I trained karate in the 1970s under a student of Mas Oyama and it was brutal, there was no health and safety, there was no fear of being sued over injury, it was just hard, hurt then pick yourself up and go again. I was a tiny timid skinny kid and my parents sent me for self defence as most parents did in the 70s, karate, judo or boxing. We didnt exactly think of it as fun at first but it was a right of passage for boys, something missing today. Even though i remember hating it at first i recognized its power even if i didnt want to be a fighter and every time life went pear shaped, i was suffering or lost i went back to martial arts whether it was judo karate hung fut or taijiquan, they were always there to put me back together until they became a constant, 57 now and i now know my dad dropping me off at the kyokushin dojo that i feared set the pattern thst would save me throughout my life. Thanx dad. I am posting this because you have a dojo and one day a skinny timid kid is going to walk through your door, he will be scared, he will fear pain....you can help build him into a good man. On behalf of timid skinny kids i say thank you.

@emptyemptiness8372: First, thanks for your comment! I trained in Oyama karate for a time and it was one of the 2 fighting arts where I would ask myself if I was crazy for doing it! (The other being wrestling). Funny you mentioned the "skinny kid"! The young man in this video with the grey hoodie on is Muhammad. 135 pounds and a beast! He told me himself, that he lacked confidence. Now, he has it. Thanks.

I wish there was more of this nationally. I'm actually thinking of cross training in MMA because my dojo doesn't train nor does any drills. It's frustrating because I want to grow as a karateka. I want to improve my Bunkai and Kihon in a self defense contest but nobody does training like this.

you guys are actually good. The transition yami.(guy in t-shirt) made to a body hold after receiveing a right leg kick looks like its the product of many repetitions and practice . I would love to come over from canada to visit you guys. im 23 and i have a fighg againtst a kickboxer in the 165 category in 30 days. I'm mostly a lanky jabber with a front teep and lead leg kicker. I would love to leaen som basic clinch work

@abdiabdulsamed2614: We do much clinch work! Standup grappling is 40% of my teaching. Anytime you can make it here, I will work with you privately. I get guys from Canada every so often.

I have a black belt in Tang Soo Do karate and I tell you the instructor at Ummah Fight Camp seems like he takes martial arts teaching seriously unlike most of the martial arts instructors in the Augusta, Georgia area where I live (If I had the money to relocate I would leave the Augusta, Georgia area). Sadly these martial arts instructors now a days only care about your money not teaching you self-defense good job brothers.

I wouldn’t cal this REAL karate.but it definitely is better then jesses encamps version .but in order for karate to truly evolve and rise we gotta dig deeper. bringing back the old days, and when I say old I mean Choki Motobu,Anko itosu, bringing back the grappling side of karate which was Toutie,Tegumi, the hard striking, the takedowns, the brutality of the art but the peace within the mind.before karate evolves it has to go back to the past and reach for the effective things it has forgotten But one little tip,The old masters of karate back then did Bogu Sparring, plus karate back then had ALOT of grappling, which mean if there kick was thrown out to slow…it was grabbed and they were sweaped to the ground,so I think it’ll be good to add we’re they can catch each other’s kicks,bc that’s wat happens in the real world if it’s thrown out to slow.it’s karate old realistic training.there sparring consisted of Punching,Kicking,Clinching, elbowing, kneeing, takedowns, catching kicks, karate goes much deeper then u think

@AyeJordan7: Just saw your comment and it requires responding to. 1) Karate does not go deeper than I THINK personally since I have trained in ALL the aspects that you are speaking of. I, SAYF CARMAN said 12 years ago that Karate was ALL anyone needed because it had all the aspects of combat! CHECK MY POSTS AND YOU WILL SEE THAT. 2) YOU don't attend my classes, but if you did, you would leave exhausted from the classes since we do ALL that you mentioned. 3) When I said it was "real karate" I was talking about NO PADS.

@AyeJordan7: Lastly, I think you have made the same assumption as people who hear me talk about Philosophy. That is that I CANT possibly know what I am talking about. Perhaps it is because of some bias you are not aware of. Therefore I will say that just as I AM an intellectual, I also AM a real KARATEKA. You are always welcome to take a class on GI NIGHT. ALL RANKS are welcome.

Bodhidharma introduced Kung Fu to China. Karate is a simplified version of Kung Fu. Bodhidharma was practicing Kalaripayattu. Kalari itself was banned by colonials and many techniques were lost. Kalari combines Ayurvedic medicines. Mori o Higoanna told in a video that everyone who knows Karate should know some of the traditional Japanese medicine. He was applying a herbal combination from China on his hands to strengthen his skin so that it won't easily cut. Herbs and herbal combinations can give good strength to the body. Herbs give slow long lasting effects unlike chemical drugs that give fast short lasting effects. Most herbs take 12 years to give full effect even some minor Siddhis. Nirgundi is a herb that is used in meditation and calms the nervous system. Goal of meditation is to bring the mind to a zero-thought state even for a split second. Karate Kata is designed for this process. Kata is meditation in motion to achieve Mushin or No Mind or Empty Mind. Hallucinating herbs and chemical drugs like DMT should be avoided as they agitate the mind more. Every split second samadhi clears and expands the mind and even has a healing effect on the body.

You have an excellent group of students. Their skills are impressive, but their characters are even more impressive. They seem like some fine young gentlemen. Kudos to you too, sir.

Reminds me of my kenpo days in DC in the early 70's. Training in the heat, pushups on gravel, always sparring.
