The Gap is a window into different lives and different generations.
Two people, of vastly different ages, discuss a shared experience that impacted their lives, how it affected them and how they dealt with it to ultimately emerge stronger.
In this episode of The Gap, retired nurse Christine Handcock, 77, sits down with Malachi Connolly, 25, a young nurse who currently works in South London. Through their conversation we learn about the positive and negative sides of the nursing profession, and how it has changed over the years.

Both seem like such lovely people. Kudos to Malachi for all that he’s doing, especially if he’s working during these tough times with the pandemic. Also thanks to Christine for her dedication over what I would imagine to be many years of hard work and dedication. We’re so lucky to have the NHS in the UK and it wouldn’t be what it is without people like this!

The most disgusting thing about UK nurses is the base salary. It’s not good enough for the work they do.
@camerono.3183
@camerono.3183 3 года назад
Oh totally not. Study for 3 years and work long hours, saving people’s lives, training the new ones and carrying the young doctors. I think hospital roles should get higher pay as GP is pretty relaxed, 9-5 for nurses there, but hospitals are madness and warrant extra money so the workers can treat themselves well on off time.

Hey, main reason why I initially didn't want to get into Nursing was 1. Salary and 2. Not getting paid whist I train to become a Registered Nurse. I get the feminine label but I go home to ma wife n kids and go out for a beer with the lads and honestly I usually have be best/funniest/interesting work stories. It’s such a rewarding and fun job. In Malaysia, we do have a lot of male nurses... in my hospital alone almost 30 nurses here are male and for me, it's good to have them around especially when a new and young nurse has to treat a male stranger that they don't know, we called in the male nurses instead to help them out... plus most of them can handle the machines way better than us females... Stay safe and Keep up the good work...
@daveclassique2786
@daveclassique2786 3 года назад
You're starting to see it more and more, but there is definitely still a stigma that it's a "woman's field of duty", even though originally that was not the case. Excellent pay, benefits, and pension, and there's a lot of different fields you can go into under nursing. And if you want to have a more "masculine" job in the hospital, you can always work as an RT. Usually pays less than being a nurse but you don't have to deal with blood, piss, shit, and puke. There's almost always a shortage of nurses here in Canada, and they're always encouraging people to go through college for it. It's a hard field to be in though. My mum's been a nurse for 37 years and she's been in every ward, including scrub, but has found her place for a while in the ICU. The level of abuse from patients you can take there is pretty insane, so it's incredible that she just barrels through it and doesn't take anything to heart. I nearly went into nursing because she's an amazing role model, but decided to pursue counselling instead.
@Birch12430

From my perspective from working in a hospital in northern Canada, male nurses typically are in more critical areas they seem to gravitate to ICUs and emergency rooms. Our ems here I think is slightly more male then female

I work as a medical engineer and i work with doctors a lot. Probably because of the amount of work they have, or their very scientific education, doctors seem very on the "disease" side of medicine, and human relationship are not as a much a priority. I have a very scientific education myself and could not have that level of human contact. Fortunately, nurses are always doing an amazing job to make you feel safe, feel home, feel warm, even if exhausted or stressed. They are that link between human and medicine. Hats off to them, you are all amazing

I remember one time when I was committed to a mental hospital I saw how overworked the nurses were. And a nurse that was assigned to me one day looked soo tired when she took me out for a smoke. Soo I told her to take her time and have her lunch because she missed her lunch break. We got to talking and it made me realize how much hard work nurses work and how committed they really are. I take my hat off to any good nurse out there. It makes me soo very grateful that my mental health keyworker is a nurse himself.

Any profession that makes you confront death, be it war or nursing or smth similar makes people calmer, therefore even if they aren't ''more wiser'' they will still look so, not saying they aren't, but once you see death up close, suddenly wearing gucci or some off brand shit that people make such a big deal out of turns to be nothing of importance, and that is surely a trait any wise person has.

Workplace injuries is one big issue they didn't mention. Back injuries are very common, that stem from years or even decades of lifting, turning, helping patients in and out of bed, but also abuse from violent and entitled patients, whether it's physical or verbal. For some reason, I imagine nurses from the lady's era didn't experience it as much from patients, people weren't so nasty, probably because healthcare wasn't so customer service oriented, but I may be wrong, they didn't touch on that side of nursing. But I'm sure nurses from that era had other things they dealt with, like doctors today are much more respectful toward nurses than they would've been back in the day. Nursing, in general, today, is much more esteemed as a profession, than it used to be. Another weird thing is, older nurses seem to have a lot of resentment toward young nurses. There's even a popular saying: nurses eat their young. Why is that? I think there should be part 2 for this, with more of these questions asked.

I've got so much respect for nurses. I've had family members in hospital for serious illnesses and a good nurse doesn't only improve a patient's physical health. I've seen nurses making jokes and cheering up family members that are dealing with terrible situations. Making ppl feel safe and cared for and happier is just as important as dealing with the patient's physical illness. I've been so grateful to hospital staff that has put a smile on a loved one's face despite their circumstances. It really is hard to express the difference they can make in ppls lives. Thankyou to everyone that does this job

My mother is my favorite person and she was a nurse for over 35years up until she retired. The stories she could tell you would blow your mind, have you laughing your ass off, or crying your eyes out. She has always maintained that the work was super rewarding but the treatment/pay/working conditions of anyone working in healthcare made the job something you have to really love to want to do for long periods of time. Always appreciate the people who take care of you even if they get paid to do it they don't get paid nearly enough i promise you that.

This is so insightful and makes me think of my own time as a patient within the NHS and even on one occasion in Italy. Without fail the many nurses I have seen have always been some of the most compassionate and kind people I have ever met who seem to just have this understanding that the doctors never seem to of what the patient is going through. I'm not saying that doctors aren't amazing people helping with every single thing and there is one American doctor in particular that treated me who springs to mind as fantastically compassionate. But overall nurses just seem to get what you're going through more, they talk to you and keep you calm and I just can't thank so many of them enough. As a point on the bureaucracy I remember one nurse in particular who fought so hard for me to be sent home in Ambulance after surgery where I lived 2 hours away from the hospital. The hospital had me put out on my own and I had to spend £90 on a taxi only a day after my surgery whilst hopped up on morphine. She fought so hard for me to be taken home in an ambulance only for the hospital to refuse it. In my memory of it I feel more sorry for her than I do for myself. To see someone with such compassion put down like that is just a heartbreaking thing.

I'm glad they touched on the Doctor/Nurse relationship as i spent 2 months in hospital and found the nurses were far more clued up in the correct way in what was best for my condition at the time. The Doctors you see for maybe 5-10 minutes a day whereas the nurses are on the ward with you for 12 hours at a time. In my opinion a good Doctor is one who is willing and comfortable listening and acting upon what the patient and nurse are telling them... with their own medical knowledge as a guide obviously.

I said, "Hi, see you in about 10 minutes." I was headed to the cafeteria for coffee. *And the asshole replied, "I don't think so."* My father was 52 and I was 26. At that time in my life I was a photographic chemical engineer. I quit my job and immediately started nursing school. *That one nurse changed my life.* It is true... Nurses always know more than doctors. They are more compassionate. They even caught my father's doctor making a mistake on prescribing chemo drugs. *Without nurses, none of us would be here* I was even delivered by a nurse because the OBGYN for my mother was too drunk from a Christmas party.

The main issue, I find, these days is that the contact with people is not valued enough by the hospital. Nurses caretakers, ... now all have to meet a daily quota of patients. Nurses almost used to be psychologists in a way as well, someone you could talk to when you felt lonely when under their care. Nowadays... the only thing that matters is how much money can you make us and how much work can you do so we don't have to hire more nurses. It's sad.

However, having worked alongside some truly amazing nurses, I now know that when I finish my degree, I am going to start studying adult nursing. As an SHCA, we tend to spend far more time with our patients day in and day out and we will often be the ones to notice when something is not right with our patient's or when something has changed. I can do many things that a nurse can do, apart from the administration of medications and IV's. I can perform ECGS, bladder scans, venepuncture, wound dressings and I have performed CPR several times. Death is also a huge part of my role, whilst it can be extremely difficult to deal with, I also consider it a privilege to be a part of someones final moments, even after they pass, to still be able to treat them with dignity and compassion during last offices is an honour. Politics and finances aside, the NHS is a blessing.

I wish every nurse was this nice and caring. The people who "took care" of my uncle before he passed. He lost both his legs to a flesh-eating disease. One night when they gave him a bath, they locked the door and beat him up, shoved his face in the bed while he screamed and no one came to help him. He never slept at night again, he wandered around the hospital at night in his wheelchair and what's really fucked up, this was all during covid and I couldn't see him as much as I wanted to before he passed. Couldn't talk to him in person and, those two were never caught.

If these two hosted a podcast series together I'd listen, and I'm not even in the medical field

My hat goes off to all medical professionals, that is a job that never ends, i'm a teacher in a school but at no point on my many holidays do I ever get a panicked parent running up and down screaming "Somebody please help me, my son is stuck with his algebra homework, is there a teacher on this plane? please Do something, his grades are slipping!" yet for every heart attack or serious ailment, doctors and nurses are always on call! the heroes we don't deserve!

I work in critical care, there's not a shift that goes by where we don't experience death. Being up close and personal with death teaches you that some of the nursing care is about working in a personal rather than professional manner. We've played music with them, sung with them, and try to hold their hand and be present with them when they pass. I would want the same thing, to never die alone. With times like these it reminds us to be more human and present in the moment rather than acting professional, and that's what I love about nursing.

IMO it's the nurses that are the backbone of our hospitals (I'm in NZ) & I don't think a lot of people realize how much our nurses do & give of themselves to their jobs. They deserve much much more than they get paid!
