I would love to hear them in person - up close and personal! They are awesome even on video. Nothing like the sound of a big, radial engine.

Absolutely Love those radial engines! I worked as a licensed aircraft mechanic for over thirty years and got to work on several of these magnificent engines. They were very reliable if maintained correctly and were true works of art…….

If my great grandfather was alive today? He would say: it was like the sound of victory when you would hear the sound of the engines roaring in all its glory!

Although not a radial engine, this brings back memories from my childhood of my grandfather's airboat which had a war surplus Allison V12 installed. It was loud and fast nd a lot of fun

Rotary and Radial engines are in my opinion, the most esthetically pleasing visually and audibly, absolutely stunning pieces of machinery, and a huge credit to the designers, builders and those who maintain them! The smell is something special too :D Haha, yep, I'm a perverted engine sniffer.....

Love the sound of the big radials. They have a throatier, meaner sound than inline engines.

The R-975 C1 was used in a bunch of tanks, both light and medium, during WWII. The Stuarts and Shermans were the biggest consumers, iirc, though the M4 used a number of engines throughout different variants. Great vid, the sound of these chuffing away is wonderful.

I always thought that these engines needed at least a club prop to run, like a flywheel. Looks like I'm way wrong. I can't see them running for long without some air cooling though. Nice video!

You took my comment. I am no authority but I've heard these engines should not be run without a prop or partial prop. What gives?

It is just wrong to run these engines with out some kind of propeller for airflow and cooling.

This engine is a single row, poppet valve radial. The HERCULES is an English TWO row, SLEEVE valve radial. The ones I’ve seen, don’t look like this.
