Thanks for this. My Father and Grandfather used to use a splitting gun when they were timber getting. The gun was about 14 inches long and two inches wide, and you'd drive it into the log with a ten pound hammer. Biggest log I saw them split was over three foot diameter and twelve ft long Mountain Ash. They had already driven some wedges to set the split points. I don't remember how much black powder they used, but it was a LOT. One of my first memories of my Grandfather was visiting him in hospital after he'd blown himself up. Wasn't the last time. Tough bugger.

Dad had 2 of these in the 50's. They were shaped different, had an actual wedge on bottom part top was flat. They used blasting powder also. Had a guy come over once and wanted to watch the action. We drove both chisels into a 4' long hedge log at 90 degrees to each other. Dad told the guy to run around to the other side of the chicken house when we lit them. He was more curious about the chisels going off. So he stood and watched until dad hollered at him to run. He barely made it around the corner of the chicken house when a piece come over the roof and landed by us ☺️

Huh, interesting to finally see this online. We had 3 when I was growing up. Keep in mind this is when you could buy Dupont Spinners at the feed store. Ours were shaped different, but were the same in concept. We actually used them to blow stumps. MY job was to watch the splitting wedge and find it after it blew. We also had a T-Handle type of an auger that was maybe five or six feet long. You would bore under the stump and load it it with 1" short sticks. I still have the auger. Good video, thank you

The way I see it is that the ability to be violent if needed, to have some martial skill or readyness is just a part of being a free human; and to deny that aspect seems to deny human nature, and to hand over a monopoly of violence to "the authorities" which are themselves clever apes no better than you or I really, and whose systems are often as just as unjust.

My oldest brother had one of these when I was a kid. In South-Western New York they called them "Splitting Guns". His was about the same length and diameter, but was more cone shaped on the end and was pounded into the log with a sledge hammer. His gun used paper "squibs" that were about 8 inches long and filled with slow burning powder. Favorite use was to blow apart crotch pieces when selling firewood. He would usually stand the length of crotch on top of the splitting gun, or back the gun up with a section of log to keep it from flying around.

An auger bit on a modern portable drill can have the right sized hole drilled before you can drive a wedge in. (3/4 inch bit 12 inches depth) Tip only an eggcup of black powder in, cut fuse to reach out the hole..and tamp in brick dust or similar filling the hole right up to the exterior of the log. Light fuse and WALK away. The tamping material concentrates the shockwave of the black powder down across the grain...then along the weaker grain lengthways along the log. 20ft long hardwood 5 ft across can be split into 3 chunks easily with one eggcup of real black powder.......

Obviously these boys have done this before, so who am I to say anything. I have had a couple homemade cannons before however. All I would have to suggest to a new comer to things of this nature is give it time in between set off's. Like enough time fer the metal to cool down. My good buddies got a little to excited one time and a projectile went off as someone was putting it in the tube. Blew his eardrum to peices, had black powder burns on his face, and the projectile went through his hand. So have fun, but please use your head. Looks like fun! 3:20 Nice to see the old timer packin' as well. Enjoy that freedom, we don't have it up here in Canada. 2:43 My one objection is that it makes me nervous to see him pouring directly from the bottle into the powder wedge. If there were any remaining embers in there that touched off the descending powder, it'd trail right up to the bottle and then it's almost as though he's holding a grenade. That's why you shouldn't load muzzle-loaders directly from a bottle. Safer to use a smaller container to transfer from the bottle into the wedge or muzzle loader. Granted, maybe sufficient time had passed to where it was no longer a legitimate worry (I don't know how much time passed between edits), but that's something that came to mind. Still looked like a fun day out!

Using powder probably isn’t that expensive if you’re removing a stump compared to stump disolving powder I’ve seen or renting a stump grinder. Powder probably should be cheaper if it wasn’t for the government. It’s just like liquor. I lived in the Philippines and it’s shocking oh differently things are priced. Having a baby is like $300 in the Philippines for hospital bills. Life is way more affordable outside of the US.

@@koltoncrane3099 I don't doubt that, but the video title refers to "wood splitting" not stump removal, nor is there any stump removal portrayed in the video.

I have one of these but more of a cone on the end , about the same diameter stock and length but a deeper bore We used to split four foot lengths or twisted Elm all day long, (before Dutch Elm disease took them all) mine probably holds at least twice the amount of black powder. We used to pre drive it into the log wiggle it back out then fill it with powder and a bit of paper wad and tap it back in, lay a large back up log against the blasting wedge to keep it from fly off to far. ah yes good times indeed
