[OLD - SEE UPDATED VIDEO] OBD2 Bluetooth Adapter with Torque Pro App Review 

For anyone who doubts the usefulness of this in court, I would like to remind you that the app displays information based on an average of the data provided by GPS, Accelerometer, and information direct from the vehicle's on-board computer through the OBD2 reader. Various settings can be changed in-app to ignore certain information, making it entirely possible to track the vehicle's speed as recorded and displayed by the OBC exclusively. Seeing as most cars can only display information received and calculated in the OBC, this app basically does what your dashboard cluster does--display vehicle status information (eg: speed, revs, gear, etcetera)--just with an additional record feature. Remember, kids... Never doubt the potential for technology to save you when you are in trouble, just don't rely on it to save you when you aren't innocent; because mathematics don't lie, and code is VERY consistent in its calculations.

I just got this adapter today and it works like a charm in my Audi a6 Avant 1.8t Quattro -01. No problems with anything and shows all the info it should when i use the torque app.

i have had this app for years. love it. it gives me the same codes and stuff my friends red brick does. i dont have to go to his house when my check engine light goes on. i call that a win for a $5 app even though i had to buy the adapter. the heat will not cause any problems. i have had mine connected since the day i bought it years ago and it still works perfect.

I bought this unit first but it didn't work on Ford (Ranger 2005 FX4). Sent it back and got the bigger one (the one with the yellow/blue label). Using Torque Pro; works great.

Thanks for the video. I just purchased the same BT Adapter through Amazon. It works fine switching between my Insight and my wife's Kia. The OBD2 plug must be within 3 feet of the steering wheel and not covered. (It's in the standard) It should be easy for anyone to find.

Didn't want this post to get buried I took mine apart (easy to do by just prying the sides open and pulling up on the connector. Snaps back in when you want to put it back together ) and you cannot add the pins to the pcb. Only pins 4,5,6,7,8,14,15,16 were connected.Pins 2,10 are needed for J1850. Should be easy enough to check your adapter by looking if pin 2 is present the adapter case is transparent and you can see the pins connected to the pcb. The model number of the adapter that was printed on the package is ZJ07300 Pin 2 - J1850 Bus+ Pin 4 - Chassis Ground Pin 5 - Signal Ground Pin 6 - CAN High (J-2284) Pin 7 - ISO 9141-2 K Line Pin 10 - J1850 Bus Pin 14 - CAN Low (J-2284) Pin 15 - ISO 9141-2 L Line Pin 16 - Battery Power

I have a problem. When I plug ELM327 mini to the car (Toyota Auris 2010), after while the car reports on the dashboard "check abs" and it never pairs the phone (Samsung S2 Cyanogenmod 10.2). Bluetooth is paired. Please help.

you can leave it in the car 24/7.. heat wont hurt it.. not heat from sunlight.. think about it.. your car has dozens of circuit boards in it.. from the radio to modules, to the ecm... electronic components can handle 150-200 degrees all day long.. solder melts at ~400 degrees.. not gonna get that hot.. i'm in texas too.. leave it in the car.. if you want to

This is a good cheap OBDII Bluetooth adapter. I bought in on AliExpress for $5 (with free shipping LOL) and it works just fine with my device (LG Optimus G). It got detected and paired just fine with my Android phone. It also got easily recognized by Torque Pro app for Android. By the way, the Torque Pro version worths every cent spent on it. It has decent speed (PIDs/s) and low delay, might be one of the best cheap ELM327 clones. The default PIN to pair with your phones is 1234.

Hey I drive a 2005 Mazda 6 2.3L. Just going to set up my car profile on the app and was wondering if you have all the details of our car so that I can put it in so my app will have an accurate reading of my car.

That lag would make the "track" mode utterly useless since the recording would be true real time(ie hitting an apex on a hard turn) and the lagging data would be a split sec behind what's being recorded. Exact values at exact times in the video are impossible due to that lag despite that function looking like its capable of that.

One last thing. Make sure your fuse to the OBD11 port in the car is good! It is usually the same fuse as cigarette lighter fuse!

your load is calculated at current engine speed and power production potential which was idle therefore it was high in the 25-30s. thanks for making the video bro ill be getting this app. i was looking for a easy way to see actual coolant temp value that the ecu is seeing vs using the gauge and ignition oe ignition timing under different engine loads. this is a great way to learn to tune a car if you are getting into that type of stuff!

the "malware" when you install the application from the cd is not virus. Its just applications that are used to unlock the locked version of the application Torque. Once you install the app, you can remove the key-gen and other file and run a quick windows scan or antivirus scan. Thanks for the video though.

I am in school becoming a mechanic and i work at a shop and know many great mechanics in the trade. When we scan a car the scanners we use can display much more than that little device. Sure i own and sometimes use a handheld OBD scanner (over 100$ not 10$) and it gives you a quick diagnosis but a proper scanner can look up many mroe error codes. For example that will not read an ABS or Airbag code, not many do that are sold. Ones that do are very pricey and deff not off your phone so if we say there is a code and you come and say that we are scamming you just think if its so easy to diagnose a car and know the problems with a little Bluetooth app why spend thousands on scan tools. We have a bad rep of ripping people off but in all honesty in all my time in the trade its been very few and far scams ive seen so watch how you point the finger

The elm 327 scanner will absolutely work on 1996 and new cars!! ESPECIALLY GM! Go into the settings of the torque app and you will se a option that says tick this if having trouble communicating! Also when you turn on blue tooth on phone make sure you click on make phone visible to all devices. And finally plug in OBD11 device turn ignition to the run position but do not start then scan for devices. It always comes down to operator error. And the pin code is printed on the scan device. Which I have only seen 1234 on the ELM DEVICES. Oh and also in torque settings make sure it is set for blush Tooth communication not WIFI. And yes it will work on the mustang.

In the main menu, how do you change the gauge? Its current accel but I want revs. How do you change this?

The BLUE ELM327 adapter in your video is the same imported Asian one I purchased from Hong Kong. It would ONLY connect to 1 of 6 vehicles, which was a 2002 Kia Sportage. I took the adapter apart, and it is missing the J1850 bus pins. This means that there is a huge gap in compatibility with American vehicles because J1850 is vastly used in many, many American vehicles. I don't think this was intentional but rather a mass produced product that made its way out to America.

hi, as with other elm327s it wont seem to work, i ve followed your instructions to the last letter, in torque it pairs and flashes away but wont connect to the ecu.the blue car on symbol just keeps flashing. what is wrong?? i have a ford focus estate 2003. please can you help.

why does my Torque pro not show any fuel related things? i mean it shows them but it cant be calculated like how much fuel there is left and such, all other stuff works tho how come?

u ever heared of the blue elm 327..causing the ABS and Airbag light to go on?.. if i plug it, turn the key..my lights go on.. if i turn key..and plug the OBD no lights go on...? why's that?

you cant use accelerometer for speed. Either gps or OBD also gives speed data

I have the same interface. My phone can see the unit, but when I go into Torque, the little car icon keeps flashing, never locks. Using it in my 04 Corolla. Any advise would be grateful. (I have tried it in my 15 Camry and 02 Vette, with this same issue, falshing car icon). Regards

Hey buddy nice vid. It looks like your IAT sensor is inaccurate aswell. It should be close to, but slightly higher than outdoor ambient air temperature. Not near 160 degrees as yours is showing. If this doesnt change to near ambient while driving it needs replaced.

I use a physically larger bluetooth adapter (the one with LEDs) so I could add a power switch - the adapter is powered even if the ignition switch is off, so anyone leaving the adapter plugged in full time might want to check its power consumption.

What is the difference between something like this that connects to a phone and one of those pricey tablet diagnostic tools? Like say the Launch X-431 Pro? Do they both do the same job? Or one does it better with more features? If so what are they?

It transfer data that is read by the cars ecu, via blue tooth into the phone. It is just as good or better than a professional scanner.

No, you don't have to, but you'll need to turn the key to the on position before it will transmit the onboard computer info.

Hi. My car dosen't have a trip computer so I cannot get real time information about consumption and so on. Can I leave this OBD adapter plugged in all the time, so I can have information on my smartphone while I am driving? Is it possible?

am planning on buying a used car, I cannot read the odometer because the LCD screen showing it is broken. Is there a way I can know the odometer reading using this App?

there isn't a way to make this compatible with your factory speakers is there? I'm replacing my factory radio with a nexus 7 and plan on using this with it in my RX8, worst case scenario i'm just going to re-wire my factory speakers to a low poer amp and run an AUX Y cable to the nexus for audio, but it would be nice to do it through bluetooth instead *Nexus 7 is running the SlimKat AutoDroid rom btw

Jeeps do not have any access by the customers, but you can do the engine by putting in the engine manufacturer as chyrsler, dodge or fiat.

Need a little help here.At 7:54 you say that the app uses phone's GPS and accelerometer to get relevant data.Can accelerometer data from smartphone be considered reliable because it's not fixed to the car's frame and might itself move around during acceleration/deceleration.

Was working good but the torque has stopped working. It just says adapter not found. Other app obd car doctor just working fine. Torque application has suddenly stopped working so adapter is fine.

Just bought one of these units. Should be in within the next few days. Realize now that the one I bought does not say ELM on it but looks exactly the same. And now I'm seeing some negative reviews and I'm a little concerned. In your experience with this product, can it damage my 2012 Chevy sonics ECU in any way.

Just bought one of these and I think it's defective! My phone can't find it when I do a bluetooth scan, I saw multiple lights on the device when I first plugged it into the 2004 Mazda 6, solid red light is on after that. Any thoughts?

The key needs to be in the on position to read error codes and fluid levels. The engine needs to be running to get real time information such as RPM, throttle position, intake temperature, engine temperature, coolant temperature, air/fuel mixture, fuel flow rate, intake manifold pressure, ignition timing, etc. Yeah, cars are complex.

Just so you know just because your car doesn't have any check engine codes doesn't mean it doesn't have any problems. There are many things on a car not controlled or monitored by the computer. Also sensors can fail and not throw any codes. And last but not least these app is pretty handy but trust me it's nothing compared to what a pro mechanic has at his shop. They have scan tools worth thousands of dollars that give them way more information an data that any app out there.

@ 11:40, I could just see someone pulling up 12-15 DTC'S, walking up to a "mechanic" and asking them how much to fix them, you'd only be RIPPING YOURSELF OFF, as you'd need to be able to interpret the relationship between the different codes, (one actual,physical, fault, can, and do, trip many others, within that particular system). In essence, there may be 1-3 "hard" codes tripping all the others. There is no substitute, for a well cultivated relationship with an honest, up to date TECHNICIAN.

What is the difference between "recommend" , "highly recommend" and "highly highly recommend"?

Mine pairs with my phone, but doesn't connect with the car. Just the red light shows up on the device. Meanwhile, on my phone it says "checking protocols", then "checking proto: automatic" and then times out after a minute. The car is 01 pontiac grand prix. My phone is samsung note 2 running droid v4.4.2 kitkat, with the free version of the torque app

I had the longer version one for my mazda 3 and my mom's mazda 6, both work wonderfully. But now i'm about to get a VW passat, have you tried it on other brand vehicles? I have heard VAG has some brand specific code that Torque is still working on... not showing them at all? or just can't show proper definition?

Just a heads up technically a fault code can show up however that may not be your cars problem because you cars PCM basically the cars computer may be compensating for another issue causing an abnormal symptom such as the fault code. This is a common occurrence so just beware before you think your mechanic is trying to hip you.L Later

I see lots of "does not work" comments about this and I have to join the crowd. I have this exact same adapter but I can't get it to connect to ECU, I have tried with 2 cars so far. 2002 Civic and 2003 or something Golf. When I put the adapter into the obd2 port I can see 3 lights flashing and then red light stays on. I have tried every obd2 software I could find but same problem with every one of them. My phone is paired with the adapter OK but it just can't connect to ECU (ignition on or car running, no difference), like it's not even there. I understand that every car in europe should be obd2 compatible from 2001 up, so I don't know what's the problem other than these cheap mini-adapters aren't that reliable.
