Hi Nick, glad I watched this video, after only using my Kayak twice, I checked my prop, pin was frozen with rust already starting , sprayed it , now all is well 👍

I plan to purchase a Topwater PDL 120 within the next few days. If the Topwater/Predator drives are the same, I will definitely do as you demonstrated before it goes in the water. Thanks!!

Bill, they are the same. Doing it every month or two will stop you from having any issues.

I decided to order 2 Sportsman PDL 120s instead...so, I am waiting for Old Town to get the green light to ship. What are your thoughts about using a heavier lubricant? I've seen Frontier Silver 70 used on other pedal drives. It is designed for marine use. Thanks

I wouldn’t change anything about the current system. If something fails they will replace it.

Always use gloves! CPC's always contain carcinogens. (Aircraft mechanic 40 yewrs experience)

Great point! As a fellow aircraft mechanic (engine troop AC-130, Air Force) I’m sure we have both been around far worse. I’m also sure it’s been on my hands while eating lunch lol

Have you had any problems with the rudder not coming back up straight with the lever?

Rick, the rudder system isn't designed to return "home" by itself. I always keep my left hand on steering control when raising the rudder to ensure it lands in the bracket.

Do you have to lubricate any other parts of the internals? Gears etc?

The drive is designed to be maintenance free. I wouldn’t open it up unless you bought it used or Old Town told you too.

Do you know what kind of grease they use on the pinion and gear? It's green and translucent jelly looking stuff. Much lighter looking than the thick Marine wheel bearing grease I used for the trailer wheels.

@@NavarreKayakFishing Alright, Bel-Ray waterproof grease is what Old Town just told me it is. She said any marine grease should be fine though I have read mixing different greases that are incompatible can cause problems with separation and hardening that to the point it's like not having any grease in there. Someone in a forum said Bel-Ray is lithium soap based (not white lithium) as well as Lucas red n tacky and Yamaha. Probably just going to use the Lucas marine grease I have in the garage. On second thought, I went to the Bel ray site and it has a dealer locator. When i put in my zip code like 6 different shops came up with it so I'll probably go grab some...i dont want no problems.

Hey do u take the prop off every time you use in salt water or do you just spray with a hose after?

Most of the time I don’t even spray it down. I don’t take the propeller off for 3-4 months at a time.

Old town says to leave the kayak on saw horses upside down. Is that really necessary? Im keeping the 132 in a storage unit. On the floor on top of a moving blanket? Is that ok or should I put foam down? I dont want to mess it up

Andrew, I’m not sure if it will hold up well. The CRC becomes tacky and adds a protective coating that doesn’t come off.

You mentioned breaking an internal shear pin. I'm assuming I have done the same. How did you fix this? So fare Old Town has been useless for me to fix this problem.

Danny, have you called customer support? Did you buy the kayak new?

@@NavarreKayakFishing I called customer support. I bought the kayak second hand. I asked customer support where I could take the drive for repair or where I could ship it or where I can buy parts. 3 days of back and forth with them and still no usable info. It seems crazy to me that if you don't buy this new you cant get it repaired or buy parts. Its a 2018 model that was not abused. I was in open water never hit anything or clogged up the drive. It just started free spinning as if the shear pin on the prop broke. But the prop and shear pin are good.

It is pretty crappy that they wouldn’t send over the schematics. If you have a Facebook you can check out the Old Town Owners page. I believe I saw a guy who took his apart a while back and if the video existed someone on there would point you in the right direction.

Why doesn’t old town make the pin out of stainless steel?

The system needs a weak point. The shear pin is cheap and easy to replace. It fails first and the internals will be protected.

That makes sense, I wonder if brass would be a better option.

From oxidizes pretty quick and I believe it’s soft enough to bend. Ideally the shear pin would snap if it encounters to much torque.
