Sarum sounds Roman, and It was on the Port Way, which was a major Roman road from London over to Wales, I think. It was called Sorviodunum. I was just popping by because there was another program on the place, and I wanted to add a few things I know from things that were told to me about William's occupation of the place. One of my ancestors William Longspee held it as an earl. He was the son of Henry II and Ida De Tosney (later Bigod.) William didn't pay off his debt for the conquest for a long time, though he may have sold lands and borrowed through people in the lowlands and northern France to pay off some people earlier. He was paying his troops and suppliers back money for his entire rein, and only under William II were the debts mostly repaid. There was a hall in the castle on top of Sarum. It was on an upper floor with a window at the end that looked out on the back of the church apse. It had a bunch of benches in it where William I and his lords did a lot of their business. It seemed like he ruled more like the captain of a football team, with his lords a bunch of old friends. That's not what we think of from the movies portrayal of kings and lords.

Must be wonderful to live in a place where every square foot is loaded with archeology. Fortunately the English are a people that embrace their past, unlike other parts of the world.

Old Sarum as a Sacred site goes back at least 4000 years and probably back to the late stone age as many sites retained their Sacred uses from the old time.

If you in this part of Wiltshire then I recommend Old Sarum castle as a much more interesting and rewarding visit than Stonehenge.

I heard a lore that an archer pointed his bow and shot as far as he could, and the landing point is where Salisbury Cathedral sits? Is this 'true'?
@Jawa1604
@Jawa1604 3 года назад
That is the legend but the current Cathedral is 2 miles away. However the arrow is said to have hit a deer and wounded it but it kept running. The deer died of it's wounds and fell to the earth which is where they built the Cathedral.
