Putting the Yamaha XS650 old school chopper back together! Unfortunately I couldn't ride it in this episode because of the wheel spacer issues but keep an eye out for the first ride with the 6 over forks coming soon! I had such an awesome time making this episode with the whole crew, hope you guys enjoyed it. Keep it weird y'all #shadetreearmy #chopper #motorcyclebuildseries

Start with 4 to 600 grit paper and work your way to 2000. Dont skip grits and dont chnge grit till the previous scratches are all gone from the last . wet sand 1000 and up. You wont need polish after 2k grit.

Vinny He is correct finer the scratches the smoother it gets should shine up nice ive done custom exhaust years ago

This is almost exactly what I was going to say. I do a lot of polishing if stainless steel at my job and this is how we do it. Also, use WD40 liberally to lube the sandpaper to keep it from loading up.
@samrobins7231
@samrobins7231 5 лет назад
I’m a knife maker so as you can imagine polishing steel is kinda my thing. Vinny is 95% correct if you want a mirror polish 2k grit wont get you there, there will still be a haze. A polishing compound of some type will help a lot, I’d recommend green or white rouge. As far as a power tool is concerned I’d use a small air powered belt sander. The key as I’ve said before and as vinny said, TOTALLY remove scratches before moving onto the next grit no matter what. No skipping steps even if it seems faster..... its not. Alternating sanding direction by 45 degrees will help you see said scratches and some say it removes material slightly faster.

I had a 79 XS 650. One of the best bikes I ever owned. Went to a 1400 Intruder next and now I have an 03 Roadstar 1600. It's a great bike but a tad heavy. Still a Yamaha and a great cruiser. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

You did a fantastic job building an old school chopper. Looks great. You don’t need to polish ends of bars. They will be covered by the grips.

For removing the flashing and excess metal, I use a Dremel tool with a sanding drum mounted, or a small tapered stone. Does not remove the material as fast, but you have more control.

I've been fixing up my first motorcycle for 3 months and I'm getting it back this week. It's an XJ650 which is the cousin to the XS650. seeing you work on a Yamaha as I work on mine made me feel like its all worth it dude Cheers and keep it weird ✌

Hey man one tool I use a lot for polishing that could help speed up your hand sanding process is a dynafile. Its basically a small hand held belt sander and if you use fine sand paper you can get a pretty uniform surface for hand polishing. You can find them on amazon or a metal shop supplier like air gas.

I've got a 3/4 hp polishing machine I would let you try but I'm up in South Carolina. Those bars shouldn't need any sanding. Just rouge and plenty of rpms. I'm impressed that you got the results you did from the power drill. Bike is looking awesome man!

If I could just add a small correction about the handlebars you have. The first pair you mentioned is not a z-bar but a W bar and what distinguishes it from a z bars that they not only go backwards they also go downwards as well. The other pair you called rabbit ears is what I've been informed that new school guys call ape hangers but you have there is what the old school guys call pullbacks. Thanks for the video.

Start at 600 grit and work up to 2500. Also keep all the paper you use on stainless just for stainless. If you use anything that's been used on mild steel with stainless it will rust.
@shadetreesurgeon
@shadetreesurgeon 5 лет назад
I actually started at 120 and worked up to 2000, still had those micro scratches. I think I need a belt sander
@Eric-fs3cc
@Eric-fs3cc 5 лет назад
I think 120 to start was too aggressive and probably what's up. A belt sander should get those deep scratches out then you can work on up. Going with the grain helps to. Stainless polishes like aluminum's badass cousin

Use a file to take the casting lines out it'll take a while but you get so much more control than the grinder it'll save time later in the process. Good series man

You know with all the polishing your doing I’m concerned the DOT reflectors won’t adhere to your fork legs. And I didn’t see any weld tabs to mount the rear reflectors, I assume that will be taken care of before paint/powder coat.

I, built a 1972, Yamaha XS650 CHOPPER Hardtail frame I, removed the swing arm and cut and measure and welded a Hardtail frame in to place it streached the frame 7" more longer and I cut the goose neck and welded it on a 45° degree and added a 40 over springer front end still got more work to do to it

Try a fine grit grinding wheel to remove the scratches and dull finish on the bars and then buff them out with some finishing compound purpose rated for stainless steel.

I love what you're doing with the build! You may try stepping out your sandpaper grits before polishing. Start with 600 then 1500 then fine steel wool or even 2000 grit. I think if you stick with fine grit anything on stainless the less scratches. Hopefully that helps. Side note its been douching a lot down here in Charlotte county,

Every time you go higher on the grit, the smaller the scratches will be, so when you change the sandpaper for a sandpaper with a higher grit is for erase the scratches you did before with the previous grit, so I would try with a higher grit and wet more the sandpaper, it will help to be softer, at least it's how it works with paint

Dina file would work great!! Fix all your problems. Start with 80 grit then 120 grit belts and then scotch bright belts. Brown then blue and should be a mirrored finish. I work with stainless everyday and man some stuff has to be damn perfect on certain machinery. Chopper is looking damn good so close to paint! Any idea on paint job?....
