What an extraordinary film. I was born in May Bank in 1960 and remember nearly everything shown here except the railway. The municipal hall was a sad loss. I have been living in Malta for 15 years now. The last time I went back was 2018 and it was quite sad to see the state of the town. I gather most of the shops are closed now. The Council has a lot to answer for.
So true. I believe it was also called the Municipal Hall. My Mum told me about the public outcry at the time. When you consider the steel & glass modernist building that replaced it & which had to be renovated a few times over the years as it was prone to structural defects, I can only strongly echo your comment. A huge loss to Newcastle-u-Lyme to this day. Fine architecture demolished due to bureaucratic short-sightedness & stupidity.
Thanks for posting this👍The sixties was a time for architectural vandalism. It's heartbreaking to see how beautiful the Municipal Hall was inside and out. How was this allowed!!
Thanks for this, as someone born in this century, all I know is the modern Newcastle. Seems like back then there was much more of a town feel to it, like it was it’s own place and not just a few shops outside of Stoke.
Lived in Cross heath since I was born late 80s always down castle growing up..! Good memories Castle has changed from the 60s was good in the 2000s gone downhill since 2010s
My dad worked at an uphostlers down an alley by the Victorian covered bus stop. In the film. I worked at S J Mott, photography shop across the Dr later about 1966
Oh the old Stones that was when you could call it a good market. At the bottom of town was hubanks veg shop my mum used to send me down there for some nice tomotoe's with the message make sure their English. Still bemoan the old municipal Hall. What do we get now a council building that looks like a greenhouse. And ugly modern buildings that in sixty years time will want knocking down. What's happened to our lovely old Town. Good film tho despite it being a long time ago.
60 years down the line and nothing has changed. Same old buildings, same housing, same roads and same infrastructure except a few supermarket stores and the automobile sector. What has the council done and developed in last 60 years?
@@staciharrington-parker9938 i’m sure it is but i just mean to say there’s no modern development. Modern infrastructure is terribly missing in stoke and newcastle.
While I agree to a certain point I cannot agree to putting new modern buildings up i think the new council building is awful. Yes build but let it be in keeping with the architecture we have. Newcastle can be a thriving town again you don't need a glass house to make it so. I
Need to get your eyes checked haha and considering it's amateur footage filmed around 60 years ago you should know its hardly going to be in HD you moron. Jesus wept.
If your from the area you should be able to identify what and where things are. Footage for its age is incredible so keep your shitty opinions to yourself
