@@the-quintessenz No it didn't, do your research. Was redesigned as W463 in 1990 just like the J80 Land Cruiser, which is why Top Gear reviewed both in 1991 alongside the aging Range Rover. The original Geländewagen was designated as W460 in 1979 and was discontinued in 1991, replaced by W461. As an owner of them, gets very tiring how the average joe misses that and just comments anyhow without proper context.
Skyemaster Well, it wasn't redesigned until 3 years ago and only had facelifts for 28 years, so of course it looked the same. 2019+ model is different, but of course most of you that don't buy them won't know that. Certainly isn't "exactly the same". ☻
@@jmin8400 Just look at the sat-nav and cupholders in the 2018 model. It's hilarious that any idiot would want that car with the shit basic design of a 1970's car.
Interestingly, despite the fact that Jeremy Clarkson prefers the Range Rover in this review, you can find out that he owned a Land Cruiser at that period if you watch "family car of the year 2000".
Rusty Climber I’ve had RR’s and I agree about parts being expensive. That’s here in the UK. Reports show that over 60% of LR products are faulty which is horrendous. The thing is, If you get a good Range Rover, it’s brilliant and the best car you’ll ever drive as an all rounder, however the odds are stacked against the consumer. I’ve driven and owned a variety of cars from all over and still think when you get a decent RR that works, it’s the best.
@@dieselpower5303 I did an MOT check on all three and none have any record of an MOT. The merc hasn't been taxed since 1993 and the land cruiser since 1995. According to to the DVLA anyways
@@jayballuk they are journalist veichles, none of them will sell to people or stuff, they get back to the factory, fixed and get into the musem zone of every company!
Plenty of those Land cruisers are still running around here in Kenya infact some still look new with aftermarket lamps & new paint. The Range Rovers left are mostly enthusiasts' cars, loads of them are grounded with transmission, suspension issues. G-wagen didnt sell much here.
what...? I am wondering where the range rovers go now, I do not see any. But I am still driving my 1989 G wagon diesel today, nothing change, just wonderful and powerful as it was in 1989.
India India you will love it I had one as my third car. But be warned. It's expensive to fix. Be ready to walk away and buy another if something goes wrong. Better than fixing.
I sold my 1994 Landcruiser Turbo Diesel in Australia a few years ago. No smoke, no burning oil or water. Original everything at 545,000kms and it had travelled throughout Australia towing much of its life.
A couple of years ago I bought a 1989 Range Rover and in that time I've become rather alarmed as it's been damn near faultless! I fear I may have to take it back to Lode Lane and get their engineers to check it over and reinstall some of that good old fashioned Land Rover unreliability. It is still an amazing car, today I trailered home an 8x6 shed, last month I was towing a ton bag of concrete and a mixer, it's my daily driver (apart from my Triumph Speed Triple but that would struggle to tow a ton) and I can truly say it is an amazing tool to own. It's one of those things than seems impractical but then you find out just how capable it is and use it far more than you think you would. The only downside is that it's a martyr to the drink but at least I get to enjoy that V8 noise through the sports pipe!
You can perfectly buy and register those cars in EU, however it would turn out to be a very costly endeavour as they sort of want to punish you for getting one. The regulations go as far as restricting acces to some city-centres in Western Europe(though the number of areas you're not allowed to drive them will most certainly go up).
You talk rubbish-the Uk is the most car snobbish country in the world ..and we don't even own a car brand any more....Mercedes=people who think there driving the best...like they used to be...now overpriced rubbish..your another one to fall for it.lol
I think you're forgetting the Land Cruiser 70, it's been around since 1984... Also the Land Cruiser 40 was made between 1959-2001 so Toyota does make designs last a long time!
the real beauty of it all is that opinions in reviews don't have to match the numbers, and the fact that his opinion is still valued speaks volumes...not every reviewer (cars, games, movies...) has to agree, because you don't formulate an opinion based on only one of them...in fact, I'll go as far as to say that to evaluate a product you NEED both people who are biased and unbiased. It's only good to have at least two different views on the same thing to average it out
german made B.S car. It will brake down every weekend. I used to owne one. NEVER AGAIN will I buy a German made vehicle. There is thousands better way of spending your weekends than repairing your German made car. thank you. but no .....thank. u
+Joseph Long as for someone as an American flag as their profile picture, no doubt your a typical American yobbo who drives a big ass truck that falls apart as you drive it. All the jeeps are crap, in build quality and appeal. You Americans just like your own vehicles, and don't know otherwise. All the Cherokee and grand Cherokee's competition (bmw, Mercedes, Land Rover /Range Rover, Audi, Toyota etc etc) out perform the jeeps in every way
TCKZ Crew lol a stock Cherokee with bald tires would rape a customized Land Rover, Audi, BMW, and Toyota offroad. Who gives a flying dickhole that the interiors have better quality than the cherokee, it's fucking off-road, no one gives a shit about better plastics or leather, and if you even wanted better quality and leather, go by a Cherokee limited rather than a sport or classic models. That and the 4.0 engine and vehicle will outlast your typical Range Rover. It's just a legendary off road vehicle and there is a reason why we the people customize them.
Why do people think reliability=engine? Loads of other things will apart on the range rover that will leave you stranded, the whole thing is just crap, they are all rusted now to the last nut and bolt, 80 series are still on the road and cost 10k
The least capable car off road in this video is the Range Rover, both of the others offer front and rear diff locks as standard and are equal in terms of suspension. You have to love the bias from Mr C.
Nope nothing beats a RR for articulation and they have dual limited slip diffs they don't need diff lock. Only the old one have diff lock before the LSDs were added. The boge rear end is why they are so good off road. Google it. They have 3 suspension points on the rear axel.
All were capable of getting through that muddy trail in the woods though, which is far more off-road than 99.8% of SUV owners will ever take their vehicles. You couldn't have done that trail with a modern RAV4.
Well Toyota made them much nicer after this episode, by adding leather trim and the better engine in late 1992, better leather and dual airbags from 1995. Of course he jumped on it. Land Cruiser jumped up in both price and prestige starkly during the 90s, squandering it away in the later 2000s and 2010s. J200 was not as competitive in terms of luxury as the 80 and 100 were, in a smaller field of competition. By 1998, these nameplates were still the best to get in 4x4 luxury.
Let me put it this way. That land cruiser are still around and about in high numbers everywhere in the world. For daily driving, or for offroading. Those versions of g wagon and range rovers i hardly hardyly ever see on the road. Especially the range rovers, practically none.
The Range Rover is the obvious loser here: reliability issues, no lockers, less strong drive train, old fashioned engine, ... The Mercedes looks stylish and is very capable off road but it's too expensive. With the Toyota you clearly get the most value for your money + it will be around long after the G wagon and the Range Rover have rusted away. Cheers
Which is why the Range Rover was back then and still is now a world leader and has always been classed as the pinnacle of luxury four wheel drives. Not to mention the so called old engine is lighter than most 4 cylinder engines and produces over 150 horsepower. The smoothness and quietness of the v8 also helps with the luxury aspect.
MrSpookylukey my cherokee makes over 150 horsepower, it has leather seats and warmers and all of that nice stuff the range rover has, but 3 things it has more than the range rover. 1: no reliability issues. 2: It doesn't get stuck when I offroad it. 3: It still costs less. This isn't hate to your comment either. It's a counter argument. 🙂
MrSpookylukey Range Rover is not the best ...people who's retarded makes them seem like it's the best ...do get the picture here. People who has money buy it and trash it . It's not for normal how blow that can't afford window regulator every other month. I notice that stupid people will always make a opinion a fact even when they can't back it up ...tell me why is a range rover the best ? If it's the best at breaking down then you're right. You couldn't find a 5 years old range rover with everything still functioning....if it's the best i would own one but I'm too smart and don't have time to fix my cars everyday ...
In Brazil, Toyota does not sell the Land Cruiser. But the G-Class is marketed by Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover sells all its models here. But the G-Class is undoubtedly the best-selling.
Of course new Gelandewagens are overpriced, but the old ones lasts forever. There's one old man called Gunther Holtorf. He spent 800k miles simply driving in his G-Wagen mostly offroad and just a couple of things broke down on that G, which could be easily fixed.G-Wagen is worth every dollar.
In my childhood growing up Calcutta in the 80s used to see a lot of G Wagons used by the expatriate German community and the local Consulate....since then G Wagon has gone upmarket...
+jacob harford I have a 2001 Cherokee and it is so much fun to drive and the engine makes all of that torque in the bottom end. Since it makes all of it's power on the bottom end, regular driving is always around a VERY LOW 1500 rpms a decent speed. It hits the rev limiter at 6000 rpms and it sounds like a BMW inline 6 on steroids. 😆 It's just cool to think that you can hit the maximum torque on the 4.0 without even trying.
+Joseph Long I completely understand what you mean. I feel exactly the same with my 2000 Cherokee classic, it just finds everything so easy, towing, overtaking, climbing or going up hills. Glad to hear you have on too
South African-born explorer Mike Horn ran a leg of his 'Pole2Pole' expedition from Birdsville through the Simpson Desert in a convoy of G-Wagens, 6 of the 7 vehicles that attempted the Canning broke down and they actually had charter a plane to fly parts in lol Canning van be done in a '83 landcruiser with no issues - not a huge achievemt compared to the bloke in the Lada Niva that got through without an issue plenty old landcruisers and patrols do this trip without issue never seen a rover out there
Its a shame British Leyland couldn't get their shit together and provide reliable cars. They had a bunch of interesting and very ahead of their time cars like the Range Rover. I mean that car came out in 1970, it was 20 years ahead of its time in terms of refinement. Keep in mind in 1970, 4wd SUV's were the tiny Ford Bronco, Jeep CJ-5, the Chevy K-5 Blazer, hell maybe the Jeep Wagoneer gave the Range Rover a run for its money in terms of similar space and refinement. But the Wagoneer was in a class of 1 in the American market, the Range Rover was kind of in a class of 1 in the world market until it was sold in the US in the 1980's, when it clobbered the Wagoneer in terms of refinement and being just modern.
Great observation, in a sea of mindless commentary. Back in the 80s, it was just Range Rover, Grand Wagoneer, and then 60-Series Land Cruiser for premium utilities. MB formally joined the higher end fray with the W463 lux variants in 1990 and LC 60-Series gave way to the J80/Lexus LX (post '95). Jeep handicapped itself with ZJ Grand Wagoneer (GC variant) not going far enough in execution and in being too mass market (less prestige). P38A brought RR into the contemporary world with better ergonomics, but was not very distinctive and had a much shorter shelf life, plus the reliability quotient likely worsened.
2:50 - Why wasn’t it possible to fit the right-hand-drive diesel versions of the G Wagon with a turbocharger at the time this was first broadcast in 1991?
I remember seeing a lot of those Land Cruiser 100 in Amazon back in the day. Mostly gassers and probably these were all assembled in Cumaná, Venezuela.
My humble preference goes to the Range Rover, plain and simple, just because it 's so stunningly beautifull. I am very sorry to see Jeremy driving it like a teenager in a very pedantic way. That is with loads of throttle, where a gentle passage would be so much more 'English'. :-)
you are absolutely right!! toyota changed the way the world looked at 4x4's. Their reliability was so good that every serious company and organization in the world stop buying land rovers and bought land cruisers.
Just bought a '91 with 229k miles. Has oil seepage everywhere from years of neglect and needs driveline rebuilt but the bastards' still running every time I crank it up and take the family for a ride around town.
Good on ya Clarkson but we all know which 4wd out of that trio is still a daily driver, towing heavy boats and going off road and it ain’t the Range Rover or G wagen!
ya i remember when ppl were dumping land rover and range rovers to entertain land cruisers and gwagon in africa . toyota took over pretty fast on african roads even the government cars were dropped from range to cruisers.but today, gwagen, cruiser and rovers are cousins in africa now but toyota is still leading in sales
anyone notice that it takes a little bit longer for the Range Rover to start each time, and it also pisses out white smoke from the exhaust where the other two don't? Having said that I would probably take the Range Rover over the Toyota Yawn-Box and the Mercedes Look-at-me Trophy.
How silly of Clakson to define the looks of a G-Wagen of "hideous" and "tractor looking". 20 years after the G remains unchanged and everyone with cash and taste is queueing to own one. Well done Jeremy!
Which was the EP that had 3 4x4 tested by toffs and they all got stuck and had to be pulled out by a digger. And they had an old land rover series 1 I think that was the only one to make it up the hill.
i'm not saying that MB (G wagon) or Land Rover (Range Rover) don't know how to build a SUV to be reliable under extreme conditions, its that they know about 99% of the people who buy their SUVs will NEVER take it off road so they don't bother...
