This video and mega mix is dedicated to all pioneers of Hip Hop Culture from the East Coast to the West Coast from 1967 - 1985. We thank you for everything you have created for us. We also thank you for showing the world that creativity, ingenuity, inspiration, practicality, and perseverance with limited resources can shock the world... quell racism...and eventually construct peace.
Enjoy!
A Man Without History is a Tree Without Roots.

KRS One said it best: "Rap is something you DO... Hip Hop is something you Live." Hip Hop culture was born from urban plight with the influence of other cultural forms of expression. Hip Hop music speaks for and from the culture. Rap music is music based on the sake of rhyming. Yet, Rapping is an elemental aesthetic in Hip Hop music. Ultimately Hip Hop consists of Rap, but Rap does not consist of Hip Hop.

We just brought back the original recipe to how a megamix is suppose to sound like. This is an old school formula of layering, cutting, phasing, mixing, and edits. I hope we get to hear this formula again one day from the new jacks.

For all you fools claiming that 90's Hip Hop is Old Skool, think again. Do your research incase you weren't even around at the time of the real Old Skool!! Late 70's-80's=OLD SKOOL!!!!!!!

I'm sure that industry has progressed from 70s-90s rap of course its much different but 90s and 70s beats are old-school compared to the ear bleeding trap/drill that's on the market now, that shit isn't even rap.

BTW the cadence you heard before the Jay Z and Epmd vocals was by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 called "Superrappin'". A live band was simulating the bassline of "Seven Minutes of Funk" which was due before Hip Hop music starting recording samples. "Superrappin'" can be found on Enjoy Records.

That is a good question. As soon as I get that outline from our DJ, I can get you that answer in detail. And yes, all tracks you hear ARE on original vinyl. Not even reprints btw. The best way to protect vinyl for many years is to keep them packed tight for zero stress; to inspect your needles; keep the vinyl clean from finger oil and other residues; and to balance and lock your turntable arms. You never want too much weight coming from a needle. Thanks for the props, Brotha!

@OldSchoolScholar

Nice effort and potential. Keep in mind, LL was 15 when the original Rock The Bells and Radio was released. He was very sophisticated at that age, even though it has been rumored E-Love had helped with his rhymes. But that is just a rumor. If you do not mind my critique; you just have to keep practicing over ALL kinds of beats to become an emcee, AND you need to practice spitting over a live DJ cutting beats to become the real deal. Most new jacks can't do that because they have no history.
@OldSchoolScholar
@OldSchoolScholar 15 лет назад
second, before you record your lyrics to an actual recording; get your tracks first then write to the beat. Spread out your syllables if you have to and find a style of saying those words. It is not always about the lyrics but the flow and delivery. A problem many new recording emcees face is that they do not craft their rhymes to the beat. They write at the last minute and when their songs are released it sounds offbeat. There is nothing special about writing rhymes in the studio. It's lazy.
@OldSchoolScholar
@OldSchoolScholar 15 лет назад
Wow, do we have time? I will contact DJ GrandSinister Ice to lay it down. Understand there can possibly be 2-6 tracks layered together which means there can easily be 40-60 pieces used! Thanks for checking out the mix. I hope you feel traditional Hip Hop as it was meant to be!

OG, we are STILL there with that vibe and flavor. Remember we got to pass that passion and culture down to the shorties. The graff writers got it! The Bboys got it! The DJs still burn it! But the emcees forgot. We got to save the MCs. We need more new cats like People Under The Stairs, Murs, and Chali2na. We need more Em, De La Soul, Mos Def, and KRS.

third, be inspired by listening to all kinds of music; read all kinds of literature; and study the old ways and science of rocking parties. Never emcee for self. Emcee to rock and shock the crowd. Ultimately, the crowd makes the emcee in the end. People listen to music to feel good; they listen to cyphers to be amused; and they buy your music because you brought an emotional/cerebral connection. I believe with fanatical practice you can do this. Just keep doing, Brotha. 4th; limit the cursing.

Thank you, Brotha. Remember, it ain't just about the Old School, but it is what make the Old School and True School Hip Hop culture. It is about being transparent, being real, being about people, and about real life. It was always about making something out of nothing and getting out of bad situations, and not glorifying materialism. We make money-not money make us!

Scenario Remix from A Tribe Called Quest. The actual groove is from Kool and the Gang's Album Music is the Message, but I forget which song. Could be Soul Vibrations. You can still get B Side Wins Again from Public Enemy off of Fear of a Black Planet but that added a reverse dub bass line for the album. The original is dirtier and more demo raw sounding. Straight gutter dope. I forget what the original break beat is call. I have to ask GrandSinister Ice. He loves cutting up those old breaks.

Tell your peoples that this video is dedicated to them as well as yourself. We put the effort in this joint and website to promote the passion and love for the Hip Hop Culture AND its people. I am personally honored that it took you back in the day...and today we are back from that way!

It is a voice of culture indeed. Remember Hip Hop is more than just music. It was created by all forms of ethnicity especially black people and hispanics. Poor whites of all backgrounds and religious groups, too. Pan-Africans, Asians South Americans, and Arabs are now taking it to broader level. No matter what your culture is, Hip Hop can interweave in it and reflect upon it when you make it your own. Peace to all my Czech Hip Hop Brothas!
@OldSchoolScholar
@OldSchoolScholar 15 лет назад
I believe people will rock authentic Hip Hop music and culture, the problem is mainly in the United States where everything is overly marketed. The USA killed B-Boying in the 80s by market saturation to kids who had no understanding this was an artistic cultural dance and sport. B-Boying played out in Pop Culture back then, but thank God the Europeans, Asians, and South Americans stayed with it and evolved the game. Thank God the kids from the inner cities in the USA kept it going in small crews
@OldSchoolScholar
@OldSchoolScholar 15 лет назад
Thank you for make this video a favorite! Here is the deal; authentic Hip Hop culture is not dead, and Old School Hip Hop is actually any style of Hip Hop that was mostly present prior a generation to anyone. For me the L Brothers and Disco King Mario are Old School to me where as Run DMC may be old school to someone born in 1991. So that answer is only based on your perception. It is only unpopular to people who are only trendy. Outside of the USA, Hip Hop culture is alive and well in respect.

some people wanted to know how did QBall edit the pics on beat to the tracks. After he created a track for the pics and audio, he simply tapped the marker hot-key on the keyboard to the beat. sometimes on the down beat, the quarter, the half, and the sixteenth. sometimes on a sound as well like a rhythm cut or scratch. then he zooms in on the audio algorithm and tightens up where the marker should cut on the audio by using his eyes and ears. everything was first based on rhythm then by sight.

Schoolly D has a pic on there as a street flyer. The Beasties missed out only as a pic. They will more than likely be on the next piece. If you read the ticker tape they are accredited. Remember this is dedicated to all the pioneers of Hip Hop culture up to 1985 before the Golden Age began. If anyone has noticed Malcolm Mclaren was never mentioned. He was just a pop culture pimping sucka! Buffalo Gals was a gimmick and a poison to how Hip Hop was portrayed as a novelty.
@OldSchoolScholar
@OldSchoolScholar 15 лет назад
That is a combo call and response type situation between two songs. One is with Jay Z and Foxy Brown's "Ain't No Ni--a" playing off of EPMD's "It's My Thang". The main reason for mixing this segment was due to the infamous sample called "Seven Minutes of Funk" by the Whole Darn Family. The bassline lick is one of the sexiest breaks of all time. Very popular with DJs and MCs. You can find this sample on RU-vid btw.
@OldSchoolScholar
@OldSchoolScholar 15 лет назад
In response to some songs being Funk; you are correct! Hip Hop's roots are based on rhythms from Funk (which is originally called Disco), Jazz, Latin Caribbean, West Indian, Old Rock, Soul, and Ethnic vibes. Hip Hop is Fusion from limited resources. When you do not have a band the DJ will "create one" to rock the parties. Unfortunately today's kids do not know Hip Hop culture history. And yes we need to bring the funk back! Graff Writers, DJs, B-Boys still got it, but rappers fell off!
@OldSchoolScholar
@OldSchoolScholar 15 лет назад
At 1:40 was Melle Mel from a performance on an underground vinyl called Live Convention 82. The layer mixed underneath is a piece from Watch Out Now by The Beatnuts (bitten by Jennifer Lopez when she did Jenny On The Block.) The piece being cut up is Heaven and Hell; a famous old school break often heard from DJs way way back. Sorry I took a few days to answer. I had a busy weekend. Peace!

@ThePublicEnemyNo1 Thanks, Brother! We represent the Wild Wild West. You brothers have been taking the MC crown for the past several years with Murs, Jurassic, Heiros, and People Under The Stairs. Peace and Respect Giggles. Real Hip Hop Culture never died. It is simply pushed to the back of the bus thanks to the fake ass rap music and its rappers. Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and glam rappers are only pimping fake hood nonsense. As long as we are all still alive, and with the new generation of talent coming down the pipe, we will always be here.

It depends how you sample. If it is a recognizable hook or melody and you intend to make a profit off publishing and sales then yes. If you chop it up and use techniques like filtering the sound then no. The skill is not to be so obvious, but if you choose to sample straight up then you got to pay the piper.
