etc with the people in Brittany and the Welsh. So that's got French overlay there on top. It's just in me in an indefinable way. lol!
May I suggest other old money labels: Twin-Set, Luisa Spagnoli, Bogner (german firma), Ermenegildo Zegna, Serapian (handbags and suitcases). I'am Italian so trust me!
I can't afford to buy "old money" brands so thrifting is my go to. I actually found a pair of glitter jimmy choos at the thrift store for 5 dollars! LOL
What's funny is the way people think old money has a look. I feel it depends on where you are from. In my early 20's (I'm 40 now), I loved Max Mara for classic pieces. The only thing I knew about it was that it had a nice classic look that I could keep forever. Well, the RTW line. I did/do love fashion but I'm an eclectic type of girl. Maybe it's because all I hear about is Chanel, Hermes and LV that at this point I see people mostly looking alike. 🤷🏿 I just hope people wear what they love label or not and go for great quality fabrics. Side note...there are so many brands out there that serves top quality without ripping all the money out of your accounts. Yes it will cost more than the trending sites but your pieces will last forever.
Old money has everything to do with where you’re from, your heritage, and who you know. You can’t fake it or imitate it with clothing. It varies so much based on where you are.
Yeah, you do things that the old money folks do but if you are not one you can't become one unless you marry into it. You can buy similar brands they buy and such but wearing the same brands or clothes doesn't make you that. Not all old money is mega rich either.
I absolutely love my Loro Piana sweater & I only paid $65 for it. P.S. just picked up the best Max Mara dress for $15. No shame to my thrifting game. Unpopular opinion: Thanks to the Kardashians, Birkins are so felt up (basic) now. Still love my Hermes pumps tho.
Just forgot to add that those brands are very expensive but should be use as an inspiration to buy quality pieces with classical designs at a more affordable prices. Ex. The Max Mara Camel coat is a wardrobe basic (many brands have similar options) or the Loro Piana cashmere scarfs...cashmere is what this brand is well known for.
Great video. As I get older, I tend to go for a minimalist yet great quality items. Would you be kind enough to share the details of your peach wallpaper please?
Brunello is my favorite always has been always will be ❤❤ we are not old money but my parents introduced us to them and loro piana when we were young. We were never logo people, always subtle 🤷🏻♀️
Loved this video, so interesting and on point, thank you! I have some of my Mama's blazers, her jewelry and photos of her all glam, she loved dressing up to go to lunch or family/friends gatherings. It was a fashion show and I loved it! Her blazers are mostly black or black with a subtle cream/white pattern and of course her favorite color red. I haven't worn any of them, it's too hard right now. And the brooches oh my gosh so unique as well as her earrings. My Dad bought her a pearl necklace and earrings, those are so special and the ring my Grandfather gave my Mom when she was 18 years old, priceless. Big hugs to you and happy weekend, this video brought out a lot of memories for me, wow lol!
If I was aiming for a true old money aesthetic, I would have custom clothes made and avoid looking off the shelf. After that, I would look for unique, one of a kind designer pieces and then fill in with tailored classic brands. But looking blue blood is inherent--you have it or you don't. Today's old money included old timey new money without any lineage.
Loro loafers🤷🏾♂️…I just don’t get it. IMO they’re not at all visually appealing, but I’ve heard they’re comfortable. S/N: I’m waiting for a penny loafer trend to become popular again. Grace Kelly at the end of REAR WINDOW when she’s lounging in her classic button-up, cuffed jeans, and penny loafers reading Harper’s Bazaar is rent free on my brain on a daily basis.
@@mickeyremich3039 Main reason I’m about to order mines now. Once the trend becomes a thing, issa wrap! You spoke facts when you said the people are gonna gravitate towards the sleeker loafers and not so much the chunky ones anymore.
Hello! Can you please let me know who the lady with the furcoat and the Chanel bag is? I have the same model that belonged to my grandma. I had never seen it anywhere and I was just curious to know. Thank you and great video!.
I don't know why, but lately I can't stand any logos even if they're small. They look tacky to me and they date the outfit, same with trendy patterns. If you look at Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy from the 90's, she still looks fashionable today. She popularized the "no make up" make up look as well. I think today everything so overdone in a "look at me" kind of way and people are starting to get sick of it, craving a more natural, subtle look where the quality speaks louder
I believe Chanel started in the 1960’s….it was my favorite ( I was in my 20’s)….Jackie Kennedy wore a lot of Chanel….It became “ old lady” when you were young….but the little cropped jackets we’re wearing today….are Chanel-like. I wish I had saved my clothes from the 80’s too!
Absolutely wonderful video. I always love luxurious fashion brands that timeless. Always was drawn to them. Thanks for sharing this topic . Please stay safe. 💪🏾❤️
I think there is a confusion as to what old money is. You either born in it or you are not. You might be able to marry into it and you kids have some old money lineage through your old money spouse, but you can't just become old money by wearing clothes and doing certain things. And not all old money is mega rich, you have a lot of new money that are wealthier than many old money folks. They get by mainly on privileges and being in power positions and countries being nostalgic to them because of their ancestors. Some money that some old money have are dwindling if it's what has been earned years ago and the business or the industry is no longer booming. Though you do still have many who pivot with the changing times and still stay on top. but you have loads of millionaires and billionaires now that are first generation wealthy and not coming from old money. Sometimes old money marry those folks to stay rich if they own money is sinking.
I can’t believe I’m wearing the unknown brands! 😂 I’m wearing a Lisa Yang cashmere top and Gabriela Hearst pants right now! OMG I wish you could see what I’m wearing right now because it’s too funny!!! Gabriela Hearst is one of my favorite brands! My favorite items in my wardrobe are by her and yes the cashmere and wool are amazing! My favorite are the flare pants I’m wearing right now, they are called the Rhein Pant and are 100% Merino Wool with a silk lining! So comfortable! I highly recommend! ❤
For your knowledge: in the 17 century in Istambul the italian and greek comunity was quite big. The Italian , mostly from Venice, where acting as bankers. It was also an entire greek neighborhood, Fanar.
Hey! I just found your channel :) I would love to know what you think about Casablanca. I don't know anything about this brand nor do I hear anyone talking about them, but I discovered Casablanca on my own and it was love at first sight and I've been hauling like crazy, the house is so expensive, but supposedly they are trying to be Hermes for Gen Z. Do you think it's an upcoming new money brand?
Old Money families don’t all have quiet taste (see: The Gettys), and New Money families don’t all have loud taste (see: Kate Middleton). Most of the old money people I’ve known were miserly and would balk at carrying a purse that costs more than a used car, even though they were on the Forbes list.
Well, teenagers always consider what the adult women of the day are wearing to be “old lady”. It’s as adults that we come to appreciate and value the stellar quality of these brands, and their classic styling. Even if I could afford it, I don’t think I would want to spend that much on these ultra-luxury brands, but I will spend quite a bit more than fast-fashion prices for the best fabrics. I live in one of the wealthiest, and most highly-educated, counties in the US, and the few very rich I’ve known here dress down completely, not wanting to stand out too much (except for their million-dollar cars, apparently). They wear mostly jeans and black gym clothes, like most others here, neither of which I like. Black or gray gym wear, or anything Patagonia, is the local uniform, but I won’t conform to it, my excuse is “I’m older, I can wear what I like” (age 62, California).
I love this topic and I have experienced it. I didn’t understand it until I started dating a Rockefeller and when I went into that world well let’s just say …..now I SEE😂!
Why do you think people are drawn to this aesthetic right now? I’ve wondered this. I was thinking that we’ve become so casual and sloppy after Covid times that “well dressed” look has become appealing. What do you think?
I've been wondering the same thing. My theory is as you say, during covid people became accustomed to lounging around at home in leggings, sweats and pyjamas. Now people want to look put together and look good but still be comfortable. Understated linen, cashmere and subtle tailoring along with loafers are the perfect solution. I'm here for it.
I wonder if it’s a reaction to off the rails fast fashion as well. Many people feel guilty about their overconsumption and rightfully so, so it makes sense to me that they’re getting more interested in top quality fabrics in timeless styles.
It"s easy if you dress like Her Late Majesty, QEII; Catherine, POW; Sophie DOE; and Anne, The Princess Royal. Don't dress tacky like the Yacht Granny. I absolutely knew nothing about designer brands until about six months ago.
Me: 29 with LP shoes, MaxMara trousers and a Brunello Cuccinelle top looking like an old woman Honestly, I simply like quality and sophistication and I just love these brands BECAUSE of quality and sophistication. I'm not a logo-girl, that's not my alley - I have a Chanel and I rarely use it due to the CC. I rather use my Hibourama bag.
I’ve bought the loro piana loafers… everyone said how comfortable they are…. But I’ve have not found this is the case for me. I feel like they rip the sides of my feet and I can barely wear them!!! Maybe half an hour tops! Biggest waste of money ever! I’ve also started to really like ferragamo shoes. Especially the ballet shoes. I think they look more elegant than the Chanel ballet flaps
Lacoste is American Prep. Old Money is really aristocracy or WASP fashion but 80s Prep is moreso what people mean, like Gossip Girl instead of Kate Middleton. Lacoste watches are one of the cheapest designer watches and look uber prep.
You do need money to do Hermes right though, otherwise you’re not going to be able to appreciate the brand fully with the ready to wear and decor, and just chase bags (likely resale). I don’t know - unlike Chanel, I think hermes as a fashion house has more history and has remained true to their equestrian roots throughout all of their lines, where Chanel is just reimagined by Karl Lagerfeld, not that you want to remember the messy Chanel past
I wonder will these TikTok old money vibe brands be less “old money” when they get popular? Haha 100 Capri drag is so funny. There is so many things I genuinely like but these guys put me off (I’m a guy btw). I got Tods that I fell in love with and took me 2 years to wear them & stop caring about that association
I am 48% Italian 😂so just like you the culture, the vibe, the language had always appealed to me. When I took the test I was like omg now it all makes so much sense¡ 😅Thank u for sharing that¡
Just a point about Italy....live in the near in the Alps and traveled 10000 Times to Milan, Florence and actually all Italy etc. In general its the tourists who dress that way...the italians dress pretty simple and definetely not stylish or expensive. If you in smaller italian Citys you will see this. In Milano or Verona you will see tourists all over the World. Just watch Videos on RU-vid they ask people how much their Outfit costs...99% are from all over the world, but not Italy... Same with Paris...
