I got mine yesterday and i love it! The fit & finish are an easy "A" while the walk & talk are an "A+"! The only downside is the spey blade pivot is full of grit (still flushing it out) and the edge on the clip point couldn't cut melted butter. It's on the verge of shaving sharp now, which is my happy place for a utility blade. The spey and sheep's foot blades came shaving sharp and only needed a few passes on my hone steel. All in all, its a huge win on a beautiful knife! 💖💖💖
I absolutely love this knife, I have two of the bone handled ones and one with the delrin that I'm carrying right now. On both of the bone handled ones the shield fell out, I cleaned the back of the shields and the inside of the cut out and gorilla glued them back in and have had no other problems. Fantastic knives!
I like these large stockmans in the 9cr and bone. When I was cleaning the first one I got, the dye washed off one of the bone covers. I contacted Schrade warranty and they asked for pictures. Once they saw what happened, they sent me a new knife. Their service was fast and easy. And now I have a goofy looking toolbox knife! Except for the dye and the need for a better edge, these are great, big knives. Nice review!
My parents gave this to me for Valentine's day. So far, it is a great knife and in my opinion, the quintessential "old man's" knife. Also, thank you for continuing to share your collection with us. I hope you feel better soon. We will pray for your recovery.
I just ordered this model, I have most in this series now, need the 8otb next to complete. The steel has performed very well for me, the steel seems HT well.9cr used is like 440c. Thank you for the closeup review my friend. The 94otb is my favorite and ordered a second, mostly due to the first needed help, should have sent back but fixed it myself. The blade stop on tang was ground a couple hundredths to much, so blade had a tick of play when locked open as there was a gap between blade tang and spring. Used jb weld, mixed, let sit till it started to cure, oiled spring, wiped bladetang down with denatured alcohol, placed a small drop on tang, waited till stickiness was hurt about gone, opened blade slowly (so i did not squish to much out) to "squish" jb weld flat, closed till jb cured enough to stop sticking, then opened and left it. After my mixed jb was hard as a rock. Perfect solid lock up now and have been using it with no issue so far with jb weld loosening, open and close as usual. I'm a premium modern folder guy up to last couple years. Starting buying case, but has been hit and miss with quality, but I like them much. Tried some "cheap" traditional knives like schrade, RR, Roper. I really like the carbon RR, though the 440a is perfectly fine, just strop or hone quickly at end of day. Love this Schrade series, Roper.....not impressed with my Roper pit viper in multiple ways. NO they are not perfect, but for the price they are excellent imo. Check out the new RR apta with vg10 and blue micarta (though looks like black micarta) takes a wicked edge as my other vg10 blades, solid build, nice fit and finish, great action with a good strong pull but not to strong (7+), nice heft in hand, have another on the way. Oh, and they leave a good amount of steel behind edge on this series which I like. So keep that in mind if any are wanting a super thin slicey blade, look elsewhere. But I can tell you after a reprofile and polished to a mirror finish, these will get wicked sharp and hold it well (like 440c does) but don't expect s30v, xhp and like endurance, but beats the 7cr, 440a and like steels considerably. These larger slipjoints I carry in a sheath on my belt so weight is no issue.
Thanks for the great comments. I'll be having a look at the APTA Micarta version real soon. Old Timers represent great value. They are typically built very rugged and for those that consistently maintain the blade, they will be rewarded with great longevity and a faithful edge.
That is a nice Stockman. One of my favorite patterns. I was looking at this one, I like the sawcut Bone. So thanks for showing this, it looks like a win.👍
Very nice one with real sawcut bone! I wouldn't mind the size for an edc, i'm not going to tun around in shorts anymore haha. Very well done, great size and nice materials. Thank you for the review TK.
This is Knife that is designed for work. I have an OT Lumberjack in my EDC rotation. When it is not tucked away in my back pocket, it is on the top of the dresser in our bedroom. It’s not really a knife to carry when wearing your Sunday go to church clothing ( a smaller stockman is best there), nut it works fine with jeans, work pants, or even casual shorts. This large stockman can hold its own against a large stockman from any other brand. God bless and enjoy everyday. - Tennessee Smoky
At 3.08 moment I can notice that the thickness of the clip blade is the same of the tang. In my one not, it is deeply thinned, probably to avoid a rubbing issue. But when I look at the closed blades, there is something like a "void". Too much tapering in my one (it was sold in a plastic clam not in the box). The standard 858 made by Taylor I own has full thickness.
I have the 8OT stockman, made in New York with carbon steel. I found it at a stock sale new, in a blister pack that had done turned yellow it was so old. I think I paid four or five times the price than it was originally intended to be sold for in 1989 when it was made. I wish the Chinese made Old Timers and Uncle Henrys were available in 1070 or 1090 series carbon steel. Better still, return production of all these knives back to the United States. At least the new Generations series is US made.
Looks like a strong no nonsense highly appealing. Upgrade Bone and upgrade steel. Another winner. Next lets see a Large and a small Land Shark Heritage in Wood.... Just kidding.....? Super review. Thanks.
If A company brought this back to the USA and could keep the quality and used carbon steel. With a few different bone handle materials they would kill case knives. They r great value now and they r made in China
