She asked him to be that monster again and you can see in his eyes when he looks back at her just how much he doesn't want to return to that place in his mind after having come so far

This is such a perfect scene, Maggie being absolutely terrified and also reliefed that he is on her side, all the while she is watching negan bringing back his old self again to save them, the ptsd must've been HUGE for her here, sometimes all you need is the old monster to save you, let's just hope negan can control it
@@AzureRadio "old habits die hard", you always have to control your demons to keep them in check, and when the situation requires it you let them out, but the more you let them out, the risk of returning to your old self becomes bigger and bigger, it's all about control
NEGAN, at this point is using the mask to get what he needs for the people around em, anytime its been something thats just for him, he talks it out now. But for maggie? He'd use the mask again to get her son back. But you can see it on his face he hates it.
Yeah, but it also showed something about the character. It showed he knew what he was about to do and was relishing the thought. That grin and swagger. I believe he was enjoying thinking of what he was gonna do next.

@@jollyquinn430 I think his redemption arc is believable. It's just that it's harder for people to accept because this is who they think he is at nature. Truth is likely that he's done this for a reason and used it as an excuse to have some of his old fashioned fun.
@@jollyquinn430there was nothing unbelievable about his "redemption" arc especially since JDM doesn't even acknowledge it as a redemption but atonement so it just sounds like you didn't pay attention since it was pretty well written I mean it was literally the best arc in the final seasons alongside the whisperers and it is the most highly rated aspect of that part of the story by the majority of the fanbase 🤷
Arguably it comes across as sadistic because he inserts humour. But if a protagonist were to do it humourless, and we know the backstory, it comes across far more justified.
I thought she looked a little turned on by Negan’s brutality. But I haven’t been watching the show for a few years and don’t know how her character has developed. I should probably stop watching spoilers.
Maggie was scared as fuck, at that moment she saw the return of the man who killed her husband and it was so satisfying to watch l’m not gonna lie, and holy shit what another great episode!

I think Maggie feels a little unsure on how to feel as she has been a victim of negans brutal methods but because of it it saved their lives I love the direction this is going because Maggie cannot forgive or forget but I feel like this spin off will give her/us closer with Glenn's death
Negan has done so well being a better person and overall human being by locking away his psychopathic side in a cage. But it's nice to see that, when it's neccessary, he opens that cage and is like "hey. Wanna stretch your legs for a couple minutes?"
He was always like this. He mentioned it multiple times, even in this series. Almost everything he was blamed for in TWD was committed by Simon, who he found out about and dealt with. He has strict morals but believes people need to see consequences

Negan and maggie in the bathroom. "I'm only a monster when i have to be." I love how Maggie witnessed pigeon ladies death being the trigger to this. Really puts things into perspective for her
Ok I was on the fence about watching this show. But this scene right here has sold me on it. The writers are letting Negan be Negan again and I am all for it.
@@d-_-b8558bro there was like a 5 year time jump. He ain't gonna be the same character. I didn't watch the new episode so idk if we find out about Annie n their kid, but him losin them would make sense as to why he is the way he is, just like at the start of the outbreak with him losin Lucille
@@d-_-b8558 Not really, Negans development is still there but considering what they're dealing with, Negan has to resort to been a bit more brutal again and there has been a time jump between the main shows finale and dead city so who knows what he's had to deal with since then Plus once he looks at Maggie, you see the old Negan facade drop instantly and maybe he's fully realising that he can't keep justifying it. He did apologise on the main show to Maggie for what he did but he's always excused his actions saying he did what he had to do and that never really changed
I loved this scene. Part of me thought he was gonna say, "Hell, it won't be a rainstorm. It won't even be a thunderstorm. It'll be a goddamn shitstorm!" But the hurricane works just as nicely.
I love the fact that negan insults them and makes a joke out of them and then makes a joke before slicing his throat and scaring them and then just walks away showing them who they are messing with
She's been bullying him for so long since S9, and when Negan showed her a fracture of what he's really capable of, she just frozed in fear and realized that Negan was still the man who bashed Glenn's head like a summer watermaelon the only difference now is he's on her side saving her son.
@@mistergenin21 That isn't at all what happened. Yes there was PTSD, but she was conflicted because he wasn't lying. He did what he did to protect his people and he didn't like it. He did this to protect her (and the tribe) from the attackers. She hated him for what he did but now is being protected by the EXACT same show of force used when he killed Glenn. They don't have numbers so you gotta show them a monster
@AzureRadio Just watched the show last night, and it was really a powerful line when Negan said that I was only a monster when I absolutely had to be to put on a show to protect my people. I get your point of view, and I totally agreed on what you said.
This scene is so HUGE.. Maggie was told he was only a monster when he needed to protect his people. You can see she realizes how it is to be on his side while still being in fear off who he can be. DAMN🔥
incredible episode. love that Negan can tap into his old self when needed. You can see he didnt like doing it at the end when he passes maggie. incredible show.
I noticed that too, he didn't want to show her that side of him but I feel like he didn't even want to do all that but just merely a show of a force to be reckoned with.
It reminds me of a feudal lord in Spain who did horrible violent stuff and then, through his servant, do a lot of charity because he felt bad about it. Sometimes you need to keep people in check through violence and fear, but you don't have to enjoy it
the beginning and ending shots of this reel are phenomenal. Starting with Negan and a sadistic smile coming through the shadows, knowing exactly what he's about to do. Relishing the thought of being "that guy" once again. And as soon as it's over, he looks back at Maggie to make sure she's ok. Almost regretting that he'd done it. He's come so far, dude. JDM is an incredible actor and the perfect pick for Negan.
