You are showing my progression. Norton course or medium, Norton India, Halls soft white Arkansas & a surgical Black Arkansas. I removed the oil from the Norton stones (they come loaded with oil) using several baths in boiling water with some floor cleaner until no more oil was on the surface of the bath and then went strait to using water. Of course after watching this channel I have switched to Dawn and water and am not looking back! Thanks for the video Rooster and keep them coming dude...............
Big fan of Norton India , tap magic works good on them too . Love micro fibers wiping my Arkansas stones . At work when cutting fiberglass insulation off pipe those towels work great . We noticed they pull the fiberglass fibers off our arms and neck . So , I thought they'd be great for wiping down my stones . Speaking of pain in the butt to lap , that blue-black is a nightmare ! You were oh so right about that one .
Rough Rooster Knife Sharpening I'm only doing one side , I've spent hours and I literally couldn't tell a difference, finally starting to see and feel a difference. Made 4 strokes per side and was making changes in directions in notebook paper . When I told Steven , DANs son my plan to lap one side , I still remember that pitiful look he gave me ! ( like good luck with that ) . He knew and you knew the amount of work it would take but man , WOW . This is becoming my favorite all time stone . Really looks like a gun barrel blue . Almost grayish , buddy at work said it looked blue-black . I'm so glad I came across your videos Chris . I really need to take you down to Dans . They really are good people . I could listen to his son for hours . Mary told me no one knows Arkansas whetstones like Steven because he has spent his whole life cutting and lapping them . Steven and Dan are truly humble men in a way words can't describe. Anyway , I always thought that puma was hard to unlock . I could hear that snap !
Very cool vintage stones. I've not tried a crystolon, but I'm still amazed at how quickly a Norton fine India eats steel; I almost find the coarse India redundant. BTW, supposedly Norton gave the India stone that name because it resembled a natural stone from said area of the world.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 A quick question, if you don't mind: do you think it's acceptable to jump from a fine india straight to a translucent, or would it be wise to squeeze a soft ark in between? I've been doing the former, was just wondering if there was a substantial difference between the fine india and a soft ark.
@@Shizenfism that is way way to big of a grit jump. Really wouldnt do much good. Basicly polishing a micro aberration. Definatly need something in there
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 It's interesting that the hib27 reversible sets came in both configurations. Fine india, soft ark and fine india, trans ark. Maybe if you kept the trans really matte so it had more abrasive power you could get away with it, but polished, eeeh. Lately, I have just been using true washitas on knives. I just got a 6x2 rosy red I am stripping and that may well be the full time washita option with one side lapped coarse and the other allowed to work in.
I pick up a India stone like the thick one you showed it is tan the india name is on the top . in small print under that it says made in USA ,it looks like the same grit on both sides , do you know the grit ? ,it shaped my Kershaw ken onion blade real nice i used 3&1 oil .
Hi Chris, It's been a bit since I commented..... Was going through your older posts...and noticed this one...had to watch it because I'm going through a retro phase lately....lol What I wanted to say is norton is still making the tri-hone and they are still making the replacement stones....check out sharpening supplies.com Brand new is slightly higher price than what you paid for yours.....just wanted to pass on the info. Hope all is well.
I just bought a set of 300 / 600 Ultra Sharp 8x3 diamond plates and I'm not impressed as far as cutting speed compared to the 11.5" Norton replacement stones. They cut okay but you can get the replacement stones from Sharpening supplies for $19.99 each.
Really? I'm really surprised at this. I've talked to several people that have gotten them and love them. Do you think they may have been a bad batch? Are they visibly ok looking?
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Maybe I just expected too much. They look like whatever diamonds are on there are evenly coated. I have only sharpened two folders and a 8" slicing knife on them so far.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 You said in the video, after mentioning DMT, "I cannot remember the other kind of diamond plate", or words to that effect, so I was suggesting "Atoma"
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 I have an ez lap I got in a lot. It's good enough and raises burrs. The design of the wood base is horrible and idk what they were thinking leaving that huge wood ledge around the ez plate when it has no clearance. First thing you have to do is saw the wood sides off.
Wait so you're telling me if I want a real Dan's Arkansas Stone translucent or black I have to order it and wait 2 years????? Dude what takes it so long? Like that alone is stopping me from getting a good stone because I'm way too impatient to wait too freaking years. Like kind of disappointed but it seems like this is a marketing strategy by Dan to only release so many a year to keep the price and the rarity and prestige around his brand of stones because if it's hard to get and you got to get on a waiting list it makes it seem like you got to be part of the inside club to get it. That might be why people use cheap stones that you hate on them for because people don't want to just sit around and wait for 2 years for a sharpening stone. I guess I'm going with diamond plates 😭. Damn Dan
