Old School Marlin Fishing - Catching marlin on Zane Grey's antique tackle

We roll the clock back 90 years in an attempt to repeat the amazing feats of pioneering American fisherman and adventurer Zane Grey. The team head out from the historic Bay of Islands in New Zealand aboard the Alma G, Zane Grey's former boat with one of Greys antique reels. Uncanny coincidences abound and Matt hooks up to a rampaging striped marlin on tackle from the 1920s - and that's where the drama begins to unfold as the same challenges that were thrown up in the 20's have to be overcome to land the feisty fish.

Sorry late to the party, 1 yr since posted , But I’ve just got into retro fishing , I’ve just started to recondition old bamboo deep sea rods and reels for my personal use to do the same as your doing it not only adds to the fact your trying to catch a trophy but to catch one on antique equipment adds all to the fact of how they did it back in the day , this video is bloody brilliant and would love to see more fishing done that way as it’s a real challenge as it was done back in the 20’s 30’s and 40’s please do more ! 👍🏼

Brilliant thanks 😊 👍. Great fish. Glad it was put to a good use after it was taken... I watch you put back,and tag so many other fish that taking this 1 is a good reward...After all Marlin sure is a tasty ,wholesome and healthy fish...and enough to feed a village lol 😆

You should read about the reel that Zane Grey had made for him by watchmaker in California. It was larger than today’s 130s. I’ve seen a photo of it somewhere it was all polished metal, truly a one-of-a-kind state of the art monster marlin outfit. I’m gonna go Google it now

Actually in my husband is the great-grandson of Zane Grey and believe it or not there's a lot more of his gear out there that is not in museums than people realize we know every step of his entire Legacy because it's our family heritage and definitely great video it's nice to see his name being remembered..
