In this video we take a look at the "Kaiser Siding" in Portsmouth, RI that was cleared of brush by Old Colony & Newport Railway volunteers last year. I did not photograph the volunteers working (I was one of them) but we see the before and after of our work. In the future more work on getting this track in better shape is planned.

In the fall of 1967 I was in the engineering program at the old Roger Williams College when the school was still housed in old factory buildings and the YMCA Building in Providence, RL. twenty or 30 years ago they built a new and very attractive campus in Bristol, RI. One of the field trips our class participated in was a visit to the new and unfinished Kaiser plant in Portsmouth. The plant - if I remember correctly - was to be used for the production of extruded wire. I don't know if the plant was ever finished to the point of actual wire production but I can say the plant was huge and It included a very high tower where the wire was actually to be drawn. My new friends at RWC were like me newly discharged Veterans and all of us were Infantry Combat Vets of the Vietnam War. 3 of my friends were Infantry Marines while one other Veteran and myself were Combat Paratroopers. So on the day of the visit to the Kaiser Plant one of the union workers working in the tower yelled a rather derogatory comment about being school boys, etc., etc.. Of course none of us were in the mood to take crap from anyone so one of us invited these clowns down off their platform for some fun and games. They didn't come down and to tell you the truth I'm glad they didn't as I'm sure there would have been unfortunate repercussions the next day at our school offices. Every once in awhile I drive past the old Kaiser plants location but I haven't noticed that very tall tower for quite some time - it must have been pulled down years ago.

Glad to see the line is still in good hands. I remember catching a work train there when I was a volunteer

South Coast Rail, great video. I hope in the next video, Mass Coastal or Newport Secondary rail, puts down three tracks. If it happens, I can see business picks up quickly. That's what makes a great railroad.

Not going to happen. First would have to build the track to the bridge abutment and then build a bridge to connect to the mainland. It will only be a tourist railroad.

Has anyone checked the dates on the rail to see how old it is?

I am fairly sure this isn’t a GE. It looks more like a Whitcomb or Porter. But, I am not confident about that. The relatively large and square cab are sure signs they aren’t GE. Also, the engine doesn’t sound “right”. However, critters were powered by numerous manufacturers engines.

It’s a Porter

It doesn't really look like the main line gets a whole lot of use itself actually

Looks like 70lb to 85lb rail on this line judging by the joint bars. The siding didn't look too overgrown. I've certainly seen much worse on a branch line main track! Now, if the people living across the road were opposed to rail traffic going by their homes would they be called NIMFYS (Not in my FRONT yard)? ;-) Seriously though, that wooden privacy fence sure is close to the siding.

Kind of looks like a fence has been installed in the RR right of way.

Interesting that it had an interlocked derail at one time. Some new ties and jacked up out of the dirt and the track would be fit for anther 20 year of use.

It’s not a interlocked derail , the derail is connected to the switch stand the the derail goes down via the pipeline when thrown in reverse
@gravelydon7072

@@davidfoubert1493 That is an interlocked derail. It and the switch stand being tied together. Interlocking doesn't mean that there has to be a tower. In my former place of employment, we had trapped key interlocking on our main circuit breakers. You couldn't move the key from one to the other unless the first breaker was off. When off, the key could be turned to be removed. Once removed, you put it in the other lock and turned. That allowed you to turn the second breaker on. Interlocked meaning that unless conditions are correct, a function cannot be done. In this case, the derail cannot come off unless the switch is set for the siding. Even modern vehicles have interlocking in them. You can't start them in any position other than P or maybe N and some even require that the brake be depressed.

We had in my 30 years working on the Lirr had hand thrown switches with the Derails hooked to the switch via pipeline non-interlock. I can’t remember how many switches I thrown with permission from the dispatcher

@@davidfoubert1493 LIRR #1555 sits about 18 miles from me. Nicknamed " Snake eyes " as it has it has marker lights where the other RS-3s on the LIRR did not.
