a lot of people don't take time to level there stones.i take a mirror square around the size of a window pane or a window pane with sand paper , rubbing it across till stone perfectly flat. getting a dip in middle of stone you can't see doesn't take much sanding got be a fresh surface that's level, I've never worn a stone out doing this.i have stones some over 20 years and not wore them out.thats how I do it.i enjoyed your video and now I new subscriber.nanna and papa wishing you well
I will try that use an old belt on the belt sander or just two stones together. Thank for the sub. I am not posting much at the moment as I need cataracts operation. Being able to see helps with carving.. All the best Dave
LIKED/SUBBED You actually used the damned thing. And, you obviously have the experience to back up your opinion. I was about to buy the more expensive Flexcut but you changed my mind. This Old Timer is the better deal ($14.38 on Amazon). The Flexcut Whittling Jack ($45.58) has no advantages over this knife and a lot of reviewers complaining about it.
Hi Bob thanks. I have not used the flexcut knife I know when I got this the flexcut was around 100 bucks. You will have to sharpen the blades on the 240T a little. But if your into carving you can sharpen yeah. The flexcut might be a better knife I understand it comes with a block to sharpen the inside of the V tool and gouges. As I said I dont own one or used one. The oldtimer has worked well for me its not the knife I use all the time its more of a have in the pocket when out camping in the woods knife. I do use the gouges on it often though if you saw my first impressions video on it You get a lot of control on the gouges that are at a right angle. All the best Dave
Nice spoon reminded me of a man who lives not so far away over the border in Maine. The story goes that he is actually from a very wealthy family but he won't accept any of their money . He lives in a small cottage no electricity or running water I see him on the road often on his bicycle with a small sigh on back that read, "Live simply that others may simply live." He makes spoons and sells them and that is his only income. A few years back a car hit him when he was on his bicycle and he was in hospital for months for a while they didn't think he would live but he is back home and on his bicycle once again.
What angle is your bevel at now? I managed to get one of these for Christmas this year. The initial sharpness was ok but the bevel still had fairly deep grind marks. It took a bit of work to polish them out. I wish I would have just change the bevel angle first and saved myself a ton of time. I put it at about 15 degrees. Even at that angle it doesn’t look like yours. Thank you for the video :)
Hi. I took it up to almost the nail hole almost half way up the blade. I like a flat ground blade. This is not flat but it far better and you get a nice bite. If you a getting a good deep bite now stick with with what you have done but you could just knock the back edge off the bevel back so its not as steep wedge thats basically what I did. I found with the original grind it stopped at that bevel. Yeah they take a bit of work to polish up but at the price I think its a good little knife. Happy Carving.
Hi Dave....have you passed your feedback to the manufacturers?. I got some polish compound sticks from one of the polishers at work 😉 Lovely job with the spoon 👍👍👍👍
Hi mate. No not as yet. But I will email them. with my thoughts and a link to the video. Just remember to polish both sides and alternate side to take off the bur. Cheer mate. Dave
That spoon was so pretty...did you ever carve one of your character people faces into the bowl of the spoon? Do you sell your character people or do you carve "just for fun:? The people you carve have such character in their faces...it is such intricate carving...what a talent you have!!!! Your friend from the US....regards to your family...Judie
Thank you. No this was the fist time I did a spoon. I do it for fun I started one time when I broke a rib. Restless hands I guess lol. All the best Dave
Love the spoon, did i hear you right? you said that was your first ever spoon?, great job. Good review, with a nice tutorial on sharpening, I sharpen my edge tools in a very similar fashion. One of my stones was originally used with oil, I now use it with water, and it works really well. Occassionly WHEN we have a good summer, and high temperatures, it will sweat oil, which comes out of the pores in the stone, and sit on top in little beads, then of course i don’t need the water. Just ordered myself an Old Timer 24OT. Looking forward to a bit of whittling and carving, with it. Cheers.
Thanks. Yup first spoon ;-) but I had been carving for a couple of years by then so not a hard one to do. You will have to sharpen it when you get it just need finishing really. Water is not as dirty thats for sure. I keep thinking of getting some diamond stones might have to write a letter to santa lol. Thanks for the comment and have fun with the knife. All the best Dave
@@SouthpawDavey rough rider schrade and buck all great American knives but China now make them I own all these knives but issues I have was was with knife you sharpened I own about 2 them jack carving knives love em I do own a flex cut whittling jack I don’t like price so schrade is winner just bit of graft gets ya great tool or tools let’s face it it’s a workshop in ya pocket lol. Greetings from Essex 👍🦊🐾🇮🇹
@@johndagostino2451 Thanks I didnt like the factory bevel found it limited the cut depth. Not a big deal to fix or alter to my liking. Like you said a little work sharpening and its a work shop in the pocket. Cheers Dave
@@SouthpawDavey np it seems great minds think alike I make all my tools from scratch including a spoon hook knife using old 1930s Sheffield steel eating knife just bend it over fit handle sharpen it jobs a goodun I made my own strops hell I teach carving too made my own Irish fighting sticks known as shillelagh greetings from Essex 👍🦊🐾🇮🇹
@@johndagostino2451 I just made a hook knife last week from an old hand saw. I am in Switzerland so dont find much from Sheffield here. Well Apart from me lol. Yes i am made in Sheffield. My mother worked in the cutlery industry mostly as a buffer so its in my blood. Nothing finer than working with tools you have made yourself. Cheers
Hello Kimberly. Clean the paint of the back with some 600 then 1000 grit wet paper.Or stone do the same with the bevel and strop it. keep on the bevel this knife is good but it needs to be sharpened. Get all the scores off the bevel side. Hard to explain. Search sharpening gouges its the same thing. Dont go down the rabbit hole of you need all this fancy stuff though it can be done with wet sand paper and a strop to get it as good as you need. Hope this helps. All the best Dave
Sorry for the late reply we were dealing with a death in the family. I think this knife only comes right handed. I am also left handed and find it ok to use a left would be better.
Southpaw Davey urban farm. Lol, Actually, I'm amazed at you guys that can do that carving. I have no talent at all, nor can I figure out how you accomplish it :)
Cheers Trev see the instruments to my side and some on the wall I use the nails to pick the music. Was so nice of you to comment fuck you very much. Dave
This is the only knife of theirs I own so I can not comment on that. The steel is good. Its not that sharp sharp out of the box but the price was right. Is it as good as the flex cut? no. Is it worth what I paid for it? Yes. Thanks for looking and your comment. Dave
I have both knives the flexcut is a better quality and like you say the Sharade is more affordable. I have several Sharade's that are U.S. made and there steel is far better than their Tiwan made counter parts. I have had the Sharade try to close up on me, but luckily I didn't get cut. The Flexcut blades lock in place. I have many carving tools since I have been carving since I was 14 years old, I'm 67 years young now. I worked for 5 years as a Carver at Silver Dollar city. Wood carving is a great pass time. It's good to see people keeping it going. But for tools you get what you pay for.
@@robertcutburth3745 You are right. As I said I can not comment on the old steel to the new overseas steel. For me its a pack knife or in the garden. It would be better with a lock on it and I didn't like the grind on the carving knife I re ground that. But for the price it good. The flex cut is a nice knife but for the price I could get a set of nice Swiss made knifes gouges and a tool roll for my pack. Bulkier but better again. I got more into carving a few years ago after an operation it is a great pass time. All the best Sir Dave
Carving is a great stress releaver. I'm retired now but still carve a lot. When my dog and I go to the woods I always take a carving knife and set and make something. All the best to ya, keep carving it's an enjoyable past time.
Be very careful in using it, the blades do not lock. Poor quality Steel very difficult to sharpen. It may be worth 20.00 bucks, but not in my opinion. The concept of knife is great, but the product is nothing to write home about.
i had no problem with the steel sharpening or keeping it sharp. Yeah a lock would be better but if your not cutting with the back of the blade it wont fold up on you. Swiss army knife they dont lock best selling knife in the world. The flex cut is way better than 24OT but 5 times the cost not 5 times better though.
